the difference between facebook, myspace and twitter users ![]() Here's some interesting information about users of Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. Max Freiert has compiled some research showing popular sites that users visited, in addition to the social sites. (He calls them "addicts", without any real background on addiction...I believe he actually means "heavy users.") Max concludes that: + MySpace addicts are somewhat vain – focusing heavily on establishing and fine tuning their online personas by customization of their personal profiles + Facebook addicts focus more on engagement – interacting with applications, music and people both on and off the platform + Twitter addicts are most interested in fostering communication and exploration. Not sure I completely agree with his conclusions, but regardless - this is some cool information. From Johan Bryggare, via Twitter. Labels: facebook, myspace, social media, twitter

marketers: ruining all the fun ![]() Do you completely ignore all of your Facebook notifications, and then delete them 25 at a time? You're not alone. BusinessWeek reports on how marketers are mucking up a good thing by annoying the crap out of you with notifications and applications and stuff that doesn't add to your experience. While the trend is real - I'm not convinced of the BusinessWeek conclusion - that people are leaving social apps, and finding new things. They point to the decline in MySpace usage as proof. Ummm....decline in MySpace usage?? Yeah, and people don't wear acid washed jeans anymore, either. Crowds aren't going to continue migrating to the next new thing, just because of ads. Because the ad agencies will follow. When I am finally in control of the world, two things will happen: 1. Social sites will listen to their users, and create tools that make it easier to ignore, delete and remove the annoying crap. Facebook is already making some strides in this area. I predict more in the future. New social apps should have this built in. 2. Marketers will need to create content that has value. For real. And stop force feeding friend notifications and spamming. So, see you on Facebook. And Seesmic. And Twitter. And Ning. And.... From Wilson Cleveland, via Facebook. Labels: facebook, myspace, social media, trends, web2.0, youthmarketing

ecommerce meets myspace ![]() Skate shoe maker Lakai Limited's commerce page looks just like a MySpace page. While some are definitely annoyed by everything MySpace, I think this is a pretty cool idea. Keep in mind that as a skate culture brand, Lakai will need to continually reinvent themselves online, so it's not like this design concept needs to live for five years. The other thing to consider is that the nostalgia curve shortens dramatically with youth culture. A 20 year old skater who gave up on MySpace three years ago, will look at this design as funny or "nostalgic." Yet familiar. Something to consider for youth marketing brands. I would have made profile pages for each of the sponsored riders too, but otherwise love this concept. Thanks Casey! what if apple embraced social media? ![]() Blogstring has a really interesting post about Apple and social media. Nathan suggests that Apple should start their own Facebook type application. Some really, really good insight here. Not only would such a network be beautious in wonderous Apple splendor, but Nathan points out that Steve Jobs would see some nice benefits too: + They could sell a lot of iTunes + They could lure developers + Integration with the magic iPhone + They could extend their brand farther into the Windows world Really excellent perspective. Mmmmm. Apple. Labels: facebook, mac, myspace, trends, web2.0

the map of social media ![]() Can't find your way around the social media landscape? How about a map? Someone's created a new world map, based on the population of the major social sites. While the maker clearly points out that this is "Not a complete survey. Sizes based on most complete information I could find," wouldn't it be amazing if we could get some programming genius to hook this up and make it real? So that land masses grow or shrink based on available stats? I believe the map has been around for a while, as I couldn't find Twitter or a couple of other newer places. Maybe this is a pre-revolution map. Labels: facebook, myspace, pop culture, social media, web2.0, youthmarketing, youtube

charlies angels in 3.5 minutes. just enough. ![]() Sony Pictures Television has announced that they're releasing 'minisodes' - exclusively on MySpace in June. The minisodes feature classic 70's and 80's TV shows, edited down to 3-5 minutes. Because any longer would be a bore. What a great deal. Great for MySpace. Great for Sony. Great for fans. I'll bet even David Soul is singing. Hello, TVLand? There's this thing called the internet... Labels: myspace, pop culture, television, trends, youthmarketing

All the news that's fit to aggregate and re-brand ![]() Big thumbs up from the PR guy on today's debut of MySpace News. It's MySpace meets Digg meets Google News...only cooler. All of the relevant news of the day from traditional media sites is included right along with punchy blog posts and news catergories that go beyond the traditional NEWS, SPORTS, BUSINESS. Great branding move for MySpace who was in dire need to provide something USEFUL to the world other than being Chris Hanson's cheese in the mousetrap on Dateline's To Catch a Predator. Consider it bookmarked! Labels: myspace, social media, web2.0
