business cards...really?

The other day we rush printed new business cards for some of us heading to SXSW. (Check out my new title!)

You can't go to a major conference like SXSW without cards, right? Wrong. I handed out about four cards. Maybe five, if you include the card that was required to get a free t-shirt at the Veer booth.

And for me, SXSW was all about meeting people. I met hundreds of new people. Some amazing people. Some really smart people. The thing is, they don't need my card. And I don't need theirs. If we made a mark on each other, we know how to find each other - and we've probably already connected on Twitter.

People like Steve Rubel are really proud of the fact that their Twitter ID is now on their card. (We've been doing this for years.) I ask: do we really need cards at all?

We are in desperate need for a universal contact exchange (that people are willing to adopt) that does not involve paper. Plenty of companies have invented this, but no one has created a product that's hit the hot button. Yet. This has to come soon. Maybe Google, Facebook or Twitter will make it happen. Or maybe we'll just keep printing rectangular squares with website addresses on them.

How many pieces of paper have you left behind, recently?

not going to austin? fake it.

Plenty of interactive geeks from across the land are on their way to Austin, Texas to partake in the SXSWinteractive conference. (We're covering our adventures, in a SXSW edition of BFFB.)

Maybe your boss wouldn't approve the budget. Or you're afraid of Texas. Or you have work to do.

If that's the case, SwissMiss has started a #VirtuallyAttendingSXSW hashtag, and will be tweeting away. And there's plenty of other people who have joined in on the fun.

If you're more of a lurker, and less of a tweeter, we suggest that you keep an eye on @tsand's Twitter stream. He's been known to create his own ImagicationSXSW, that's pretty much guaranteed to have you spitting coffee into your keyboard.

Going to Austin? Give any of the Humongo crew a shout. We want to drink Texas beer with you. Details and links here.

We're heading to SXSW!

The Humongo crew is headed to Austin, TX for SXSW, the annual music, film and interactive super festival. We'll be attending the geekiest portion of the conference - SXSWinteractive.

Stuck at home? Not to worry. We'll be doing our best to share our experience. And we're also producing a series of videos interviewing interesting people that we believe you might be inspired by.

Check the Brand Flakes for Breakfast SXSW Edition for the latest from all of the Humongo superstars (and friends):

Darryl Ohrt: That's me, the official Prime Minister of Awesome at the world's greatest agency.

Chris Spada: Designer, creator, and now blogger at Humongo. He'll be hitting Austin for the first time. Chris will also be covering the conference at CT's creative powerhouse ConnCreatives.

Kristien Del Ferraro: From our new awesomely cool parent company Source Marketing, Kristien will be sharing her internet genius, and also hitting the geek festival as a first timer.

Ben Kunz: Thought leader, Business Week writer, blogger for Thought Gadgets, and man of brilliance from media buying and strategy firm MediAssociates will be interviewing the internet's brightest people on BrandFlakes video.

Renato Ghio: (Yes, that's a wig.) The master with a HD camera and editing suite in his backpack, he's the man responsible for all of the world-famous PlaidNation tour videos. He'll be producing the best interviews of the smartest people.

So make room for a little bit of Texas!

rally the cause changes the world

Our friend @scottyhendo and his friends are up to some awesome goodness.

Their company Cause Shift is producing remarkable, innovating thinking for non-profits. They just launched a new campaign We Can End This, a nationwide campaign to end hunger.

They'll also be facilitating a "Cause Lab", to be kicked off at SXSW in a few days, that will pull together some of the industry's brightest people for brainstorming, strategic thinking and conceptualization on how to best make this happen market by market across the country.

Think you can't make a difference? Here's proof that a handful of people can pull together some of the biggest brands and thinkers in the business to make magic happen.

(Oh - and if you're going to SXSW, bring a can of food with you. Or participate in the Cause Lab, and help make change happen.)

Disclosure: We friended Scott on the PlaidNation tour, he's since become a client, but that doesn't change our opinion that this is revolutionary breakthrough work.

dude, you're in my space

Alan Rapp over at Design Observer riffs brilliantly about the origin of "personal space." The concept was coined by Robert Sommer in the 1969 book Personal Space: The Behavioral Basis of Design and influenced everything from hospital layouts to abortion-picketing laws. Sommer has largely been forgotten, but his idea of different spatial bubbles having different uses was debated at SXSW this spring as the reason why consumers like text messages on cell phones but not on giant flat-panel TVs.

Don't tell Microsoft, though. We hear they're still working on a convergence device.

friday flakes episode eleven

Today's Friday Flakes is taped in the elevator vestibule at Plaid, and is hosted by David, RJ and Darryl.

This week, we chat a lot about SXSW:
+ How David and Darryl were lazy screw ups and didn't post to the BrandFlakes SXSW edition as often as they were supposed to
+ How ATT failed big time in their ability to handle 4000 iPhone tweeters in one place
+ That Twitter has changed the social dynamic and it's now acceptable to ignore your friends while you tweet away
+ How BBQ and Lone Star beer are an acceptable diet
+ The SXSW awards show rocked, and featured a funny parody of the popular Chris Brogan "Open Invitation" video. (Which T-Sand had done an equally funny version, ages ago.)
+ Facebook announced new features of Facebook Connect, which will allow Facebook to connect to your iPhone, among other things

We also announced some exciting news about this summer's PlaidNation tour:
+ Ford Motors has signed on as the first official sponsor to the tour, and we'll be riding in style in a sweet Ford Flex!
+ We've finalized this year's route, and will be visiting Detroit, Milwaukee, Chicago, Indianapolis, St. Louis, Kansas City, Branson, Memphis, Jackson and New Orleans.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

everything's coming together now

One of the more exciting things that we learned about while attending SXSW this year was Facebook's announcement about their Facebook Connect product.

With the latest version of Facebook Connect, developers can produce iPhone applications that utilize Facebook logins and allow users to share experiences, information and actions with their Facebook friends. Additionally, Facebook Connect has now made it easier than ever to integrate their login into nearly any internet application.

One cool example: Twitter users who are tweeting with Tweetdeck can now send a tweet and decide to publish to their Twitter stream, their Facebook newsfeed, or both. You can also receive your friends status updates in Tweetdeck - so you can magically keep up with everything in one snazzy dashboard.

This has agencies like us pretty pumped. Think about the 175 million Facebook users. And know that more than half of all mobile web traffic is now coming from iPhones.

We see practical uses for nearly all of our clients. iPhone applications that let users play games together. Blog comments that are shared across a user's Facebook news feed. There are countless opportunities, possibilities and solutions. Let's chat. Let's get started.

say goodbye to the blogroll

More SXSW awesomeness! Famous VC dude Guy Kawasaki, founder of Alltop, (the incredible list of all the top everything) has launched your personal Alltop.

It's called MyAlltop. You can think of it as the celebrity playlist for the internet.

We're partial, because BrandFlakesForBreakfast is featured in several Alltop categories. That's how the greatest blog in all of the land rolls, yo.

We haven't set up our own personal Alltop (definitely will soon), but really like the concept. I can see this completely replacing the old practice of including blog rolls (a list of a blogger's favorite blogs) on their blogs. Now you can accomplish the same thing with just one link. Nice.

robots and celebrities coming together for goodness

One of the many awesome things that we learned about at SXSW this year was the Social Media SmackDown. (We'll be reporting about even more cool things over the next few days as we finish decompressing/detoxing)

This was launched at the Mashable party during SXSW, with loads of robot fun. Some of our friends from the west coast were pretty deeply involved in putting this together.

This promotion pits celebrity teams together in a contest to raise money for non-profits. We like the idea - because it brings together real celebrities with pretend celebrities (social media experts) for the greater good. We also like that it promotes the charity more aggressively than it does the brands involved - which gives the event more authenticity from a non-profit perspective.

Oh, and anything with a robot theme always rocks. Always.

how to do sxsw without doing it

Didn't make it to SXSW, the interactive, film and music conference in Austin, Texas? Instead of sitting back getting all annoyed at how conference attendees took over Twitter for a couple of weeks, you could attend virtually.

That's what Todd Sanders did. There are thousands of SXSW photos being tweeted and uploaded to Flickr. And Todd's got a few friends here, too. So, he's created his second "imagication." This time, he's Photoshopped himself into attendance at the famed interactive portion of SXSW.

See how Todd joined us for lunch at the Jackelope yesterday. Or maybe you can spot him attending a panel, above. He's still "here" - so stay tuned for more fun. Hilarious.

even if you're not at sxsw, check this out

Pepsi scores big with their sponsorship of SXSW - and with this super delicious mashup of the SXSW Twitter stream. Even if you're not at the interactive/music/film conference , you can enjoy watching what's happening while it's streaming and graphing and making your browser look a coloriffic twitterlicious soft drink.

This is a fantastic idea that could live with other events where Twitter is prevalent too. Think of any major televised event, or other conferences. Impressive. I'm going to get me some man-Pepsi, right now.

plaid heading to sxsw!

We're heading to Austin, Texas to attend SXSW! Maybe it's the bbq, maybe it's the Lone Star Beer. Or maybe it's because thousands of the internet's smartest, brightest and most creative people are converging together in Austin, Texas to share thoughts, ideas and inspiration.

Coworker David Plain and I will be tweeting, blogging, vlogging and photo posting just about everything that happens at SXSW - so if you're interested, you can share the experience. So as not to clutter up good ole BrandFlakes, we've again launched a SXSW Edition of BrandFlakesForBreakfast. If you're at all curious, check it out.

But it doesn't end there. Thanks to the awesome tools that the social media gods have laid down on us, you can follow our every move. Here's all of the links that you'll need, to shadow our SXSW experience:

Twitter:
Minute by minute updates, posts, happenings and adventures will be posted on Twitter. 140 characters at a time.

Tumblr
This is a fantastic blogging tool that we've completely fallen in love with. Things that can't be summed up in 140 characters on Twitter will be posted on our individual Tumblr pages. Look for photos, videos, notes from the speaker panels and whatever else might happen.

poken: different than poking someone on facebook

And it's not like Pokemon, either. Poken is this new device that lets you trade your social media contact info with other Poken users through electronic transfer. You just touch your Poken to their Poken (yeah, I know how that sounds) and the magic stuff happens. Then you plug your Poken into your computer, and get all of your contact's details.

This would be really cool if everyone that was anyone already had a Poken. But can you imagine being the only guy at the party with a Poken? Excuse me, would you like to touch my Poken?

Idea: Give them to every registrant at SXSW. If they have any chance of taking off, that's the crowd. That's the place. That's the time.

meet real people when you travel

Jared Goralnick has some excellent advice on how to use social networks to improve your travel experience.

And this isn't just a theoretical blog post. Jared practices what he preaches. I met Jared at SXSW, thanks to his efforts on Facebook and one of the SXSW social sites. Now Jared's traveling the globe and meeting interesting people along the way. And he's detailed exactly how you can do the same on your next trip.

If you've ever wondered how social networks could benefit you personally, here's yet another wonderful example. Jump in. The water's fine.

sched.org: people really dig this

Some are saying that the big hit to come out of SXSW this year is Sched.org. You can view the schedule I attempted to stick to here.

People used it to get a feel for what was happening at the conference, to see what their friends might be doing, and to keep track of where they were supposed to be going. It exports to your iPhone, and so much more. I saw it open on countless laptops while at the conference.

Made by Chirag Mehta and Taylor McKnight, this is certainly a tool that has some wonderful opportunities - and at the very least, should be a part of every future conference.

don't you wish your moleskine looked like this?

Mike Rohde took some really good notes, while at SXSW. Yes, he captured the most salient points of the panels he attended. But unlike you or I, he managed to beautifully illustrate them.

These super glorious notes weren't done after-the-fact. This was done LIVE, during the panels, sometimes even in the front of the room, on a huge sketch pad, for all to see. I watched them myself during at least one of the panels. And now you can enjoy them all, in his Flickr photoset. Amazing.

You should invite him to your next event's keynote, and then give limited edition prints of his notes to all of the attendees.

what's the difference?

While David, Rob and I were at SXSW last week, one of the events we popped into was 20x2. They ask 20 people a question, and each person gets 2 minutes to share a response. The question for this event was "What's the difference?"

One of the best responses was presented by Thomas Crenshaw, with a video, which just found its way to YouTube. Enjoy. (Conservatives: Contains the F word in it's printed form. Hopefully you won't faint.)

the free economy is coming

Maybe you've read some of Chris Anderson's writings about the coming 'free' economy. There was a good discussion regarding the theory at SXSW this week, between Mark Cuban and Michael Eisner.

It's happening. The free economy saved David's life the other day. We had just enjoyed some "nuclear" tacos at the SXSW conference. Rob was crying like a little baby, and his nose was running, and his belly was aching. Then the hot hit Dave. He ran out of the taco area, like a man on fire. And what did he find?

The Ice Cream Man. Not just any ice cream man - but the Ice Cream Man who's on a quest to giveaway 500,000 free ice cream treats. Through sponsors, love and goodwill, it's working.

What could your brand make free?

sneakers as a conversational tool

I'm not much of a conversationalist. Especially when it comes to introducing myself to strangers. But I love sneakers. Really, really love sneakers. And sneaker culture has become its own phenomena - turning shoes into an unexpectedly cool tool, for me.

While sporting some sweet Adidas Gazelles yesterday (above), I met Henning Von Vogelsang, at SWSW. Our paths would likely have never passed, if he didn't stop to comment on my shoes, and on his love for Adidas.

That's when I realized that odd sneakers are my conversation agent. It's a starting point in situations where I might not otherwise introduce myself to people. And it works like magic in a room full of strangers.

Later that night, attempting to meet someone that I only know through the internet, I twitter him to "look for teal and yellow adidas sneakers" at the Google party. Because other than that, internet geeks pretty much all look the same. At the Google party, my internet friend successfully found me, and as he announced that it was the sneakers that gave me away, another complete stranger shouts out - "I just read about those sneakers on Twitter." And another introduction was made.

Today, I'll be sporting my flourescent yellow, pink and green Nike's. Watch out. Lots of new people to meet.

avatars for your hands

Internet avatars are so yesterday. The coolest people are wearing physical avatars.

While at SXSW, we met John Unger, who among other things, has created Emoodicons - the the first ever mood ring/emoticon mashup. One of those "wish I thought of it" ideas.

(Be sure to watch our continued coverage of our SXSW experience on the BrandFlakes SXSW edition.)

twitter lovefest at sxsw. Mat says FU.

I've gone on and on and on about the wonderous tool, Twitter.

It popped big time at SXSW last year. At this year's conference, it's the communication medium of choice, too - as attendees use it to share what parties are hot, what panels are interesting, what celebrities are at the taco joint on Sixth Street. Which is awesome, if you're at SXSW, but might be annoying, if you're not.

Well Mat was fed up, and is now getting everyone back. He's at home in San Francisco, but tweeting as if he's here at SXSW. Pretty funny stuff, if you've been annoyed at all of the SXSW tweets of the last few days.

Related, (and sure to annoy the crap out of Mat), twemes.com is a cool mashup of Twitter, that allows the tagging of tweets with the same theme. So you can track whatever meme of the moment might be important to you. The SXSW version is pretty much on fire, as you might expect.

(I just realized that if my mom were to read this post, she'd have absolutely no idea what that last sentence means. Buzzwords out of control.)

Tweet on.

this week at Plaid

Here's what happened this week at the world's most 'don't mess with Texas' design and branding firm:

Today was Matt's birthday. I don't know how old he is, but he's freaking young, so he's got nothing to worry about. At Plaid, we love our birthday cake. Mmmmm. Some of the team is at SXSW, so we setup an ooVoo chat (pictured above), so that David, Rob and myself could sing the birthday song along with the rest of the crew. I'm sure that Matt's saving us each a piece of sweet cake.

So David, Rob and I are rocking out at SXSW. What an awesome time. (If you don't count the closing of Dallas airport, and the breaking of the iPhone.)

We found out that a poster David designed for Westport Playhouse is going to be used as a prop in a movie, A Kiss at Midnight with Annabella Sciorra. They actually sought out the poster, after seeing it, and wanted to feature it. I fully expect David to win an Oscar for this.

We began beta testing the most awesome project for Segway. Lots more on this one, soon.

We're interviewing like mad for a couple of positions, and should be narrowing the field down a bit next week. Can't wait to get new fresh faces at Plaid. We're all getting a little tired looking at Dave's ugly mug.

Stay tuned with what's happening at SXSW over at our SXSW Edition of BrandFlakes. David, Rob and I will be posting to the blog, and our individual Tumblr pages. Here's links to the Tumblrs, which are lots of fun:

this week at Plaid:

video

Here's what happened this week at the word's sweetest design and branding firm:

We visited Segway headquarters!! Met some great people, had some productive meetings, and more important than anything...we got to see where Segways are born. The factory. They even let us test drive an x2. (Which Giuli won't stop talking about.)

I started using AskSunday. If you haven't already heard about it, check it out. Pretty awesome service. Basically, you get to outsource yourself. This week, I used Ask Sunday to research airfares, book airfares for SXSW, and renew a magazine subscription that had lapsed. All stuff that I didn't have time to do on my own.

Our CARPET ARRIVED!! If you've been following our remodeling saga, we've added a new area to our space. Construction has been completed, other than carpet, for what seems like 2 years. Today, the carpet installers arrived, and the space is ready for action. We start moving furniture into the joint next week!

Matt launched a site for A Fine Frenzy, just for Valentine's Day. You can still send your lover a sweet little Fine Frenzy message, if you'd like.

We've started to prepare for our trip to SXSW. We're going to be sharing our experience, with an eye toward what's cool for clients. We'll be blogging, twittering and broadcasting everything. Even when David gets really drunk and starts yelling at people. Should be a blast. If you're attending, please let us know. We'd love to share a BrandFlakes beer together.

We're off to enjoy a nice three day weekend, thanks to some dead presidents. You should too!

this week at Plaid:

Here's what happened this week at the world's most superbowl-ready creative agency:

They nearly finished our addition. It's pictured above. The custom wainscoting and lights were installed. All that's left is some staining, and carpet. All due for installation next week, if we're lucky. It's looking AWESOME.

Big news: We've decided to embark on another Plaid road tour, this summer! It's looking like we're coming to the west coast, for a couple of weeks in July. Brian's already mapping out potential routes. We'll begin sharing details real soon.

We were featured in Inc Magazine! Well, if you can call a paragraph in an article on blogging a feature, I guess. Maybe that's a stretch of the word - but we're proud anyway.

A few of us are going to SXSW!! We're totally stoked, as none of us have ever gone before. And we've never been to Austin, Texas, either. Should be a Texas size load of fun. We're planning on sharing the entire experience with you. We're setting up a special edition of Brandflakes, and will be blogging, Twittering, and more live from the show. If you're going, please let us know - we want to buy you a drink!

We're off for a weekend of beer guzzling, SuperBowl watching, and ad criticizing. Happy SuperBowl, everyone.
