take your canvas bags

Just tolerate the first 60 seconds of this video, and you'll be thankful. And then you'll want to watch it again and again, and sing along. And maybe work on a dance routine. Yes, it's over a year old - but canvas bags are really important now and Tim Minchin was just ahead of his time back in 2007.

how to make a snowboard video fun

You'd think that just about everything has been done in the world of snowboard videos. And that watching dudes ride rails would get boring after a while.

Mike Benson proves otherwise, and re-imagines the snowboard video by adding a single wonderous effect. Totally, totally awesome.

ruby tuesday attempts 'viral'.

Ruby Tuesday has a new online campaign. We're supposed to believe that they've blown up the wrong restaurant, in a publicity stunt gone awry.

Instead, it feels like a 'viral' attempt gone wrong. All of the right ingredients: explosions, humor, video and microsites. But those are just tools. Former Plaid intern Katie says it's lame. I agree.

Here's where they went wrong:
+ The content doesn't seem aimed at a specific audience. Tweens? Twenty somethings? Families? This doesn't seem to speak to any of them directly.
+ What's the message? Anything about the food? Or the dining experience? Is "change" enough to bring me into your restaurant?
+ It's not believable. Or "hilarious" as the YouTube poster suggests. It could have been produced in a manner that left the viewer thinking "is this for real?" (Think of the Burger King campaigns.) Or it could have left the viewers understanding that it wasn't anywhere near real, but actually hilarious. (Think Paris Hilton for prez)

I'm curious to know what Ruby Tuesday has paid for the (currently) 13K views on YouTube. And how this differentiates them from Applebees, TGI Fridays, and BENNIGANS.

so clean, you can lick it.

Apparently this is a real campaign. I have a hard time watching this. But maybe that's because I'm off a recent tour where we stay in places that I wouldn't even remove socks for fear of the disease-ridden creatures that live on the floor.

But if you enjoy watching girls licking things, and you need a hotel room clean enough to lick - then this campaign is for you.

ghosts, aliens and doomsday. now all in one easy to find place.

The internet is buzzing about ParaTube, the video sharing site for all things paranormal.

I wanted to share their most watched video with you, by embedding it here. But they don't allow that, without logging in. That's a poor decision by the creators of ParaTube. Sharing is what will make this successful - not forcing user logins.

That aside, there's some fun material here for ghost hunters and sci-fi fans. And for people who believe that it's all going to end in 2012. (The world. Not ParaTube. I'm sure ParaTube will live on through at least the 2020's.)

what's new?

At our office, we're always sending each other great internet finds. Like this beauty.

And I'm an obnoxious ass-hat, when I receive stuff that I've seen before. I usually hit reply to all and just say "olllllllld." Yeah, I'm a really charming guy like that.

Last night, Rob sent this piece. This is the third time I've seen this, since sometime last year. And it made me realize something pretty cool: Great, timeless entertainment will always feel fresh to those who haven't seen it. Even on the internets.

Even the things that have seen millions of views have only reached a small percentage of the internet audience. And that audience grows a little larger, and a little fresher, every day. Think about how many people in your circle of friends outside of the office still don't know what RickRolling is.

Everything old is new again in a year, on the internet.

So here's to keeping it fun, keeping it fresh, and glorious 1970's fashionistas.

how to sell a pair of really big jugs

People need to sell their stuff on eBay. There's a lot of other people selling their stuff on eBay. So people need to stand out from other people selling other stuff on eBay. What's a person who's selling stuff supposed to do?

The answer of course, is that you produce a commercial for the stuff you want to sell. And attract lots of attention.

Soon, consumers will hire agencies to produce entire viral campaigns. And toasters and bicycle parts will be sold. The world will be a better place.

Thanks Lia!!

spend a day and a half exploring the dark knight

Our resident Batman expert, Brian Garofalo points us to the massive online campaign that's been produced for the new Dark Knight release.

You can begin your experience on the I Believe in Harvey Dent site. Which will lead you to a batload of microsites, all produced around characters, brands or themes in the film. Extremely well done.

Here's Brian's list of stuff that you can explore so far:

ibelieveinharveydent.com
ccfabg.org/
gvafoundation.org
gothamcityrail.com
gothamcityclerk.com
trustgarcetti.com
www.clowntravelagency.com (click the envelope then follow the new url:www.acmesecuritysytems.com/delos)
trustgarcetti.com
thegothamtimes.com (click the Gotham Times logo on the paper for the "alternate version")

Yesterday, there was a worldwide scavenger hunt, that even involved phone numbers, voicemail and other goodies. Why work, when you can have fun like this??

If we were one of those massively humongous agencies, with cash flowing out in wheelbarrows, I'd build an art gallery wing off our office, purchase every piece of Jeremiah Palecek's work, and place them on permanent display.

remember when tv had writers?

Remember when there were new episodes of entertaining shows? Lost is gearing up to air what they have in the can for this season, and their launch campaign is cool.

They've placed billboards in various markets promoting Oceanic Air, the airline from the show. The ads promote the website for Oceanic Air, which has been 'hijacked' by the boyfriend of a stewardess on Flight 815. He leads you to his conspiracy site.

I can't remember the last time that I anxiously anticipated the airing of a tv show - but Lost is working overtime to make that a reality again.

how to produce a whopper freakout

You've seen the Whopper Freakout. Maybe you've wondered how the geniuses over at Crispin, Porter, Bogusky pulled it off. Are all of the people real? Actors?

Turns out they used some actors - but the real people reactions were so much better, they used them instead! Read all about this and more in the cool behind the scenes interview with the director, over at Creativity-Online. (Their site looks like it was hacked late last night - check this link later.)

By now you've probably seen the new BK spots. And maybe you've seen the clips from BK Freakout. And damn - Crispin Porter Bogusky has done it again.

An age old advertising concept - what would the world be like without your product - but realized in a style that only CPB could do.

As Make the Logo Bigger points out, they've managed to create a production that's so engaging, you won't mind spending 7+ minutes watching. A commercial. A 7+ minute long commercial - and you want to send it to your friends. Well done. Flame broiled and well done.

you are the future of media distribution.

Duh. In case you didn't already know, consumer generated/distributed media is a really big deal.

A new study from Nokia claims that by 2012, a quarter of all entertainment will be created, edited and shared within peer groups rather than coming out of traditional media groups.

In an attempt to coin a new buzz word (cuz we need more of those,) Mark Selby, Vice President, Multimedia for Nokia says that a quarter of media will be ‘Circular’: "The trends we are seeing show us that people will have a genuine desire not only to create and share their own content, but also to remix it, mash it up and pass it on within their peer groups - a form of collaborative social
media.”

gorbachev killed paul mccartney

I'd file this under hoax, urban legend, or 'other.' There's an ad that's been running in New York and other publications featuring an Annie Leibovitz photo of Mikhail Gorbachev.

When you enlarge the photo and translate the document poking out of his Louis Vuitton bag, it reads “Litvinenko's Murder — They Wanted to Give Up a Suspect for $7,000.” (Litvinenko is the Russian ex-spy dude that was killed with radioactive sushi.)

Whatever. But Paul is still dead.

disposable web pages

Oh, this is a sweet idea. With so many fun applications. Disposable web pages. Pages that you make on the fly, and they go away when you say.

Like the one that I just made. I've titled it "amount of time until Britney Spears implodes again," and used it to keep track of Britney's next meltdown. I'm predicting this will take place in about 46 days. Just a hunch.

But you can use disposable web pages to countdown anything your heart desires. Like a friend's birthday, an anniversary, an event, or how long until they cancel the Bionic Woman. Enjoy.
