jingle artists get mad competitive

You have probably already seen that the greatest jingle in the history of jingledom was produced earlier this week.

It turns out that Love Jingles isn't the only jingle maker in the jingle industry. Brian King, another jinglemaster wants in on the action. He's challenged Love Jingles to a jingle-off. (That sounds dirty, doesn't it?)

They'll each post a jingle for the Purple Goldfish Project, and the winner will probably have to buy the other jingler a beer. Or gets the jingle crown.

Can't we all just jingle along? (See what you're missing, if you don't pay attention to the internet??)

digital music marketing genius.

Check out the new C-Mon & Kypski video, currently being produced. You can watch the video as it is being produced, ONE FRAME AT A TIME. Even better, you can add yourself to the production (as many times as you'd like) by contributing frames to the video.

Charlie at Curve Detroit points out that any business can learn from this creative feat. C-Mon & Kypski have done a bunch of things right:

+ They appealed to the 90% of the audience who might NOT want to participate because they're too shy, afraid, whatever - these people get to watch the process unfold.
+ They let the visitors that participate in the site become OWNERS of the product. Think they'll talk about it? Share it on Twitter or Facebook? Post about it? You bet.

This is crowdsourcing done smart, done well, and done right. Thanks, Charlie!

ideas win.

OK Go became a household name based on the success of a single video that went viral. And it wasn't a million dollar budget that got Here it Goes Again millions of views. It was a great idea.

Their new video is just as clever. They've taken an age old video effect, "trails" and made it fresh and fun. Once again - not technology, not a kabillion dollar production budget, just a fantastically great idea done well. Woot.

remix your friends

Say goodbye to the rest of your day. Orange has created a wonderous tool that lets you create remixes of songs using your own voice and the sounds produced by your friends.

The Sound of Orange RockCorps lets you sample videos and sounds from your friends, auto tune them to perfection, and then lay them all down on a pre-arranged hit song. Sounds confusing, but if you watch the video, you'll want to spend the rest of your day creating mixes.

The effort helps raise awareness about Rock Corps, Orange's promotion to incentivize volunteerism. Super awesome.

the future of the music business = ad business?

In the old days, developing artists would do everything in their power to get attention from music labels - usually their single chance at success. Now that music labels have imploded and artists are born through advertising, the internet and elsewhere, artists have other opportunities.

Which led the band New Age Dad to create an open proposal for ad agency Crispin, Porter & Bogusky. They detailed the pitch through Twitter and their website, and propose that the agency use their song "the Weekend" in whatever new car commercial that Crispin produces. (That is, as soon as Crispin chooses which car company to work with, now that the VW account is so last year.)

Back in the olden days, people recorded music onto devices not too unlike your iPods of today. Only these devices needed to be played in a larger device, and they could only hold one album or playlist per device. These devices were called cassettes.

Now, you can archive them and enjoy their history (thanks, Joe Snow!) - OR - you can use them to create linear art. Art Backwash shows the entire process for creating Sinatra, pictured above.

how to sell product in the music industry

We try to keep self promotion to a minimum on BrandFlakes, but we've been a part of something that we're super proud of.

We've produced a pre-release site for the new Umphrey's McGee record, Mantis. What's the big deal? Umphrey's are doing something absolutely and totally legendary.

The music business is imploding. Artists and labels for the most part haven't given fans any good reason to buy a compact disc. While the rest of the industry is weeping, suing their fans, and pointing fingers - Umphrey's McGee decided to do something. Mavericky.

If you pre-order their new release Mantis, you'll not only receive the CD - but loads and loads of bonus content. And we're not talking about a free extra track. Alternate studio recordings. Never before released historic recordings. Remixes. Experiments.

Even better - the more fans that buy the release, the more bonus content Umphrey's will unleash. Everyone who buys gets EVERYTHING that's been unlocked on release day. If that weren't enough, the CD will also unlock additional material throughout 2009, when placed in your computer.

So pay attention, music industry...here's how Umphrey's has reinvented the business:
+ They've provided content (a product) that fans can't get or download elsewhere.
+ They've motivated their fans to promote the product, because the more product sold, the better it gets for everyone.
+ They've listened to their fans and created a product, an experience and a place where they want to be.

Results? Sales are through the roof. Fans are raving, complimenting and thanking the band.

So HOORAY for Umphrey's McGee. (And the best creative agency in all of the land that helped make it all possible.)

a picture of punk rock

A friend of mine, C.A. Vanaria has just published a beautiful book documenting the punk and rock scene in Boston, during the heyday of the 80's. The Boston Years 1979-1986 features stunning photography of bands like Anthrax, B-52s, Billy Idol, The Jam, The Shirts, Talking Heads, The Clash, Tom Petty, X, and XTC before any of the 'uncool' people even knew about them.

This is a great trip down memory lane for aging punks, and a wonderful photographic history lesson for those born in the 90's. Her shots are nothing short of historic. You should buy this today.

Now he's created The Filter, a site that helps you identify what music and movies you might like.

This would be cool for picking out movies, I guess. So now when my wife gives me that look like "Are you serious? we're really going to watch Night of the Comet??" I can look back with a straight face and say "What? Peter Gabriel picked it out. He says we'll really like it."

Back in the olden days, there was this thing called a cassette. Essentially, a throw-away mp3 holder. Before mp3's existed. People even sung songs about them. Anyway, people used to use cassettes to make mixtapes for their friends. It was like social networking before social networking or the internet existed. You could share your custom mixtapes for someone's birthday, going away party, or whatever.

packaging saves the day

The special edition of Grand Theft Auto comes with some pretty sweet packaging that even includes a GTA safety deposit box.

And the new NineInchNails release is available in special packaging, too. You can download the release for free - or spend more dough on NIN goodies. This gives a real reason for fans to spend money on something they can't download or trade for free. Sweet packaging. The $300 version even comes packed with a Trent Reznor autograph. Cool.

Who says package design for content is dead??

chrome and fire and lense flares, oh my.

From the band that brought you the groundbreaking music video DANCE, comes a super rockalicious tribute to cheezy motion graphics.

DVNO is a sweet video celebration of chrome, fire, animated neon and everything else you still see on the small-time news channel intros. Awesome reminder of yesterday.

what to do with your old records.

In the olden days, before the system of wires and tubes that we call the internet existed, people saved their music to large vinyl discs. Cooler people even called it 'wax." And instead of iPods, they carried these disks around in milk crates. The problem is, many old people have basements and closets full of these black discs, and have nothing to do with them. What to do? Put the old people to sleep? Or find a safe place to put the black plastic discs?

Artist Carlos Aires has found a solution. Laser cut (I assume) art made from old records. I sooo want many of these. Found on NOTCOT.

find, embed, link all of your favorite music.

Check out this amazing music search engine, SeeqPod. Search for just about any song in the world, and listen to it immediately. Get the song's lyrics, the artist's MySpace page, tour dates, and even embed it into your blog. Setup a playlist, and share it. Pretty cool.

I've chosen to embed your favorite Rick Astley song above, because I know how much you love to rock out on a Wednesday morning.

Found through Jesse Kanner, via Facebook
