history of browser marketshare, made pretty

Weren't you just looking for a beautiful graphic that would illustrate the history of browser usage since 2002? Here you go.
And ironically, if you squint at the graphic, it looks a lot like the Firefox logo. From @charliecurve

microsoft stores: kind of like eating at chilis
So Microsoft has stores now. Don't feel sorry for them because their stores look like carbon copies of the Apple store. Or because of their fragmented marketing campaign.
Feel sorry for them because some employees in this store were forced to participate in this most uncomfortable "spontaneous" moment.
Now buying a PC can be almost as much fun as your birthday at Chilis. (Sorry Chilis - I really do love your chicken tacos.)

windows does something right

Amazing. Miraculous. Windows actually launched an interactive campaign that makes sense. Brian Morrissey writes about the Windows Facebook page that launched the other day.
They've even included a content aggregator within the page that pulls feeds from all of the other social media properties like Twitter, blogs and YouTube, and shares what people are saying about the product. Windows. Working. Wow.

dude, you're in my space

Alan Rapp over at Design Observer riffs brilliantly about the origin of "personal space." The concept was coined by Robert Sommer in the 1969 book Personal Space: The Behavioral Basis of Design and influenced everything from hospital layouts to abortion-picketing laws. Sommer has largely been forgotten, but his idea of different spatial bubbles having different uses was debated at SXSW this spring as the reason why consumers like text messages on cell phones but not on giant flat-panel TVs.
Don't tell Microsoft, though. We hear they're still working on a convergence device.

windows users: another 5 years of crappy email?

There's a new version of Outlook 2010 coming out, and it seems that a lot of Windows users are worried that they're going to be stuck with a few years of crappy looking, broken email. Rather than giving up and switching to Macs, they're doing something about it.
The Outlook revolutionaries have created Outlook’s broken—Let’s fix it, a site devoted to raising awareness about the problem and attempting to get Microsoft to do something about it. They're asking all Outlook users to join the revolution. It's easy - you only have click on the button that says "have your say now." Thanks, Justus!

the history of the internet
Microsoft has released a new version of that browser they make - Internet Explorer version 8. To get everyone all pumped up, they've produced this cute video about the history of the internet. Fun.

microsoft surface, in the wild

Now you don't have to be Wolf Blitzer to play around with Microsoft Surface. You only need to go to Vegas. Rio Hotel and Casino has installed Microsoft Surface tables at their iBar. It's a reason to visit sin city that won't cost you quarters. Or dollars. Or fifties, depending on how you roll.

songs reworked with the help of microsoft songsmith
If you're bored today, and haven't already seen the Microsoft Songsmith videos, here's a treat. There's a new Microsoft application that lets you sing vocals, and then it automatically creates a music soundtrack for you.
Some people have taken existing vocal tracks to see what kind of music Microsoft Songsmith might come up with. As you might expect, hilarity ensues. (Thanks, Eliza!)

microsoft: our fashion is cooler than our operating system

As a part of the new Crispin, Porter & Bogusky campaign for Microsoft, they're producing apparel. T-shirts. Like old school, looks-like-vintage designs. The line is called "Softwear by Microsoft" and hits select stores on December 15.
It's possible that some snarky Microsoft non-lovers might sport these, in true ironic style. And then the brand becomes just .05% cooler to those that see it. Proof that changing brand perception is a long haul, and that you need to do more than ads.
I like:
+ That Crispin is thinking beyond the obvious brand campaigns.
I'm confused:
+ T-shirts? Will it make your computer actually work, or easier to use?

how to reach the rockers in their cubes

Where are all of the AC/DC fans now? Probably working in cubicles across the corporate land. So how do you share the new AC/DC video with them, when their evil IT departments have blocked access to YouTube?
Create the music video in Excel. Really. You can download an Excel file, right? Genius.

photo sharing made pretty

Mashable reports on a brand new photo sharing site - Bragosphere. Tools like Flickr and Photobucket are pretty entrenched, so it will be interesting to see if this gets traction.
If you look past the fact that it requires the Microsoft Silverlight plugin, this looks to be a cool feature rich application. Users can drag, drop and enlarge photos outside the grids you've become accustomed to on the other photo sites. That makes for a nice, friendly viewing experience. Worthy of exploration.

microsoft brings fun to the conference room.

On his last CEO Summit, Bill Gates debuted the touch wall. Basically, it's Microsoft Surface, installed vertically. Your conference room dreams of this. Your living room dreams of this. Retail stores dream of this.
Finally, something cool from Microsoft, that you really want. But can't afford.

how is microsoft still in business?
It is absolutely astounding that this exists. That money was spent on this. That people approved it. I know the money must flow out of faucets over there, but couldn't you hire a better conceptual team for this?
At first, you'll think it's bad on purpose, and all a part of the joke. But as you get about halfway through, you realize there's no punch line. It's real. Real embarrassing. Reboot, please.
