mmmm. meatwater. ![]() Brooklyn based designer/photographer Till Krautkramer has invented the most delicious and refreshing beverage ever: MeatWater. MeatWater comes in all of your favorite flavors, including Beef Stroganof, Beef Jerky, Texas BBQ, and my favorite - Dirty Hot Dog. The same juice that powers the most awesome NYC hot dog carts. Mmmm. Get some. Pure parody fun. Found on Gothamist. Labels: package design, parody, productdesign, typography, yummyfood

signs, signs, everywhere are signs. ![]() Eye Candy points to a sweet Flickr pool of sign photos. Signs can tell you so much about the culture and the times of their creation. One of my all-time favorite things to photograph, and view. This Flickr set is awesome. Apollo sign above shot by Anglerove. it's snowing typography ![]() We've seen the first snow here in New England. So it's a good day to share typography snowflakes. (Cmon, nobody's actually getting work done this week anyway. Your boss is practically expecting you to fill your day sending your friends type snowflakes.) Found at the glorious How magazine. Labels: holiday, typography

HP's new campaign - something for everyone. ![]() HP's got a wonderful new campaign that's been making the rounds. The piece features profiles of Jake Burton and hotalicious cute muffin Gwen Stefani. But here's what really got my attention. They also profiled Paula Scher. (Watch her profile, if you don't already know who she is.) They've provided something really amazing here. Paula has designed several business templates for small businesses. This is the equivalent of Philippe Starck bringing products to Target. Fantabulous design for people that couldn't ordinarily afford great design. I've met countless small business owners with their business identities that were designed by their cousins, or that utilized a bad template, with perforated business cards from Staples. It's embarrassing. Paula Scher has produced an acceptable option for those that can't afford to hire real graphic designers. Sweet. Awesome brand building, HP. sketchbooks to make you jealous Sooo sad that I missed this show at the NY Art Director's Club. An inside look into designers Moleskine notebooks. The clip above is what Paula Scher doodled on a flight to vacation. Because she's brilliant like that, and enjoys showing you her spectacularness, so that you can feel less talented about yourself. Or inspired. You choose. And - if you happen to be inspired, and want a funky new Moleskine to sketch in, check our House of Plaid site later this week. We're adding a limited edition Plaid sketchbook. It rawks. Labels: creativeinspiration, design directmarketing, illustration, typography

behind the sign at the new york times ![]() Pentagram has a typically brilliant case study on what's behind the design and production of the New York Times signage, at their new world headquarters building. Their challenge: how do you add a block-long, 15-foot-tall blackletter logo to the front of a minimalist building without obstructing the view of the Times staffers working inside? The answer is a sign made from almost 1000 individual pieces. Labels: architecture, newyork, outdoor, typography

lorem ipsum in the real world ![]() When designers need to place filler copy into a concept to present to a client, we'll typically use latin text - from an automated text generator. Designers (and many clients) will recognize that the first two words in this filler are always "Lorem Ipsum." Apparently, someone at Home Depot mistakenly thought this was Spanish. Designer, asleep at the wheel. Labels: design, retail, typography

how to reach male viewers: crotches ![]() Designers, producers, creative directors - if you're attempting to reach the male audience, we need more crotch. This, according to a study by some scientists who hooked people up to fancy equipment and watched what they watched. To be fair, it doesn't appear that they included boobies in their study. There's also some great insight to copy layout/typography, and how people read (and retain information) on a page. Good news: white space is still in. Labels: design, typography

samuel l jackson's typography can kick your ass This is awesome. A classic scene from Pulp Fiction, realized with motion graphics and typography. What a great idea that should be creative inspiration to spawn hundreds of alternate versions. Think of all the films with countless favorite scenes that could be re-lived in a new way. Type mashups. what smart kids do at art school ![]() As a part of her MFA Thesis Project at the Visual Research Laboratory, State University of New York, Amy Papaelias created TypeTalk Fonts. Most kids would produce a couple of fonts, and call it a day. But no. She's create a tool where you can type in a sentence, and it will automatically "translate" the sentence into the "language" appropriate for that font. For instance, "So I told him, we'd better get going." translates to "So I told him, like we'd better get goin', you know." using the Shy Slacker tool. If she's doing this caliber stuff in college, I imagine she'll be controlling the world in about five years. From Notcot. Labels: typography, web2.0

typography pin-up girls ![]() Definitely racy, but so not dirty. This calendar is an Epica Award winning self-promo piece from Taylor Lane. What designer (male or female) wouldn't happily display these hotties? Evidently, while the calendar was hanging on walls all over Britain, Taylor Lane experienced a 25% increase in business from new and existing clients. Hmmmm.
