awesomeness for your walls

LTL Prints has just created something pretty awesome. Giant wacky packages (younger folk might not remember that these were the Pokemon cards of the 1970's) that you can apply to your walls. They've made a deal with Topps and created a product that's an instant piece of art, conversation starter or homage to pop culturism.

Even better - the decals are removable and can be re-applied up to 100 times, which means even in you have a jerk of a landlord who won't let you customize your joint, you're in luck. I'm sure this is only the start to a licensed wall graphics empire.

coworking space can look hot, too

Check out this coworking space in Dallas, Texas. Cohabitat is an excellent example of two things:

1. Coworking space can be as unique and as engaging as the population that it serves,
2. You can turn former residential space into original, cool workspace.

Nice joint.

burger king in the near future

Burger King is planning a massive overhaul of 12,000 locations worldwide. According to the pics on MSNBC, they're going to be styled in a futuristic way. (That is, if in the future everything is red, white and plastic.)

Let's hope there's free internet on those magical red computer monitors.

lonny: the new domino

Fans of the now defunct Domino Magazine can rejoice in a publishing celebration that it's been brought back to life. Kind of. A former editor of the now dead publication has launched Lonny (that's what happens when you combine London and New York).

What's cool about Lonny is that it's an online only publication that reads like its old school paper friend. It feels foreign (and maybe annoying) at first, but once you accept the navigation it's not so bad. Even better, they've linked most of the products featured in the publication's pages to online sellers. That's a boon to readers and marketers.

who says that slat wall has to be boring?

Slat wall. That retail interior design invention from the 1980's that plagues the ugliest retail environments across the world. Until now. Check out what Strukt Design Studio created for a space in Vienna. Wow.

bending space with paint

You've seen pics of the unique space painting tricks that cause optical illusions (and probably headaches) for the people who view them - but now there's a video showing the process and results in action.

Pretty awesome. From A Million Monkeys Typing.

this couch would look awesome in your apartment

Here's a smart campaign for Ikea that puts a couch in front of a billboard. The background changes every few seconds, perfectly illustrating how great this white couch looks in any environment. (Until of course, you eat chocolate and don't notice that a piece dropped on the couch and then you smear it in with your pants. Not that that's ever happened or anything...)

don't forget the elevator

Your lobby looks awesome. Your conference room kicks ass. Your workspace is inspiring. What about...your elevator? This is one part of the workplace that's often overlooked - mostly because companies with elevators usually share the building with other firms.

This elevator in Antwerp features the work of Darrin Umboh. If you also own your elevator space - does it reflect your brand?

(But really, you should do your lift like the Haunted Mansion elevator.)

AS COOL AS A FLEX? If it is, Lifehacker wants to see it. Just check out their Flickr page and add yours. But please, tidy up first before shooing. Or not.

what to do with that big jar of pennies

Maybe you've thought about staying at the Standard Hotel, but now there's a reason to eat there, too. The Standard Grill, inside the Standard Hotel, has a floor made from pennies. Finally, our currency system being put to a good use.

decorate your house with a sharpie

Here's how you decorate a room with just $10 of Sharpie. Let's hope that Sharpie is sponsoring this guy to travel around and do events, and decorate their trade show booth live...such a cool opportunity.

(Side note: Like the Xplane blog? We're visiting their headquarters on the PlaidNation tour starting in just 25 days!)

whiteboard anywhere

This is one of the best product inventions that we've seen in a long time. Paint that turns anything you want into a whiteboard. So you can go crazy with markers and draw flow charts and diagrams or write grocery lists on any wall you want. Entire walls. Ceilings. Anything that you can paint with the magic Tabrasa Idea Paint.

Visitors to NeoCon in Chicago this week (a big deal if you're a decorator or architect) will be treated to artist Phil Lubliner illustrating live at their booth in the show. Here's what's fun: whatever you tweet - he draws. Want him to draw "We (heart) Brand Flakes for Breakfast?" No problem. Just tweet it to @mdctabrasa and add the hashtag #mdctabrasa to the end of your tweet. My guess is that he won't draw phallic symbols or naked people, but you could give it a shot.

This is a product with cool opportunities. I want a brainstorm room that's painted from floor to ceiling in it. What about interactive public spaces? Let's paint the town white. Wait...that doesn't sound right...let's paint the town with ideas.

carpet that you don't wipe your feet on

Some people just breathe creative awesomeness. Like every little thing they do or try is filled with wonder. Mark Mothersbaugh is one of those dudes.

You probably know him as a member of the best band in jumpsuits - Devo. You may also know that he has produced countless kidriffic soundtracks to television shows. He's written books, and hosts a drawing segment on Yo Gabba Gabba.

And, because that wasn't enough...he's designing carpet. Not just squares and shapes, but the most "whoah, check out that rug" kind of carpet.

change begins at home

The Oval Office is being re-decorated. And if Ikea has it's way, it's going to be Swedish-mod-ultra-hot. The Ikea version of the Oval Office is now on display at Union Station in Washington DC. You can snap a photo of yourself behind the President's new put-it-together-yourself desk.

If you don't like the version above - don't worry. This is a participatory nation. And you can now decorate the Oval Office any way you like. From Adrants.

Where we do what we do is an awesome collection of workspaces. Wonderfully designed workspaces. Horribly messy workspaces. And everything in between.

You can submit shots of your own place, or just browse around other people's joints. Found at Coudal Partners.

where they get all of the furniture on madmen

The latest issue of Interior Design has an interview with Amy Wells, the designer of the MadMen set. Amy shares where she shops, what's custom and why the set isn't filled with foofy foof expensive mid-century modern designer pieces.

What they didn't ask her: do you come home smelling like smoke??
Thanks, Michele!

color on the walls

Here's a nice project for your house. A project that's not done when the wallpaper is hung. A project that your friends and guests can enjoy every time they visit.

Wallpaper that you color in yourself could be a load of fun in the right room. Of course, when it's all colored in, you're kind of stuck with it. Or maybe you could just add another layer...

people in detroit get bizarre

Charlie from Curve tells us that their agency got to check out a behind the scenes tour of Theatre Bizarre! - the most hellacious looking Halloween type event ever. Reason to consider a move to Michigan. Or at least going there for a visit.

Check out the QuickTime VR tour, too. Definitely one of the killerest environmental designs ever. Thanks Charlie!

blog while you lay a log

At first, it seemed like this might be a 'blog from the bathroom' event. Maybe you thought "hooray, that's the one place I don't usually get to blog from" but upon closer inspection, it appears that the Bathroom Blogfest is actually blogging ABOUT bathrooms.

It's true that bathrooms are often forgotten about, in need of attention, and not thought of as relating to the customer experience. But of course they do. Career consultants have been telling interview candidates to visit potential employer bathrooms for years. A bathroom will tell you lots about a workplace, a retailer or a restaurant.

Who knew there was a bathroom meme? The event kicks off Sunday, in bathrooms across the globe. Feel free to share your best, the worst or the scariest customer bathroom experiences. Or just sit on the pot and watch. From Christine, via Facebook.

meeting rooms, 2.0 style

The boutique hotel concept has finally arrived in the event planning industry. Meet at the Apartment is a new concept in corporate meeting space. Highly designed, ultra cool, uber hip meeting space that you rent on an as needed basis.

Awesome for brainstorms, client meetings in NYC when your office is in Toldeo, or a fun off-site location. But they don't come cheap.

These aren't likely to replace the "let's meet at Starbucks" crowd, at a flat rate of $5,000 to $10,000 per day. Yes, this includes staffing (concierge, server and on-call A/V tech), audio-visual components, meeting facilitation supplies and unlimited beverages and snacks. Mmmmm. Awesome idea for a small conference or series of meetings. From Springwise.

ladies night at best buy

BestBuy realizes that Blue and Yellow tests poorly with girls. And girls don't find their stores attractive. So they've pulled together 40 random BestBuy customers to help them redecorate. They're apparently going to incorporate sklylights and earthtones.

So...they're letting their customers redesign their stores? Not a retail design professional? So people who likely live in poorly styled houses and have no retail or merchandising design experience are going to help...redecorate retail? Awesome. Can't wait for the recliners with cupholders, and the curtains with ducks and cows on them.

cooler than any cubicle wall

If your workplace can't handle the whole open office trend, the least you could do is close things up in an interesting way. This computer wall is the most awesome wall ever. On both sides. How many power strips do you think they need to turn this thing on?

wallpaper. not just for people living in the 70's anymore.

Check out this sweet collection of limited edition wallpaper. Actually, calling it wallpaper would be an insult. Limited edition art prints, suitable for pasting onto your walls.

Exposif is a collection of wallpapers, developed by Maxalot in collaboration with leading names in graphic design, photography and illustration. Nice.

nice pipes.

Light pipes. Pipes that light up. They're not really too good for plumbing. Or pumping industrial waste through your space. But they look really cool lit up. And at only about half the price of actual nuclear glowing pipes.

surprise your wife and redecorate the living room

You know that she's totally going to love these Mario Bros and Donkey Kong wall decals. Don't even ask. Just take down all that Restoration Hardware crap, and put these stickers up. And then proclaim that you plan on redecorating the entire house, with each room devoted to another video game.

Don't forget to remind her that you once held the record for Donkey Kong at the machine in the snack bar, in college. From urlgreyhot.

design is dead. we can all go home now.

After making 364 kabillion dollars on design, Philippe Starck says design is dead and that he's retiring. He claims that “I was a producer of materiality and I am ashamed of this fact.”

How ashamed, Philippe? Then why don't you give everything back? Come live in my house, and I'll live in one of yours. Ok?

Design Miami is coming to New York. So, we can only assume that everything else "Miami-style" will be acceptable for the month of March.

Design Miami has become the most awesome display of stuff you can't afford. And stuff that would look ridiculous in your apartment. And stuff that's completely inspirational. And now it's coming to New York.

In somewhat old news, the New York Times reports that Ian Schrager and the Marriott chain are teaming up together to make cool places to stay.

More current, Where's the Sausage does an awesome analysis of why this is great. I agree. Meanwhile, I'm sure Paris is at a party somewhere. Or in a limo, showing her cootchie to someone. To spread the Hilton brand.

hotel tomo. not like the hotels we saw on tour.

While on tour this summer, we experienced some of the crustiest, skankiest, most unsightly motels. That's the breaks when you're a small firm paying for almost 100 room nights.

But here's what we should have had. Hotel Tomo, in San Francisco. It's a BEST WESTERN. Which of course begs the question - should style really cost extra?

Thanks Eliza!
