print publishing: the new non-profit?

Giant Robot is the most awesome resource for Asian meets American pop culture. The trouble is, like most pubs on paper, not enough people are subscribing or paying for ads.

They've put together a pretty heart-touching video and fundraising site that explains their predicament and how they need your help.

Kind of makes you wonder if NPR-style fund-drives are the future of print publishing, doesn't it?

the definition of "cool" has changed.

Carol Phillips has an interesting take on hipsters and how the personality of trendsetters among the millennial generation has changed.

Carol suggests that today's influencers are the "doers" in their groups. So it's much less about fashion, and much more about what they're accomplishing. Doers are fixing, leading, changing, advocating, and entrepreneuring. So influencers are actually making a difference outside their circles of influence, and thereby gaining influence inside their circle of friends.

what it's going to be like in 2010

Ever wonder what the rest of this year might look like? Thankfully, it's all been spelled out in 2010: Living in the future.

It's pretty cool how some things are right on target:
While you are at school in one room, your parents may be at work in another. People who do office work do it at home. To keep in close touch with other people in their office they use the vision phone. The vision desk is connected to their firm’s computer, which stores all the office files. With this close contact between everybody in the office, it is easy to work from home.

awesomeness for your walls

LTL Prints has just created something pretty awesome. Giant wacky packages (younger folk might not remember that these were the Pokemon cards of the 1970's) that you can apply to your walls. They've made a deal with Topps and created a product that's an instant piece of art, conversation starter or homage to pop culturism.

Even better - the decals are removable and can be re-applied up to 100 times, which means even in you have a jerk of a landlord who won't let you customize your joint, you're in luck. I'm sure this is only the start to a licensed wall graphics empire.

the history of skateboard art II

The author of "Disposable: A History of Skateboard Art" wasn't content with his first bible of skateboard art and has published a new tome that chronicles the history of deck design even better than his first.

While doing some research on a new report from Yale that says sugary cereals advertise more than the healthier ones, I came upon an internet travesty: THEY TOOK DOWN THE CAP'N.

Possibly the tastiest cereal on the entire planet, and Quaker Oats didn't believe him worthy of an interim internet site. How does this happen? Did the Cap'n fall on hard times? Why is he not on Twitter so that we can ask him all of these important questions?

Please, please, please do everything you can to support the Cap'n. Call Congress. Call our President. Wake up the Quaker Oats marketing department. Introduce them to an agency that would never let this happen. Someone, please do something.

meet C3P0 in concert

“Say, aren’t you...?”

“Yes. I get that a lot.”

The most famous voice in movies? Probably. Anthony Daniels, the voice of C3P0, will be narrating the live Star Wars: In Concert when it premieres in the U.S. this October. Complete with all John Williams’ original score as played by a full orchestra. (It’s already premiered in London.) As for the most famous non-human in films this side of HAL, a writer friend met him once and said that while you knew instantly who he was without looking, it was a pain for someone with such a recognizable voice being typecast. How can you ever do romantic comedies after that, people! But, even doing something as simple as placing an order in a restaurant gives you away too.

Maybe, but I bet ordering a burger with American cheese never sounded so cool.

coke and pepsi fall in love on twitter

After years of sitting side by side on grocery store shelves and 7-11 coolers, you kind of wonder how they didn't fall in love before. It took the magic of social media to bring to opposites together, and romance has blossomed.

Here's how it went down:
Coke sends Pepsi a tweet. Pepsi responds. And then the Twitterverse suggests that they end the war and follow each other. And now Coke follows Pepsi. And Pepsi follow Coke.

how to save playboy

The publishing industry has fallen on hard times. Lots of magazines are closing up shop. And you're getting that feeling in your gut that Playboy is one of those publications that's not going to make it to the other side.

Saul Colt, often referred to as the smartest man in the world, has a plan to save Playboy. Here's the outline to Saul's plan:

1. Drop the naked ladies
2. Stop with the Rear View Mirror Air Fresheners
3. Go Back to your roots
4. Playboy should ask itself 20 Questions
5. Lock the doors to the Playboy Mansion

I have to agree. Playboy is a brand worth saving. They're not likely on the bailout list. And it's time to reinvent the brand, since people don't need to buy magazines to see naked chicks. Playboy: let's do something radical.
