vote john smith for president The Chesapeake Bay is apparently getting all dirty and stinky. How do you raise awareness, and get people rallied around Chesapeake Bay pride? By finding a presidential candidate that supports the bay. Captain John Smith is that man. And there's a campaign site, too. Really hoping that he chooses the Cap'n Crunch for his running mate. A lot of churches don't have big ad budgets. Or content development budgets. So CrazyChurch comes to the table. Ready to deliver loads and loads of free pre-packaged stuff for launch at your church. Free. Other non-profits could learn a thing or two from the wacked out dudes at CrazyChurch. Thanks Kevin! Labels: adindustry, nonprofit

a good idea. What if you could choose your charity, like you choose detergent at Walmart? That's the world that GlobalGiving has projected in their new PSA. AdFreak points out what a sweet idea this would be for the big boxers. To actually put boxes devoted to charities on shelves, for customers to buy. There could be an entire department devoted to it. Massively awesome idea. Everyone wins. Let's do it, now. Labels: creativeinspiration, nonprofit, retail

montana: not the best place to get your meth anymore ![]() I always thought that Montana was filled with beautiful mountains, trees and bears. Turns out, that until recently, it was also filled with Meth addicts. That is, until the Montana Meth Project launched their campaign a couple of years ago. Meth use is down substantially. Thanks to their really disturbing print ads, tv spots and a campaign that has you reaching for anti-bacterial gel, the campaign says that meth use has declined 45% and adult Meth use has declined 72%. That's an ad campaign that's done something great. Which means that we can think of Montana for trees and mountains and bears again. Nice work. Labels: ads, nonprofit, youthmarketing

time to be an alarmist ![]() Here's a new twist on a social protest. The flash mob done in a new way. Alarmists. Set your alarm (cell phone, watch, desk clock, whatever) to go off on the 11th day of every month, at 11am. And when your friends look at you as if to say "what a dork - turn that thing off - we're trying to work here," tell them what it's all about. And they'll tell two friends... Or - you could wear a FlavaFav style clock around your neck. One of those old school alarm clocks with the big bells on top. Soon, at 11am on the 11th, we'll all be stopping, and listening to alarms. more data than you can shake a monkey at ![]() Data lovin' monkeys, rejoice. Here's loads, and loads, and loads of free data. I guess you could even say monkey loads of free data. Infochimps.org is a new community built to assemble and interconnect data. They want to built the most gimonkeyous free almanac, with tables of data on every imaginable subject. If you're the type of person who loves to play around with Microsoft Access or Excel, instead of drawing pictures, well this is your lucky day. unscrew america ![]() It's a pretty rare event that conceptual, strategy, copywriting, design, illustration, sound design and flash development all converge to produce something great. Unscrew America is just that type of project. The goal is to inform people about energy-efficient CFLs and LEDs - and also make sure people know that CFLs contain mercury and have to be properly recycled. The incredible online component to the campaign feature beautious Flash animation, video, audio, writing, and everything else. jwt creates giant homeless dude to take your coat ![]() ![]() JWT in New York did a cool thing. They run an annual coat drive, for the homeless. That's a worthwhile cause, and one that any New York worker could relate to. This year, to remind employees and visitors to donate their old coats, artist Julie Rutigliano created a massive installation in one of their lobbies, of a giant homeless dude. A homeless dude so big that he takes up multi-stories, in the JWT multi-storied lobby. A homeless dude so big, he could have starred in Cloverfield. A homeless dude that looks at a glance like...Iggy Pop?? Anyway...this homeless dude also has a wall full of hooks around him - so that people can hang their donated coats. By the end of the drive, JWT had four times as many coats as expected, and the lobby installation was a super coated giant. Nice. Labels: adindustry, newyork, nonprofit

check art is a bore festival ![]() Becky at RMI points out something that's frustrated me for ages. People who make checks suck. Why isn't there more selection? Cooler checks? Great design? Exciting licensing? Not that there's anything at all wrong with Holly Hobbie. Holly Hobbie rocks. There's a nice opportunity for licensing here. And, as Becky discovers, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation has realized the opportunity, and is now selling Breast Cancer checks. Awesome idea - and one that other non-profits could follow. I'm still waiting for punk rock checks - featuring art from Black Flag, Gang of Four, and Minor Threat album covers. Or better yet, Shepard Fairey 'Obey' checks. That would be sweet. But in the meantime, Holly Hobbie rocks.

texas loves the stache. ![]() Media Orchard points to a funny fundraiser. People (I'm guessing mostly guys) are growing mustaches for charity. Cool. They should put up a website, where participants can upload their before, during and after pics. And people should donate more for the crazy stache. via/plaid gets cultured We just started working with the Westport Country Playhouse, as a client, so of course we needed to see what all the fuss was about. Last night, most of the crew checked out "All About Us," starring Cady Huffman, Shuler Hensley and Eartha Kitt. Rowrrrr. She'd kick my ass if she knew I just said that. Surprisingly: + None of our crew got kicked out of the theater + Everyone showed up sober + Nobody brought laptops I was amazed that a theater packed full of people in Westport CT could actually turn off their Blackberries for two hours. Oh yeah - the production was cool. Resulted in lots of deep discussion about the human spirit, life, and stuff we don't normally cover over morning coffee here. highline festival ![]() There's a new arts and music festival happening in New York that sounds pretty cool. High Line Festival will be curated each year by a different artist. This year, David Bowie has the honor. The festival is a ten day mash-up of music, film, comedy, art and performance - selected by David Bowie. The proceeds benefit Friends of the High Line, a non-profit that's helped to get the High Line - an abandoned elevated train track that runs through the meat packing district/Chelsea - approved as a public park. Construction's already begun. The festival runs May 9 - 19, and tickets go on sale in a few days. Separately, is it me, or does Laurie Anderson look just like Hillary Clinton, with a cool haircut? peta launches campaign w/o nudity ![]() Not that there's anything wrong with campaigns featuring nude people....I just never believed that it communicated their message very well. This new campaign hits you over the head with the real message - fur comes from animals. Seems so much more effective in getting to the point. And when Shirley Manson holds up a dead, skinned fox, it gets attention. Yes, it hurts to look, and that's the point. If you're cringing now, you'll probably remember this ad the next time you see a fur coat. And that's an effective campaign. Nicely done.

disclosure over abstinence or fear ![]() Cool new campaign for the San Francisco department of health about the danger of HIV. Unlike previous campaigns that depress and scare, this one takes a different, slightly controversial tactic: disclosure. The campaign's goal is to get guys to discuss their HIV Positive or Negative status before doing it with another guy. Seems like common sense, and is supposedly already happening in the gay community. But it's apparently the first time that a government agency has allowed a message of disclosure to be used as prevention. Smart thinking, and wonderful design communicates the point.
