hot bands discovered in your lobby

The lines between real estate development and boutique hotel design continue to blur. The latest example of this trend is Ohm, a new stylish rental building in Chelsea that features a lobby with...a stage.
They've partnered with the Knitting Factory to offer regular in-lobby performances for their tenants.

everything you ever wanted to know about jeans

There's a new show at NYU devoted entirely to the history, art and love of denim. Who would have thought that a fabric could be woven so importantly into our pop culture over the last 200 years?
This show takes a deep look at the importance of jeans in our cultural history through photography, mixed media and a pantload of artful contributors.

what to do with empty retail
An amazing organization called No Longer Empty takes unoccupied retail space in New York City and turn them into public art exhibitions.
Their latest effort Never Can Say Goodbye takes over the legendary Tower Records space (a store that used to sell music on discs) and turns it a show featuring over twenty artists, and feels just a little bit like a record store.
Why not do the same thing in your city?

Think fast food restaurants can't blend into the neighborhood? Check out this new Arby's in Brooklyn.
They just opened in a landmark building, and have renovated a space to become "one of the most posh and historic restaurant interiors in the city" according to Brownstoner. Proof that your brand experience can bend a little to fit your audience. Even in fast food.

honey, did you take out the recycling?

The Society for Design Administration holds an annual event called Canstruction that gets students and architects to see what they can do with a bunch of cans.
Thirty teams competed this year in NYC, and they raised 100,000 cans of food for City Harvest, a food bank, at the event. 100,000 cans. That's nice.

target rocks the pop up for the holidays

Target has created a pretty sweet popup event in New York, DC, and San Francisco for this weekend.
Target To Go are micro-Target stores that live for thee days only, and make holiday shopping easier than placing a lunch order on the value meal menu at McDonalds.
Each pop up store features a handful of gifts that you choose by number, and then purchase them pre-wrapped and ready to go. This is a grand idea that spreads fun holiday branding for Target, while generating revenue. (It's not often that your promotional campaign can generate funds to pay for itself.)

gillette bloodies nyc

To promote their Fusion razor, Gillette placed what looked like bloody tissue pieces over the faces of men in other outdoor ads around NYC. Upon closer inspection, the tissue actually reads "Next time, change your blade. Gillette Fusion. Fresh blade, better shave."
The agency actually got permission from the marketers whose ads they tagged, and Gillette paid for some of those media costs. Everyone wins, except the guy who took it on the chin. From Quipsologies.

We haven't read Grant's book yet, but we've met him, read his blog, and can attest that he's one of those really smart people that can put things into unique and interesting perspectives, unlike people with average sized brains.

how to meditate in the middle of nyc

If you went shopping at ABC Home & Carpet over the weekend, you might have experienced a little peace and tranquility in the middle of Union Square.
Sit Down, Rise Up was an effort to raise awareness (and funds) for the Interdependence Project, a non-profit that promotes and educates the public about the benefits of meditation.
The store windows were filled with people meditating in four hour shifts, and drew quite a crowd of onlookers. We could use some of this in big box land on Black Friday.

They've even created a Street Design Manual, so you can turn your place into New York City. (Actually - this is great knowledge worthy of sharing with urban planners across the globe.)

best buy: where art and retail meet?

Last week artist Borna Sammak created an art show at Best Buy.
The plan was to secretly take over all of the monitors on their lower Broadway store in NYC. The artist is known for his renegade installations, and this one went off without police or blue shirt involvement...apparently because Best Buy agreed at some point to let it happen. Win/win for both artist and retailer.
See video of his installation at Animal and an interview with the artist at Art in America.

the best theater you'll see on a boat

If you're in NYC tonight, you may want to check out the last showing of The Confidence Man. According to Gothamist, there's nothing like it, anywhere.
The concept takes place on a decommissioned U.S. Coast Guard vessel docked at Pier 40 and is a take on the Herman Melville’s 1857 novel. The show is an immersive experience that takes place on four levels of the ship. It's impossible to see/experience them all, so you choose which side of the story to experience. You're free to wander the ship as the performance is happening, which lets you explore the story in a unique way. Sounds interestingly awesome.

The photo above was captured by Keith Powell (who has appeared in 30 Rock and Night at the Museum.) See other shots by Drew Barrymore, Sean Lennon, and other actors, dancers, porn stars, architects and photographers.

please stop having sex in front of the window

The Standard Hotel in NYC sits on top of the new High Line Park. The Standard also features rooms that are pretty much all window. And they actively promoted the possibilities that the windows present on their website.
The Gothamist reports that their Facebook page tells fans "We encourage you to exercise your inner exhibitionist," and their website asks, "Whatever you do, just make sure the shots are HOT and that you get them to us in whichever way you can. It's all about sex all the time, and you're our star."
And then families from Ohio became surprised at the live peep shows. Or maybe the highline was becoming too crowded with viewers. Or maybe it was just the NY Post article.
Now the Standard is changing their marketing message. They've cleaned up their website marketing copy, and now warn visitors that their rooms are essentially on display while the curtains are open. (Although the Facebook group still seems pretty sexy.)
Whatever the case, you can bet that the the hotel sex as marketing message has them booked through the end of the year.

walk, smoke and drink just like the madmen

Time Out New York has organized a self guided MadMen walk, so that you can experience NYC from an old ad executive's perspective.
From the bar that everyone celebrated Peggy's writing achievement in, to the hotel where Don crashed while kicked out of the house, you can see, smoke (outside anyway) and drink your way through Manhattan. Of course if you smoke as much as Don Draper, you won't be able walk this at all - so you might want to budget for cab fare.

Retail Design Diva points to a cool new exhibit happening right now at MOMA NYC. An artist took all of the contents from his parent's home in China, and put them on display. Everything.
Over 50 years of stuff, during “wu jin qi yong”, or "waste not", a time when individuals could not amass wealth, but could collect things in reciprocity. (CRAZY.)

a micro niche audience that's totally hot

So the people at Vans are doing something a little different. They've opened a Model Lounge at the Delicatessen Restaurant in NYC.
Here's how it works: Access is limited to female fashion models at invited Top 10 Agencies. They get an all-access card. They get to hang with other beautious types between casting calls, shoots and cigarettes. They get a bunch of cool gifts (and Vans gear) that they could totally afford to buy on their own. They see the entire Vans Girls line.
And just maybe, hot models start wearing the Vans Girls product. And then other girls follow suit. And guys like hot girls that wear Vans. And so they buy more Vans product. Hot girls are happy, guys are frustrated and Vans sells product.
Genius? Weird? Proof that hot people live better than you do? All of the above?

what your brand could learn from a hotel

The new ACE Hotel in NYC is like a textbook of brand awesomeness. NOTCOT has a really delicious pictorial that illustrates how ACE really, really, really understands the brand experience.
It's like they designed everything, and then walked through the entire place and examined every object, thinking "how could this be a part of the brand experience?"
If you are even remotely associated with anything branding, you have to check this out.

pop up stores made easy

Here's a cool new concept in real estate.
Pop up stores and events have been huge in major markets around the world, for some time now. Usually, the agency needs to find empty space and negotiate a short term takeover, and things can get complicated and difficult.
In NYC, that's now a breeze thanks to OpenHouse. They've taken a space that's a clean slate on Mulberry Street and made it available to producers of PopUp events. Just schedule it, dress it, and make it happen. Smart.

street artists against street cops in nyc

This ought to be a lively event. Legendary graffiti artists put together against the cops who arrested them. We're guessing this is all friendly debate, and won't involve billy clubs or spray cans.
If you can't make it to see the live action in DUMBO, rest assured that someone will likely be there with a Flip camera, documenting the fireworks. Sounds action packed.

mannequins taking over nyc

This would be totally awesome if it were a part of the Old Navy campaign. But it's not.
Real estate developers are putting putting mannequins in their new condos, as a way to show what it might be like if people were to buy property. Apparently the real estate market is so bad, and new buildings are so empty, that people need help visualizing what it might be like to have humans living there.

valentines of death: now available at macys

Many NYC residents are already familiar with ghost bikes. The installations memorialize bikers who have lost their lives to the streets of New York, and are seen throughout the city.
Apparently, the person responsible for designing the Valentine display at Macys flagship store was clueless to the memorials. So their "My Funny Valentine" displays look sick and embarrassing. Unless of course, your customers enjoy laughing at dead cyclists.
A hard lesson in why creative teams need to have market familiarity, and a keen understanding of pop culture.
