i know your face
Just as I'm posting about the end of business cards, @paulmcenany tweets about Recognizr, a new mobile app that uses facial recognition and augmented reality to connect the people that you meet with the social networks that you use.
Right now, the user has to opt in before they'll be recognized, but surely sometime in the future, we'll give up all privacy and go all in. And I'll snap a photo of you from across the street and immediately become your friend. Or you'll just wear a mask, and avoid contact, because you're anti-social like that.

youtube makes overlay ads easy

Until now, you might have needed an agency or someone with some production expertise to create an overlay ad for your YouTube video. Until now.
Just like Google has made adwords a breeze, YouTube announces their ad overlay making kit.
Fire your agency, and get on with it. Or - call your agency, increase their budget and let them do this for you. You're busy. You have real work to do.

maybe you've seen this.
This is probably old to you, but I've been stuck in a cocoon of social media geeks in Austin, Texas for the last few days, so I've got some catching up to do.
If you haven't seen this, then here's an excellent answer to the question of "I don't get ChatRoulette." Or "How is ChatRoulette entertaining?"
If you have already seen this, and you're saying instead "dude, i expect only the freshest internet meat when I visit BFFB", not to worry. We've been a little crazy, busy, drunk, and blogging all about SXSW.
More fresh meat tomorrow.

social media can sell burgers

Here's a super awesome case study on how a local burger joint in Milwaukee used Four Square to pack his restaurant with patrons, more than doubling his typical Sunday sales.
That's a 110% increase in business without an agency, without advertising, without super bad tv spots. It's a good day for burgers and fries. From @DJLitten

chat roulette chick challenge

You've probably already seen your local news station sensationalizing the dangers of the the new internet hit Chat Roulette, a social video chat service that pairs random visitors with other random visitors for instant video chat. (Hilarity, freakeeness and NSFW activities ensue.)
Now French Connection has launched a new promotion on the controversial network that will pay cash to any man (or woman) who can successfully seduce a woman on Chat Roulette.
Awesome timing with a new tool that's getting loads of buzz and yet somehow directly on target for a slightly edgy fashion brand. Good sleazy fun for anyone who wants it.

Maybe you've heard about Please Rob Me, a site devoted to tracking Twitter and FourSquare updates and aggregating tweets of people that aren't home.
Len Kendall has created something better: Please Don't Rob Me, a site that pulls together tweets with the keywords "Don't Rob Me" OR "someone robbed me" OR "I own a gun" OR "i set a trap".
The result is a pretty funny collection of "don't rob me" tweets, like "my apartment is reinforced with voodoo." From Culture-buzz.

If you're worried about which tool is the best, who is going to win, or believe there's only room for one, then you'll want to check out Google vs. Facebook. Sign in to both and see which of your friends respond on which network.

how mullen and radian 6 turned the superbowl into a marketing victory

As an agency, Mullen wants to get attention from marketers. And social media monitoring service Radian 6 wants to speak to agencies and brand people. They both know that Superbowl is the one television event that brings everyone together for the night.
Together, they created BrandBowl 2010 , a site that monitored the Twittersphere for chatter about the Superbowl ads, and measured the sentiment. The best ads were ranked on a live leaderboard with live chat streamed in too.
The genius behind this creation was that it spoke to their audience perfectly. Agency people and marketers alike now experienced a live demonstration of the Radian 6 product. And they did so with an excellent presentation by Mullen. Classic "create for your audience" marketing that made many agencies (including us) thinking "wish I thought of that."

Twuition is like your personal assistant on Twitter. Want to know the temperature in Miami? Ask Twuition. Or the nearest location of a business? Twuition to the rescue.
Here's how it works:
Type in the appropriate hashtag (ie: twuitionweather, cityname), and @twuition will respond to you with the answer.
There are currently four or five hashtags being serviced that include weather, locations, product pricing and a couple of others. It's all paid for by sponsored tweets. (Which, since you don't expect Twuition to be a real human, we suppose is ok.)

facebook: the power of change for small business

Here's a cute story about how Facebook (and more importantly, a retailer's fans) made a difference for a small business. Coffee Labs, a dog friendly emporium in Tarrytown, NY got into trouble with their local health department for being dog friendly.
The business created a fan page for local dog owners to declare their love for the shop. Facebook + cute dogs + coffee = local tv magic. Naturally, this gets picked up by the local news, and before you know it, a local attorney gets involved and writes a waiver for the coffee shop.
Small business, small change, that made a difference in one community. Would your customers come to your rescue?

digital music marketing genius.

Check out the new C-Mon & Kypski video, currently being produced. You can watch the video as it is being produced, ONE FRAME AT A TIME. Even better, you can add yourself to the production (as many times as you'd like) by contributing frames to the video.
Charlie at Curve Detroit points out that any business can learn from this creative feat. C-Mon & Kypski have done a bunch of things right:
+ They appealed to the 90% of the audience who might NOT want to participate because they're too shy, afraid, whatever - these people get to watch the process unfold.
+ They let the visitors that participate in the site become OWNERS of the product. Think they'll talk about it? Share it on Twitter or Facebook? Post about it? You bet.
This is crowdsourcing done smart, done well, and done right. Thanks, Charlie!

a place to put your name

Flavors.me is a place that aggregates all of your social stuff in one easy to find site. They're still in beta, but if they continue to add relevant social networks to their tool, this could be a good place to gather everything together.
So you meet someone at a conference, and you're too lazy (or your business cards are too small) to communicate your Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Tumblr, Vimeo, and all of the places that you exist in the social sphere. Give your new friends your Flavors.me address instead, and they'll have everything they need.

"i don't need to know what people are having for lunch"

Have a hard time explaining Twitter to your co-workers and friends? Has your boss tasked you with the responsibility of Twitter training to the rest of the staff?
Relax. Guy Kawasaki has outlined everything you need to demo Twitter to a newb, or confused co-worker.
Guy accurately points out that we're only in year three of the Twitterverse. It wasn't long ago that people doubted email and web browsing, and said things like “Why would I go to a web site when newspapers and magazines come to my house, I can see people in person or talk to them on the phone, get driving instructions by looking at my AAA map, and buy books by going to the mall?”
So take his advice and help your coworkers get up to speed in 2010. You'll all be better, stronger and more informed. (And you'll know what everyone is having for lunch.)

training 40,000 employees in social media isn't easy
You'll want to check out how Telstra is training their 40,000 employees across the globe in social media (an introduction is above.)
Their policy, which centers around responsibility, respect and representation (three awesome R's) is communicated through a presentation that is presented in the form of an interactive comic book. Cheezy to some, but it's hard to produce creative that resonates with a worldwide team of tens of thousands.
They've also put their entire social media training guide online for anyone to view. Why go public? Telstra says that "We have decided to open up this course to the scrutiny and feedback of the ‘outside world’ as it may assist other organisations and help raise the level of awareness about social media with staff.” Go Telstra.
That's an awesome, bold step that many firms would be scared to take. They'll benefit immensely from that action.

facebook a boon for small town tourism

What do you do when you're marketing a smaller tourism location? Disney, Paris, NYC and other international draws have million dollar campaigns and just as many resources at their disposal. But what about Lynchburg, Virginia?
Plenty of smaller markets have businesses, museums, fairs and events all worthy of attention. Small Biz Survival points out that Lynchburg, Virginia has been able to use Facebook advertising to bring real results to their campaigns.
Display advertising used to cost thousands of dollars, and now they're connecting with larger audiences for just hundreds of dollars. Think your market is too small? We'll bet there's a few hundred Facebook users that disagree. From @brickandclick.

your credit card is tweeting

What if your credit card could tweet every purchase you made? Sound totally ridiculous? That's essentially what Blippy does. While at first glance you might ask "why would I tweet that I just bought socks?" when you dig a little deeper, the benefits of Blippy technology are pretty interesting.
This is a potentially useful tool for financial and purchasing analysis. Sites like Mint let you budget and see how your spending stacks up against others on a wholesale level, but so far, there's nothing that allows you to compare that spending on a granular, purchase by purchase level. It's also creates new potential for location aware social networks like FourSquare or Gowalla. Your credit and debit cards know where you're at, so that you don't have to "check in" using your fat thumbs on a keyboard.
Plenty of people thought that a tool allowing users to share the fact that they're eating a grilled cheese sandwich had no value. The marketplace says otherwise. Retailers, location based businesses and marketers...this is worthy of exploration.

the tao of tweeting

Mashable has a great post that applies the centuries old Tao te Ching to the use of Twitter. He's come up with some pretty taotastic advice:
1. Show versus tell.
2. Have a passion for the process.
3. Find a balance.
4. Focus on what you can add, not on the technology.
Great advice, and the entire post is worthy of a read. First learn stand, then learn fly.

foursquare: golden opportunity for retail

@charliecurve and @ericurbane were having some interesting chat over the weekend in Twitterville. They both see FourSquare as one of the first location aware social services that allow retailers to connect with their customers in a new way.
FourSquare lets users tag where they're at, and where they've been. Doing so on multiple times lets you earn badges and credit, and if you check into any one place more than anyone else, you become "mayor" of the joint.
Charlie and Eric correctly point out that if you're in retail, this is a golden opportunity. Why not reward your Mayor? Have a contest? Give discounts to other FourSquare visitors? They're already shouting about your establishment...why not join the conversation?
And Facebook is coming to the party too...are you ready?

+ B2B use outpaces B2C use on YouTube, LinkedIn and Twitter
+ B2B use is nearly equal to B2C use on Facebook
+ Professionals working on this devote 21% of their time to it

kind of like twitter. and linked in. and facebook.

We suppose that you could call Sprouter a Twitter tool for pros. Sprouter is a new, twitteresque tool geared entirely to the workplace. They're seemingly to Twitter what Linked In is to Facebook.
They've included a couple of popular features from Linked In and Facebook, like organized topics and events. Since these don't really exist on Twitter, it might be cool to organize your tweets in this manner. They also allow you to claim hashtags, so that you can declare your authority on the matter.
Pretty cool concept, although they'll need to reach a critical mass to be a truly valuable business tool. This may be difficult, since everyone's already tweeting about their business life on Twitter. Do we need a professional tweet tool?
UPDATE:
Erin from Sprouter contacted us to say:
Sprouter isn't a tool for the workplace. It's a niche network specifically for entrepreneurs and startups to connect, collaborate, and engage in conversation. If you want more information about Sprouter you can check out our feature article in the National Post here, and I'd be happy to answer any questions.(email in comments)

your next tweet could be a new sitcom

If you haven't already heard of Sh*t My Dad Says, you'll want to check it out. The Twitter stream is that of Justin Halpern, who allegedly had to move back into his parent's basement. He makes the best of it by sharing daily hilarious quotes from his dad on Twitter (not all safe for work.)
It's become such a hit that CBS just picked up the concept for a new sitcom. Twitter. Birthplace of tomorrow's tv stars.

facebook invites: stop doing it wrong

Facebook has taken the time to build a fantastic system for reaching out to friends in extremely targeted ways. So why am I getting invited to a party halfway across the world, in Tel Aviv tomorrow night?
Peter Shankman writes about the five types of Facebook invites that shouldn't really need to happen. Funny and true.
Think about this before you invite all of your friends to your next event. From CC Chapman.

bringing twitter to the classroom

W. Gardner Campbell, director of the Academy of Teaching and Learning at Baylor University believes that Twitter can be a valuable resource in the classroom.
Imagine a classroom where students can tweet their questions and comments on the subject matter, projected on a screen at the head of the class. Imagine students having access to that stream after class, for additional discussion and additional input.
Sound far fetched? Actually, that's exactly the scenario that exists at SXSW (above) and other conferences. Why not bring the same level of communication and information to students?
Some say the distraction wouldn't do well in class. Campbell disagrees. Commenting on the possibility of a classroom filled with the clickety clack of keyboards, he says “That’s a godsend! Suddenly, I’m not just the one at the front just dispensing everything, and the students aren’t just sort of milling about doing their thing — we’ve actually got a team of people working together.”

twitter = second youngest of all social networks

ReadWriteWeb has some super interesting perspective on the population of the socialverse. When you look at the median age of each social network's audience, here's how they line up:
Twitter: 31
MySpace: 26
LinkedIn: 39
Facebook: 33
The report also shows that Facebook is getting older, as the retirement class continue to flock to the network. They also report that Gen Y is warming to Twitter - 37% of those 18-24 now use Twitter when only 19% did back in December 2008. Celebrities? Because their workmates are doing it? Who knows. What we do know: LinkedIn is for the super old. ;)
