facebook founder: i need more.

Because we all know that being co-founder of Facebook isn't enough, Chris Hughes has launched another fantabulous company. Jumo.com looks to help people help the world.
Users get matched to causes and organizations based on their skillsets and resources. The tool helps discover people with resources and then match them with the cause that makes the most sense. It sounds like Linked In meets Facebook meets a dream come true for the non-profits and people in need across the globe.
The site doesn't officially launch until this Fall, but in the meantime you can sign up and let Jumo know a little about you. Learn more in the FastCompany profile on Chris.

death wants to play catch with your pets
Here's an ad for Italy's National Animal Protection Institute that illustrates how pets in the pound have a sad, sad, deadline.
Super depressing yet slightly humorous in a death-walking-around-with-a-Frisbee kind of way.

rally the cause changes the world
Our friend @scottyhendo and his friends are up to some awesome goodness.
Their company Cause Shift is producing remarkable, innovating thinking for non-profits. They just launched a new campaign We Can End This, a nationwide campaign to end hunger.
They'll also be facilitating a "Cause Lab", to be kicked off at SXSW in a few days, that will pull together some of the industry's brightest people for brainstorming, strategic thinking and conceptualization on how to best make this happen market by market across the country.
Think you can't make a difference? Here's proof that a handful of people can pull together some of the biggest brands and thinkers in the business to make magic happen.
(Oh - and if you're going to SXSW, bring a can of food with you. Or participate in the Cause Lab, and help make change happen.)
Disclosure: We friended Scott on the PlaidNation tour, he's since become a client, but that doesn't change our opinion that this is revolutionary breakthrough work.

how to show people that drawing is fun

The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum is hosting an event called Draw On, that looks to inspire people from all walks of life to draw.
They've got impressive drawing elite involved with the event, like Maurice Sendak, Peter H Reynolds, and street artist KAWS. Here's the challenge: most adults have been been told for years that "you're not creative." Or that "drawing is for artists. Or kids."
This is exactly the mindset that Draw On! hopes to crush. Anyone can draw, and have fun doing so. Our own Matt Hunsberger produced a site that is entirely drawn. Even down to the sponsor logos. If that wasn't enough drawing, he created the site in mostly black & white, with ample white space, and gave the user a box of drawing tools. Go ahead. Draw all over the site. Have fun. Draw like you haven't drawn since you were 12.
Disclosure: Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum is a client and Matt Hunsberger works for the greatest agency in the land, but that doesn't change the fact that this is awesome work.

let's get naked and cuddle

The Green Thing reminds us that we can help the earth by turning down our thermostats. This weekend is the perfect time to turn that into an opportunity for nakedness with your loved one. Keep each other warm, and save the environment, too.
Green Thing has created a handful of ready-to-send Valentine's day cards that you can send your honey as an invitation to cuddle together for warmth.
Here's the one that I've made for you.

empty house turns into ice house

Detroit has more empty and abandoned real estate than most parts of our country. A photographer and architect are collaborating to bring some additional attention to the issue by turning an empty house into an ice house.
You can watch the video, and then help to support the cause. Another beautiful example of the creative community coming together with their actual communities, and making a difference.

Instead of seeing Avatar for the seventh time, why don't you just donate the price of admission to groups that are helping Haiti?
That's the premise behind Avatar for Haiti, a site that makes it easy to give the price of admission for a matinee, digital 3D, Imax or refreshments to a well deserved cause, instead. Great idea.

the other side of people getting hurt on youtube
YouTubers count on the fact that watching other people getting hurt gets massive views. All fun when it's your own dumbass falling off a ladder, but it's entirely different when the participants are unwilling.
That's the point of this UK campaign that brings the viewer into the role of a cyber bully. The series of spots remind us that there's a person behind the egg on the face. Depressingly guilt ridden.

The Society for Design Administration holds an annual event called Canstruction that gets students and architects to see what they can do with a bunch of cans.
Thirty teams competed this year in NYC, and they raised 100,000 cans of food for City Harvest, a food bank, at the event. 100,000 cans. That's nice.

RED has done an outstanding job getting their brand in front of shoppers just in time for the holiday season. They've installed pop-up stores in London, Tokyo and New York, and then bought aggressive outdoor ads to support them.
The pop-up stores look like awesome representations of the brand, and allow the consumer to see the entire breadth of product that's typically spread across multiple retailers. Smart.

bring some lady gaga love to your gala

Here's proof that non-profit galas don't have to be total borefests. In fact, you can have fun, bring on some sexy action and bring in the money. That's what the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles did. They had the Bolshoi Ballet dancing to a live Lady Gaga performance. Then they auctioned off the costumes - including a Prada Lady Gaga costume, and a Lady Gaga hat designed by architect Frank Gehry.
What they did awesomely:
+ Created a night of entertainment that was on brand to their cause
+ Created a true one-of-a-kind event that couldn't be experienced anywhere else. Anywhere.
+ Produced one-of-a-kind items worthy of auction that are guaranteed to generate megabucks
Can't you do the same for your non-profit? Do we really need another boring gala dinner with your city's Mayor as the star performer? Sure, not everyone can wrangle Lady Gaga, but here's proof that originality, creativity and fun can live in the most gagalicious non-profit galas ever. Give your audience something to tweet about.

we're almost out of carbon

Carbon Danger looks to raise awareness about the growing global warming crisis. There's an interesting perspective presented that puts the level of C02 emissions in the form of a budget. We should only emit 1 trillion tons of C02 between 2000 and 2050 to keep the icebergs out of NYC. With what we've "spent" so far, there's about 760 billion tons left in our budget. At our current burn rate, we're going to run out by 2020. Uh oh.
The site documents the Carbon Danger activities and plans. We just like that they've created a custom plaid pattern symbolizing the battle between fossil fuels and all things green.

save your friends with just your hands

This is a great idea. I have a feeling that I'm not alone in my lack of perceived CPR skills. I took a course 200 years ago, and I vaguely remember something about the importance of rhythm and breathing. Pretty sure that if you were on the ground dying, I might have a hard time remembering the details.
The American Heart Association is doing something about this - with a new Hands-Only CPR technique. The instructions are SIMPLE and easy to remember:
Push hard and fast in the center of the chest.
There's even an iPhone app to help you, if that's too confusing. Hooray for realizing that some kind of CPR is better than no kind of CPR, and that most people don't get to practice or refresh their real CPR skills very often. (And I was never really going to put my mouth on yours, anyway.)

There's also an accompanying video, all of which you'll find more engaging than the 43 pound history book your teacher forced you to read. If only high school could be this easy.

fake ny post paper raises awareness about climate change

The Yes Men, professional pranksters extraordinaire, created their own versions of the NY Post complete with headlines and stories that talk about how climate change could unleash heat waves, flooding, and other disasters over the next decades. Nearly one million copies of the paper were distributed throughout NYC along with a fake website, all to commemorate Climate Week.
According to the Yes Men blog post on the stunt, the 32-page New York Post is a fake, but everything in it is 100% true, with all facts carefully checked by a team of editors and climate change experts. From SJ Boden.

putting the money behind a cause

Aflac is up to something pretty spectacular. (disclosure: Aflac is a client of Plaid.) You're certainly familiar with the fact that the Aflac duck is one of the most recognized brands on earth. But did you also know that they're associated with a giant cause?
The Aflac Cancer Center is an extremely worthwhile cause - and they're doing some pretty cool things on Facebook and the internets that other non-profits and causes could learn from.
Aflac has committed to donating a dollar for every person that joins their cause on Facebook. They're essentially paying you to join their cause. (An easy way for people to get involved and make a difference.)
They've also committed to matching a dollar for every dollar donated. (Incentive for users to give now.)
And they're organizing and spreading the word using the Causes application on Facebook (an application with an impressive history and founders.)
Well done. (and not even our work!)

send this to the teen driver you know
This isn't funny, entertaining or cute. It's a "scared straight" type of PSA geared toward showing the potential effects of texting while driving. It's only a short clip of a 30 minute piece that's shown to students in the UK. It's disturbing.
Once, while on the Plaid Nation tour this year, I counted the number of drivers on a loooong stretch of highway who were NOT texting or talking on their cells. The count rarely got higher than five consecutive "safe" drivers. Not science, just my own informal survey. I never found ten consecutive "safe" drivers.
Bill Green suggests we take it a step further, and create a campaign Ignore It or Turn It Off, (LOVE THIS) and have it funded like the drink responsibly messaging.
Until then, you can send the video edit above to the drivers you know. Especially the ones who love to text.

the difference between actions and results

This twist on the old mental speed bumps in Wisconsin works because it plays on results rather than actions. Most of these signs measure your actions - so that you know you're going 54 in a 25 zone. But that doesn't really tell you why you need to slow down.
This is great conceptual work because it's playing on the age old features/benefits play. Don't tell me that I need to buy your product - tell me instead how I'll benefit from it. Nice twist.

robots and celebrities coming together for goodness

One of the many awesome things that we learned about at SXSW this year was the Social Media SmackDown. (We'll be reporting about even more cool things over the next few days as we finish decompressing/detoxing)
This was launched at the Mashable party during SXSW, with loads of robot fun. Some of our friends from the west coast were pretty deeply involved in putting this together.
This promotion pits celebrity teams together in a contest to raise money for non-profits. We like the idea - because it brings together real celebrities with pretend celebrities (social media experts) for the greater good. We also like that it promotes the charity more aggressively than it does the brands involved - which gives the event more authenticity from a non-profit perspective.
Oh, and anything with a robot theme always rocks. Always.

will you send this link to 100 friends, if i give to charity?

There's some real interesting discussion going on at Brian Morrissey's blog about the Tide promotion that took place earlier this week. A handful of agency type people were asked to come to the P&G offices, and in a true Jerry Lewis style tweetathon, reached out to their networks in an attempt to sell t-shirts. $6 from every $20 t-shirt went to a charity.
You can see all of the tweets, captured with the hashtag #pgdigital.
Sounds pretty cool? They raised about $40 - $50K for a charity. And people were talking about Tide. Not everyone thinks so. Some consider the tactic nice wrapping paper for pay-per-post. It is a little scary to think of our Twitter streams clogged with brands spamming for attention. And donations.
This clearly illustrates that the rules are still being written. That there's no "proven way to use social media" to market your brand - regardless of what the social media "experts" may tell you.
And the one thing that still wins EVERY TIME - is great content. Want to let the the social media masses spread the word? Don't wrap it in charity. Don't pay people to talk about it. Give them something awesome, that they want to share.

Here's a fun stop motion piece made with post its, to remind you to unplug your crap. Because when you don't, you're just sucking unnecessary juice and the post it people will take over. They'll probably kill you in your sleep. Unplug now.

turning factories into light shows

Artists Helen Evans and Heike Hanson are lighting up smoke in Helsinki. The light installation calls attention to emissions during the nighttime, where it might otherwise go unnoticed. Cool.

NASA exploring social media

NASA has a bunch of fun links for you to explore, as they delve into the uncharted worlds of social media. They now have a Flickr site, Facebook presence, uStream feed, and about a kabillion Twitter feeds. Lots of fun content to explore.
As a taxpayer, I would like to demand that they clean up the space station. The space scientist girl pictured above clearly has no problem living in what looks like a messy dorm room. The Flickr photo feed has proven that we've sent a bunch of slobs into space. I say clean it up.

the next big social media opportunity

Want to be the first brand on the next big thing? How about Drew's arm?
If you're the high bidder, Drew Olanoff will tattoo your Twitter username onto his arm. Why not? You know you've spent more ridiculous money on the bosses' son's yearbook advertising. Or his friend of a friend's golf tournament. I say go for it.
Even better - this can come out of your "donations" budget instead of your "advertising" budget - as the winning bidder only needs to make a donation to the Make A Wish Foundation. At time of this publish, the current bid was at $1850. That's still less than the CFO's cousin's charity ball program guide ad that your firm paid for last year. Hurry. Bidding ends at close of business today.

how high is the water, mama?

Sea levels are rising due to climate change. Ever wonder what that means to you?
The Watermarks Project documents what that could mean to the residents of Bristol, England - with light projections of possible water levels. Awesome. From BLDGBLOG.
(Oh - and for uninitiated, the headline to this post references this little ditty.)

how special olympics measures up

A new campaign for the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games hopes to change the perception of the Special Olympics. The print campaign compares the Olympic finish line, ice rink and slalom course to the Special Olympic versions. Nice work.

computer tans are tantastic!

All of the hot people at your office are probably tanning themselves right now. And your pasty, geeky skin could use a little color, too.
Stuck in the middle of winter? Not a problem! Now you can tan from the comfort of your own cubicle. With nothing but your computer monitor. Awesome, fun piece for SKCin.

super niche advertising: brought to your office by hand

This is a super cool concept, with a seemingly cumbersome delivery. To promote Bring Your Kids to Work day, BBDO New York produced acetate sheets with kids scribble on them, and talked security into unlocking 500 offices so they could place them on people's computers in the dark of night.
Workers walked in the next morning thinking that the bosses' brat had vandalized their monitor, and instead see the headline on the piece: “Bring your kids to work day.”

arrrr. a pirate store helps the little scurvy brats

826 Valencia, a group devoted to supporting young students writing skills has produced an awesomely unique and fun fundraising project: A Pirate Store.
Design firm Office helped the group create a line of products that are sold at the group's storefront, in San Francisco and online at the Pirate Supply Store.
A storefront for a non-profit agency? Absolutely. According to an interview in Metropolis Magazine (can't link to it, if they don't put it online), the store creates an additional fundraising channel while creating a connection with the community.
What can you buy at the Pirate Store? Really cool pirate supplies. Like Scurvy Begone, Designer Glass Eyes and Black Beard's Beard Dye. What an awesome inspiration to non-profits, small retail districts and pirates everywhere.

tasty catch of the day

Want to raise awareness about the type of crap people-beasts are leaving all over the beaches of North America? Why not package it up and show them? That's what the Surfrider Foundation did.
Actual trash, packaged all nicely, and placed conveniently into the local farmer's market. From UnderConsideration.

obey puppies

Who doesn't love puppies? Shepard Fairey just proclaimed his love for cute balls of fur with a new series of posters and promotion titled Mutts Like Me.
Inspired by the Obama family adopting a dog, the Obey family has created 400 limited edition puppy prints that will be sold to raise cash for Adopt a Pet. The limited edition prints go on sale some time in January. Thanks, Leigh!
UPDATE/MORE:
Shepard Fairey does a new campaign for Saks Fifth Avenue. Happy Obey Shepard Fairey day.

actors: you have been replaced by toys.
Check out this cool spot for the WWF (the real WWF - the World Wildlife Federation). It's a wonderous juxtaposition of plastic toys and soot put together for your emotional consideration.

Alltop, the ultimate aggregator of just about every website on just about every topic (created by legendary entrepreneur Guy Kawasaki) has now launched a guide for fund raising.
BrandFlakes is featured in a few Alltop categories, so it must be awesome. Seriously - resources for non-profits aren't always easy to come by, so send this to your friend who has to raise a trillion dollars in the tightest year ever.

it's a beautiful day for cancer
Any day that you can laugh at cancer is a fantastic day.
That's what artist and producer Lyrics Born has helped to make a reality. Check out the awesome campaign that illustrates the value of keeping under cover while under the sun. (And just in time for the sun season, down under.)

get naked and huddle together

Here's a cute new video for Do The Green Thing that shows what life might be like if humans were penguins, demonstrating the value of working together.
(Contains some nudity. But in a cute, "let's join together as a human race" way - not in a "let's get naked and party" way.)

peter pan dies if kids don't read
Old man Peter Pan is part of an ad campaign to promote reading - and keeping imagination alive in kids.
Stunningly beautiful art direction, photography and campaign. Although one could argue that there's more imagination magic in a single episode of Yo Gabba Gabba than any chapter of Peter Pan. Not that a book would hurt...just saying.
