friends help a friend tag a building across the street
Tony Quan, a recently paralyzed graffiti writer, has some pretty awesome friends. They hooked up a device that lets him tag the wall outside his window, while only using the movement of his eyes. Geek friends rock.

it’s like Life For Dummies

How to describe cockeyed.com, hmmm. Billed as the sixth or seventh-best website in the world, it’s as if David Lynch was the editor of Popular Mechanics with a little MythBusters thrown in for fun. Every post by the creator Rob Cockerham is either info on or a test of odd but normal things you would never think you needed to know. Moving overseas? Then you need a shipping container. Perhaps you want to see Incredible Stuff He Made. Yes, you do actually. Or the one I saw today which reminded me of Plaid fun on America’s highways: How To Stop Rubbernecking. Enjoy!

print lives! 24 hours at a time

The problem with magazines? They don’t print fast enough. 24 Hours was conceived, produced and printed in 24 hours. Not sure every magazine could do this but it is an interesting experiment that adds life to a category—magazines—that sure needs it right about now. Pre-order a copy. Ironically, it doesn’t solve the other age-old problem: Delivery will take a lot longer than 24 hours. (Via Coolhunting.)

the big o.

Ian Fitzpatrick has created something beautiful: Optimist Conspectus. What may sound like a psychology experiment is actually a wonderful collection of statements that answer the question: What are you optimistic about?
Let's face it. Our industry could use a little optimism. There's certainly enough hate and anger. Perhaps some positive energy would do everyone some good.
Feeling down? Check it out. Feeling awesome? Tell the world why. It's time that you give just a little bit of love to the wonderful, fantastical big O. (Optimism, of course.)

what you can learn from a rented dvd
Chris Brogan writes about how he was inspired after watching the special features portion of the Iron Man DVD. He sums up how success can be reached by achieving three layers: vision, creation and execution.
He's onto something. Every successful director needs to communicate his vision to hundreds (if not thousands) of people involved in the production process. And if that process is going to work, then the creation and execution have to be aligned with his/her vision. Not an easy feat.
There's a great lesson here for any leader of any organization, team, or brand, large or small. Check out Chris' post, and the enlightening discussion in the comments over at his blog.

send some art students to india, to do real work

Our former intern Parker is out making the world a better place. Not content with staying in her comfy dorm and living on Facebook like most college students, Parker is planning a quest to India.
As a school project, they created an information design system to help communities in India understand the basics and importance of clean water. Now they actually want to go to India, implement the campaign and drill a well. Or something like that.
I'm all for college students getting their hands dirty and appreciating the slacker keyboarding jobs they'll enjoy after graduation. But it costs big money to send students to India. So Parker needs your help. Make a donation of $10 trillion dollars. Or whatever you might be able to afford. (BE SURE to choose the "other gift destination" in the giving form, and indicate that it be allocated to VCD India Project).
In the process, you'll be helping a community in India, and getting some art students dirty and tired. Always good.

company wikis: document culture for employees past and present.

Ann Handley from Marketing Profs has a beautious blog post about some of the fantastic stuff that happens in life, that many of us take for granted. But that's not even the great part.
As in most of Ann's posts - the community is deep and the comments are insightful. There's a treasure in one particular comment from Mike Volpe at HubSpot. (Go here - and scroll down to his comment.)
Mike works in a company where they value their culture and work environment. They have fun goofing on and pranking their coworkers. (One prank even has it's own website, for germaphobe Jonah.) And they've setup a private COMPANY WIKI to document the company's culture.
This is GENIUS. Forget employee manuals. What new employees really need to know are the inside jokes, the internal lingo, and the history behind these important items. Like at our firm - why the corner bodega is called "triple B" instead of it's given name. Or where the Harry Dick building is (pictured above). Or the trillion other little things that make up a company's culture.
A wiki will also serve as a historical reference for those that have left the company. Wouldn't you love to have that for some of the places in your past?
Awesome goodness from a wonderful post. Thanks, Ann and Mike!

pr students: everything you need to know

Twitter buddy Brad Ward is speaking to a bunch of college PR students. So naturally, he sent a tweet asking:
"HEY!!!! If you had 133 characters to tell a class of PR college students something, what would it be? Tag it #jr342. Thanks!! And retweet."
The results are pretty amazing. Tweets from across the globe came in within a matter of hours, with wise advice that couldn't possibly be duplicated in any textbook, professor's lecture or general internet search. Students: bookmark this, and refer back to it, often.

the store for tomorrow

Wolff Olins has created a cool project in London and New York titled BrandNext. The show takes place at The Store for Tomorrow which explores the idea of brands as platforms for action, and inspiring people do more and do better.
An exhibit where the people attending are a part of the show. The New York 'store' opens later this week. From Brand New.

vbs tv really rocks

If you haven't checked out VBS.tv yet, you should kill some otherwise productive time today. Led by Creative Director Spike Jonze, they've really built a wonderful dashboard of content, and some awesome films. I got hooked on the North Korea episodes this weekend. Once you start watching, you won't stop. Thanks Devon!

signs, signs, everywhere are signs.

Eye Candy points to a sweet Flickr pool of sign photos. Signs can tell you so much about the culture and the times of their creation. One of my all-time favorite things to photograph, and view. This Flickr set is awesome.

Two great tastes that taste great together!
Looking for inspiration? Open the fridge.I'm a foodie, and to me one of the best things about cooking is the endless variety of dishes that can be created from a basic vocabulary of ingredients. Inventive food pairings, where two iconic tastes are brought together to create something totally original and delicious, is the highest form of this art. A perfect example is the chocolate and peanut butter combination we know and love. But today, I want to blow your mind with: bacon popcorn.
I recommend the folks at Slashfood for a daily dose of recipes and ideas that challenge our assumptions about what goes with what. Go for the inspiration, stay for the food porn!
