youtube makes overlay ads easy

Until now, you might have needed an agency or someone with some production expertise to create an overlay ad for your YouTube video. Until now.

Just like Google has made adwords a breeze, YouTube announces their ad overlay making kit.

Fire your agency, and get on with it. Or - call your agency, increase their budget and let them do this for you. You're busy. You have real work to do.

money talks and social media walks

Just when you thought that everyone on earth has already done a YouTube contest and it's impossible to get any buzz with the same old "submit your video" idea comes a new YouTube mystery contest that's getting tweeted, blogged and otherwise socially loved.

They can't tell you exactly what the contest is for, what it's about, only that they're going to give away $100K. Proof that money still talks, even in the social mediaverse.

what happens if you enter every contest on youtube?

Meet Jake and Will. They want to make a film, and need $100,000 to do it. They also realized that there are countless companies doing YouTube video contests, and giving away some sweet prizes. As budding film makers, they figured that they've got a better chance than most at winning, so they've decided to enter every video submission contest that they can find.

It's working. They've launched Video Contest Warriors, to document their progress and adventures. And - they may even enter the Riunite contest (a Plaid client) where they'd have a chance at meeting their short term goal of $10K, in one fell swoop. (Do people really say "fell swoop" anymore?)

Here's a fun choose your own path adventure that you can play out on YouTube. The series educates viewers on why you don't really need to carry a knife around, or get in knife fights. (Unless of course, you work in advertising.)

This is great work that will suck your time away, and all for an educational non-profit cause. Thanks, Lee!

cleveland rocks. sort of.

Tourism councils pay attention: This video has several hundred thousand more views than the official Cleveland video. Maybe because it's fun. And funny. And it resonates with things people experience every day. It's also the second result in a Google search for Cleveland, tourism. Woops.

If you're in tourism, this might be the best example of why it's time to let your agency do something awesome, instead of a video that the entire board of directors and the city council of senior citizens would approve.

Either that...or the public might do it for you. From Coudal.

non profit raises 10K in a day on youtube

That headline is a little deceiving, as the non-profit we're talking about was featured on the YouTube home page. But even if you can't get that kind of positioning, YouTube's non-profit program sounds like a winner. Add overlays to your videos that drive traffic directly to your campaign site.

If you're not already a YouTube non-profit partner, get all of the details here.

CalebKramer shows us the FAIL sticker. Buy a pack of them, and stick them on anything in your life that's failing.

But wait...there's more. Tired of watching tv on your 726" flat screen? Now you can get that small-screen feel with handy YouTube stickers. Put them on the corner of any old-school tv, and you'll be fooling your friends into thinking they're watching the internet. Fun for the whole family.

internet pop culture school

Sadly, there is no internet pop culture school. But if there were - the first class would be to watch everything on Greg Rutter's Definitive List of the 99 Things You Should Have Already Experienced On The Internet Unless You're a Loser or Old or Something.

New internet employers should require their employees to watch everything on this list.

Even better - the next time you're at a party, and someone says "grape stomp?? what's that??" you'll have a remedy. Instantly send Greg's list to the offending dork, and you'll be making the world a better place.

video your vote

In a meeting with another agency yesterday, we were lol'ing about how every brand wants a promotion that asks users to upload video of themselves. And how these promotions have become so ubiquitous that many are invisible.

So it's cool to see PBS ask their viewers to video tape the election...not just because you distrust that your vote would be counted - not just because the system is all screwed up in your town, making it difficult for people to vote - but because PBS is a brand that you believe in, and you want to help them cover the process.

They ask you to participate because of your love of the brand.

"We live in an era where everybody on earth is asking you to submit a video...if you're going to share your thoughts with anybody, this is the place."

YouTube just launched a very interesting new feature. The ability to link to specific points in a timeline of a video. Sure, that's awesome when you want to send your friend an important video, and link to the very moment of importance.

But this has got some neat promotional aspects too. What about contests that link to specific parts of videos that allow users to complete a puzzle? Loads of ideas. TechCrunch has all the details on how to do this.

what now for weird al?

The Catch Up Lady chats about a recent Wired article on Weird Al Yankovic. And how his act is now done by teenagers on YouTube from the safety of their living rooms. He perfected the music video parody, and then the internet gave us all the means to produce them on our own.

Catch Up Lady has a couple of ideas on how Weird Al could own social media. I've got a feeling that Weird Al isn't so worried. But I like that his name is only a misspelling away from Wired Al. That should be his new thing.

Here's a really cool post featuring some behind the scenes juice from the director of video field production on the Obama campaign.

There are a bunch of interesting links and details - like the fact that the average viewer of videos on BarackObama.com and YouTube.BarackObama.com is 45-55 years old, and those viewers want long-form content - proving people have more attention span than we usually give them credit for.

how not to do social media

Please stop doing YouTube video contests, and pretending that it's a new, or exciting social media campaign. It's old, tired and lame, ok?

The people in those anti-fashion gold jackets have launched a YouTube campaign to show your house, and promote their real estate company. Here's the clincher: You must list your house with them, must include your listing agent in the video, and must shoot the video while the sun is at 43 degrees from the horizon. Yikes.

YouTube contests have become so ho hum that some bloggers even refuse to cover them any more. Amen. Please, please, please hire an agency that uses social media to create your social media campaign for you. Just sayin'.

Duh. In case you didn't already know, consumer generated/distributed media is a really big deal.

A new study from Nokia claims that by 2012, a quarter of all entertainment will be created, edited and shared within peer groups rather than coming out of traditional media groups.

In an attempt to coin a new buzz word (cuz we need more of those,) Mark Selby, Vice President, Multimedia for Nokia says that a quarter of media will be ‘Circular’: "The trends we are seeing show us that people will have a genuine desire not only to create and share their own content, but also to remix it, mash it up and pass it on within their peer groups - a form of collaborative social
media.”

nbc tries social media. then forgets to update.

To promote the new NBC show Chuck, a new show about a computer geek (modeled after Geek Squad guys, I guess), they've created a dashboard to emulate Chuck's machine.

There are some very good ideas implemented. They've integrated Chuck versions of today's more popular social media tools like delicious, Ning, Twitter and others.

But they seem to have dropped it at that. Chuck's Twitter page seems to be dead, past his initial Twitter, as seen above. Same goes for many of the social sites setup in Chuck's name.

Not sure if the agency is taking a break, if NBC's budget didn't carry this far, or they're just waiting for something...but that's a mistake.

The lesson for businesses here is that if you're going to USE social media, use it. Don't create an empty Second Life presence, an empty Twitter page, or non-active social network page. It would be better not to embrace it at all. Chuck just lost an opportunity to build anticipation for his big debut. Later, Chuck.

Can't find your way around the social media landscape? How about a map? Someone's created a new world map, based on the population of the major social sites.

While the maker clearly points out that this is "Not a complete survey. Sizes based on most complete information I could find," wouldn't it be amazing if we could get some programming genius to hook this up and make it real? So that land masses grow or shrink based on available stats?

WHAT IS on the site is another interesting story about Facebook CEO and rugrat millionaire Mark Zuckerberg and how much he enjoys wearing flip-flops and telling Yahoo to shove its billion bucks. Chock full of hubris-y goodness. In light of that, enjoy this hilarious Facebook parody.
