how much is that moustache? ![]() Casey tells us about Moustache May. The internationally known month of moustache. If you don't sport the stache, you can buy your way in. By giving money, in honor of Casey's awesome stache. He's raising money for his local Humane Society shelter. Donate $20, and he'll send you a pic of him and his stache, doing whatever you say. I'm game. What she we have him pose with? Labels: nonprofit, photography

i see dead people. ![]() Walters Schels and Beate Lakotta have produced a most unique exhibition. They've interviewed and photographed people whose lives were coming to an end. And then, photographed them after death, too. Like Heiner Schmitz, an advertising executive, pictured above. At first, this is uber creepy, but then you realize that it's a window into the thing so many of us fear most. All of the subjects agreed to participate in the project, and wanted to share the story of their death. An excerpt from the introduction on the website: The majority of the subjects portrayed spent their last days in hospices. All those who come to such places realise that their lives are drawing to a close. They know there is not much time left to settle their personal affairs. Yet hardly anyone here is devoid of hope: they hope for a few more days; they hope that a dignified death awaits them or that death will not be the end of everything. (Sorry to be such a downer.) desktops are back ![]() Desktoptopia has released a product that feeds desktops to your computer. You can rate them, and it learns what you like, and continues to feed your desires. And there's a kabillion beautiful, cool and fun images. Hal Thomas, VP of Marketing at Desktopia, says they're open to including brand-styled desktops, too. Not the trashy stuff - but think entertainment properties, lifestyle brands, and things people would actually like on their desktops. I'm intrigued, because desktops have largely been ignored for the last few years. Not long ago, it was presented as the future of communication. What elements exist within your brands, that people might want on their desktops? Labels: branding, illustration, photography, technology

overpasses finally get their photo glory ![]() Sure, everyone takes photos of the mountains, and the flowers and the animals. But what about those impeccably designed, human engineered roads in the sky? Why does the overpass always get treated like the ugly kid at the party? Finally, the overpass gets its day in the sun. Ironic Sans has dedicated a portfolio of shots devoted entirely to overpass beauty. Overpass in the day, at night, naked, it's all there. It's like concrete porn. ten rules of lois ![]() The April issue of Metropolis has a wonderful spread devoted to the Esquire cover designs of legendary ad man George Lois. The piece features ten covers, with George's "rules" on their design. The Ed Sullivan cover above, accompanies rule #5: "If your magazine doesn't have the clout to sign up the celebrity you need for your idea, attack him at the stage door." You'll have to (gasp!) invest in the paper copy of the magazine for the other rules, because unfortunately, Metropolis doesn't have this spread available on line. You can view a truly inspirational gallery of covers with George's commentary, on his official site. Labels: adindustry, photography, publishing

verizon clueless? ![]() Apparently Verizon is including text ads on all of the photos uploaded to services like Flickr, from any of their cellphones. I really hope this isn't true. Really hoping that one of the largest cell phone providers isn't that out of touch with what's important to their users, to the industry and social media. I couldn't find examples in a quick search on Flickr, so I opted to include a photo of Rob, enjoying BBQ, instead. I think it's just as appropriate. Labels: mobile, photography, social media

stop fixing your hair ![]() Super vixen CK just nailed one of the best realizations about photographing life's wonderness. At any event, there's always the "we need a photograph" moments, where everyone stands in a group, arms over shoulders, and does their best not to blink when the flash pops (I am not capable of this, and it's ruined my modeling career.) In the end, it's these photos that always suck. The photos that make their way to the top, and into people's hearts are the shots that capture real human emotion. CK writes a beautiful post about the above photo of her meeting Arun for the first time. If you're a photographer, you're probably saying "duh" right now - but for the rest of us: can we all just refuse those group shots from here on? dead malls: zombie breeding grounds ![]() Just discovered a cool new blog, (thanks to Kevin Dugan, via Facebook) centered around retail history. Especially sweet are the photos of dead malls. We've seen the zombie movies, and know what can take place in abandoned malls. So it's nice that the people from Labelscar have put their lives on the line documenting this for us. Consumer culture gone dead is fascinating and sad, at the same time. Labels: photography, retail

how to get the best facebook photo ever ![]() Have a professional photographer take it, paparazzi style. Methodizaz is just that company. Tell them where you'll be, what kind of mood you'd like to be photographed in, and they'll take care of the rest. When you least expect it. For now, the service is only available in NYC - but I suppose it's just a matter of time before people in the great state of Kansas can get paparazzi, too. From swissmiss. photos of places you can't get into ![]() A cool article in Everywhere Magazine led me to Jonathan Haeber. The Everywhere Magazine piece has some cool shots of an abandoned cruise ship from the 1950's. Awesome yes - but then I discovered Jonathan's site. And then his Flickr page. Jonathan has the ability to get into places you're typically not allowed entry to. Maybe he's invisible. However he does it - he's captured some stunning shots of odd and beautiful places. Like Neverland Ranch, above. Labels: architecture, creativeinspiration, photography

It's released on line - and dependent on your preference, you can download a PDF (and even print it, if you hate trees), download a 30 minute audio podcast, or a 5 minute video podcast. Or download all three and dedicate your day to Bones Magazine. This issue is chocked full of really cool photography, illustration, art and inspiration. Enjoy. incredible (and sad) info graphics ![]() Who thought statistics could be so engaging? Chris Jordan has produced a stunning series titled Running the Numbers, An American Self-Portrait that portrays the quantity of something. Like the piece above, which depicts two million plastic beverage bottles. That's the number of bottles used in the US every five minutes. This is amazingly scary - definitely click through and see the zoomed versions of these works. Labels: art, photography, trends

urban outfitters launches flickr pool ![]() Urban Outfitters is rocking pretty well with this social media thing. They launched a killer blog some time ago. And now, they've launched a Flickr photo pool. This is a photo sharing pool, open to the public, where users can upload and view photos relating to Urban Outfitters. Like people wearing cool gear. What a fantabulous idea. Let your customers show how they use the products they buy from you. Let potential customers look at other users, for fashion ideas and trends. Photos like the sweet shot from GrannieShawna (above), sporting the most awesome plaid hoodie. I want that hoodie. tooth type. the next big thing. ![]() While flipping through the new issue of Future Snowboarding, I found a really cool idea. A feature piece on snowboard star Bryan Fox, featuring the killer portrait featured above. You've seen diamond and gold fronts on rap stars; and writing on, or customizing your body is far from new. But hand lettering on teeth is cool. Haven't seen a lot of that. How could you make this cooler? How about a video, with the entire message written on different mouths? Just an idea. people need a tribe ![]() This is AWESOME. Exactitudes is a 13-year collaboration between photographer Ari Versluis and stylist Ellie Uyttenbroek. It's a stunning reflection of how groups of people around the world express their individuality...by dressing alike. I've always referred to this phenomenon as tribes. People tend to dress like other people in their tribe - even if their goal is to be different. Our industry is famous for this - how many creative people do you know who frequently dress in black (me, today) and/or who wear the black-rimmed glasses that have become our uniform? Put that person at Walmart, and he stands out. But at the Art Director's Club awards, he blends right in. I've observed this on so many levels, within all age groups and interests. From punk rockers to the cycling community. From teens to grandpas. And it has everything to do with early adoption, branding and pop culture trends. And it's especially fun to see trends cross from one tribe to another. For me, this is the joy I get in watching people at a mall, an airport or city street. Hooray to Ari and Ellie for so beautifuly documenting this cultural phenomenon! Found on Josh Spear. Labels: fashion, marketing, photography, pop culture, trends, youthmarketing

forget how much it costs. let's jump in the mud. ![]() Just discovered the most fun trend ever. Trashing your wedding dress after the big day. Think about it - why spend 6 gatrillion dollars on a dress, and then just let it hang in the closet for 50 years? Go somewhere fun, get dirty, and photograph the event for everyone to see. Awesome. There's a host of photographers who specialize in Trash the Dress events - and there are even group trash the dress sessions, in fun locations like ghost towns. Allegedly, most dresses never get trashed beyond what a good dry cleaning couldn't take care of. (But who cares, anyway?) This would make a fun promo event for any brand related to bridal services.
