stuff you can't do on an iphone To showcase what you might be able to do with the new Motorola Z10 phone, agency Cake has produced a campaign that features a marriage proposal. A proposal shot and edited on the phone. Oh yeah - the agency says that she said yes. I would assume that she called him to say yes, using a Motorola Z10.

how not to do social media Please stop doing YouTube video contests, and pretending that it's a new, or exciting social media campaign. It's old, tired and lame, ok? The people in those anti-fashion gold jackets have launched a YouTube campaign to show your house, and promote their real estate company. Here's the clincher: You must list your house with them, must include your listing agent in the video, and must shoot the video while the sun is at 43 degrees from the horizon. Yikes. YouTube contests have become so ho hum that some bloggers even refuse to cover them any more. Amen. Please, please, please hire an agency that uses social media to create your social media campaign for you. Just sayin'. Labels: ads, social media, youtube

rick astley to play for the ny mets This is the very last day to rickroll (explained here) the NY Mets. The Gothamist reports that thousands of people have already written in the famous song on a promotion's entry form to vote for the 8th inning sing-a-long song. You should too. Voting ends at noon today, so hurry it up. Click here for pics of Mets players doing coke with strippers. Labels: sports marketing, viral, youtube

a good excuse to cover yourself in cheetos at the office today ![]() MakeTheLogoBigger Bill has discovered the Orange Underground. An excellent campaign for Cheetos. A really, really excellent campaign. Completely integrated. A Cheetos spot on television (some people still watch it), plus websites and YouTube. Social participation. Really nice job by Goodby Silverstein. This is how we do it, yo. Labels: ads, social media, youtube, yummyfood

eating lunch at your desk has never been more fun You can read blogs, Facebook and Twitter while on conference calls and pretending to pay attention to your boss. But how do you watch podcasts, funny videos, participate in Seesmic or watch other fun stuff that requires video? I've had this discussion with clients, too - who admit that watching YouTube videos during the day looks bad to coworkers and bosses. (Over here, we encourage it, of course. Especially podcasts like Morgan Webb, above.) The New York Times writes about what's evolved as a result of this phenomenon...lunch time is the new prime time. From Michael Coulter, via Facebook. everything about everything about inernet marketing ![]() Here's a massive list of the best internet marketing blog posts. How to do almost anything on almost any social tool. Lots of great reading if you're stuck at the office this week while everyone else is on vacation. They'll come back fatter, and you'll be smarter. (Always better.) The pic of David Hasselhoff might seem related, but this is a pic that I snapped right as he was jumping onto a social media bandwagon. So it's related, trust me. a love letter to the new 30 second spot Check out this beautiful piece for Converse. A love letter to basketball. Not knowing anything about team sports, I immediately thought it was a piece for Dwayne Wayne. But it turns out that Dwyane Wade is a different person entirely. But now I know better. And I love basketball just a little more, now. Thanks Converse. As Bill has accurately pointed out, 2:31 is the new 30 seconds. Awesome. Found on Beyond Madison Avenue. you are the future of media distribution. ![]() Duh. In case you didn't already know, consumer generated/distributed media is a really big deal. A new study from Nokia claims that by 2012, a quarter of all entertainment will be created, edited and shared within peer groups rather than coming out of traditional media groups. In an attempt to coin a new buzz word (cuz we need more of those,) Mark Selby, Vice President, Multimedia for Nokia says that a quarter of media will be ‘Circular’: "The trends we are seeing show us that people will have a genuine desire not only to create and share their own content, but also to remix it, mash it up and pass it on within their peer groups - a form of collaborative social media.” From Micro Persuasion. ride the trains or animals will turn on the sexfest Virgin Trains just launched a really smart - and hilarious campaign to promote their train service. The greener sort of travel. I was recently meeting with a client who remarked how Virgin is a mondo conglomerate of brands and companies, yet they've managed to stay...Virgin. And this is a great example. Check out the really funny YouTube video above, and a campaign hub/microsite too. Work is from Glue.

teachers lose all sense of humor. A super hilarious new ad for Carl's Jr. has some flat bunned teachers in a tizzy. Brad Haley, executive vice president of marketing for Carl's Jr., said the ad was designed for the target audience of “young, hungry guys between the ages of 18 and 34 ... it's meant to be funny, silly, interesting and not as a social statement.” Hooray Brad. Sounds like well targeted creative. Forget the old days of hot for teacher. Now it's "disrespectful and inappropriate." Labels: ads, youthmarketing, youtube, yummyfood

superbad promo is super kinda funny Now I want to go see this movie a little more. Here's a great example of how to use the YouTuberie for online promotion. An interview gone haywire with the actors from the new film Superbad. (May not be safe for your cubicle, if your boss is uptight about the F word. But funny enough to say F it, and play it anyway.) Side note: the interviewer in this clip is none other than Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright. (Eliza, go watch that movie now.) Labels: ads, film, youthmarketing, youtube

youtube gets better Love the YouTube. You know how it's annoying when you upload the video of yourself singing at the office xmas party, and the freeze frame that YouTube chooses has what looks like your head's about to explode? Now, you can choose your own images for the video thumbnails on YouTube videos. Awesome news for brands the world over. Rejoice in the Tube. nbc tries social media. then forgets to update. ![]() To promote the new NBC show Chuck, a new show about a computer geek (modeled after Geek Squad guys, I guess), they've created a dashboard to emulate Chuck's machine. There are some very good ideas implemented. They've integrated Chuck versions of today's more popular social media tools like delicious, Ning, Twitter and others. But they seem to have dropped it at that. Chuck's Twitter page seems to be dead, past his initial Twitter, as seen above. Same goes for many of the social sites setup in Chuck's name. Not sure if the agency is taking a break, if NBC's budget didn't carry this far, or they're just waiting for something...but that's a mistake. The lesson for businesses here is that if you're going to USE social media, use it. Don't create an empty Second Life presence, an empty Twitter page, or non-active social network page. It would be better not to embrace it at all. Chuck just lost an opportunity to build anticipation for his big debut. Later, Chuck. the map of social media ![]() Can't find your way around the social media landscape? How about a map? Someone's created a new world map, based on the population of the major social sites. While the maker clearly points out that this is "Not a complete survey. Sizes based on most complete information I could find," wouldn't it be amazing if we could get some programming genius to hook this up and make it real? So that land masses grow or shrink based on available stats? I believe the map has been around for a while, as I couldn't find Twitter or a couple of other newer places. Maybe this is a pre-revolution map. Labels: facebook, myspace, pop culture, social media, web2.0, youthmarketing, youtube

presidential ad is...art? Already dreading the onslaught of political ads for the next year and a half? Check out Presidential candidate Mike Gravel's new spot. Ummm....ok. Is it weird just to be weird? Is there a deeper message? Are there subliminal messages prompting me to buy Pepsi? Regardless, I guess I'd prefer this type of ad over what's sure to come from the rest of the candidates. From AdFreak. Labels: ads, politics, video, youtube

Justin.tv...to become youtube live? ![]() Starting July 16, ANYONE can broadcast on Justin.tv. For those not already glued to Justin all day, all the time, Justin's the guy who strapped a camera to his hat, began broadcasting every minute of his life, and never looked back. Ever wanted to broadcast your life? Here's your chance. Justin is opening up the network. They're adding 30 new channels of people broadcasting their lives between now and the 16th. There's already some fun and interesting people on the new JustinTV channels. And on July 16, they're allowing the public to join the party. I predict even more fun. Facebook and eHarmony's love child Bear with me here. I wanted to post about a great article in this month's (May) Fast Company all about brand authenticity called Keeping it Real. As luck would have it, that is the ONE story not available on their Web site. WHAT IS on the site is another interesting story about Facebook CEO and rugrat millionaire Mark Zuckerberg and how much he enjoys wearing flip-flops and telling Yahoo to shove its billion bucks. Chock full of hubris-y goodness. In light of that, enjoy this hilarious Facebook parody. Labels: facebook, parody, social media, web2.0, youtube
