how to share your reel. ![]() While researching interesting brands and people that we'd like to meet on the Plaid Summer Tour, coworker Sara found Laika. A super cool animation and production facility in Oregon. Their work is stunning - but that's not the only thing you should check out. Their site allows you to view their reels - and put together your own reel of their work, in any order you'd like. And then share it with friends. They've thought hard about their audience - agencies and people who hire animators - and understand that there are several people that are a part of that decision making process. By allowing the sharing of a custom reel, everyone in on the decision can see the same work. Awesome work. Awesome marketing. Totally, completely awesome. AND - I discovered that they produced the new spots for Soy Joy - which rock, btw. See the spot in my custom Laika reel. Labels: 3d, adindustry, ads, Flash, illustration, video

vintage skateboard stickers for your briefcase ![]() Someday there will be a massive museum erected to showcase the culture and history of skateboarding. For now, there's Retro Skate Stickers. A super sweet collection of vintage skateboard stickers. I was totally stoked to see my buddy Per Welinder represented (above). Awesome. Found on Hip.Young.Thing. desktops are back ![]() Desktoptopia has released a product that feeds desktops to your computer. You can rate them, and it learns what you like, and continues to feed your desires. And there's a kabillion beautiful, cool and fun images. Hal Thomas, VP of Marketing at Desktopia, says they're open to including brand-styled desktops, too. Not the trashy stuff - but think entertainment properties, lifestyle brands, and things people would actually like on their desktops. I'm intrigued, because desktops have largely been ignored for the last few years. Not long ago, it was presented as the future of communication. What elements exist within your brands, that people might want on their desktops? Labels: branding, illustration, photography, technology

what the pope is doing for fun this weekend If you're looking for a reason to stay indoors this weekend, (and live in the northeast,) here you go: New York Comic Con. A festival of geekiness about comics, graphic novels, anime, manga, video games, toys, movies, television and other nerdy gems. A handful of the dorks from our agency will be there, so keep an eye out for us. If you're too cool for this level of geekdom, then we'll do our best to give you the highlights here on BrandFlakes. Or on Twitter. Or Flickr. (We hang with geeks, so you don't have to.) Labels: anime, illustration, japan, newyork, pop culture, tv

what kids read before the internet ![]() The NY Times has a gallery of all of the Mad Magazine fold ins. Fold ins were interactive entertainment before the internets. Readers see a folded out version, that would include a question, and some imagery related to the topic. When folded in, the page would reveal another illustration entirely - revealing the "answer" to the question. Great, creative stuff from the time before computers and Flash animation. Found by Mave Gibson, via Facebook. (Damn Mave, you find the best stuff!) Labels: creativeinspiration, illustration, politics, pop culture

your life is a comic ![]() Put all of your work aside today. Here's something fun that you can do instead. Re-create that stupid scene with you and your co-worker from yesterday, only this time, you get to put your own words in his mouth. And you can give him a bald head and big nose. Bitstrips lets you create your own comics. You can use the existing library of characters - or create your own. Add yourself and your friends to your scenes. This is an awesome tool, with loads of possibilities - not all of which are unproductive. What about a slide for that PowerPoint presentation, featuring your boss as a character? don't you wish your moleskine looked like this? ![]() Mike Rohde took some really good notes, while at SXSW. Yes, he captured the most salient points of the panels he attended. But unlike you or I, he managed to beautifully illustrate them. These super glorious notes weren't done after-the-fact. This was done LIVE, during the panels, sometimes even in the front of the room, on a huge sketch pad, for all to see. I watched them myself during at least one of the panels. And now you can enjoy them all, in his Flickr photoset. Amazing. You should invite him to your next event's keynote, and then give limited edition prints of his notes to all of the attendees. While at SXSW, we met John Unger, who among other things, has created Emoodicons - the the first ever mood ring/emoticon mashup. One of those "wish I thought of it" ideas. unscrew america ![]() It's a pretty rare event that conceptual, strategy, copywriting, design, illustration, sound design and flash development all converge to produce something great. Unscrew America is just that type of project. The goal is to inform people about energy-efficient CFLs and LEDs - and also make sure people know that CFLs contain mercury and have to be properly recycled. The incredible online component to the campaign feature beautious Flash animation, video, audio, writing, and everything else. Boom Design Group and their sister company Fluid did the Flash and sound design and video. There's also print ads and even a tv component, which includes a role for Paul Reubens. Can't wait to see that. Nice campaign, by GSD&M. Nice job!! Labels: ads, copywriting, creativeinspiration, Flash, illustration, nonprofit

It's released on line - and dependent on your preference, you can download a PDF (and even print it, if you hate trees), download a 30 minute audio podcast, or a 5 minute video podcast. Or download all three and dedicate your day to Bones Magazine. This issue is chocked full of really cool photography, illustration, art and inspiration. Enjoy. Stuffy corporate types might not dig this - so just move along...nothing to see here. Found on MWM News Blog. Labels: creativeinspiration, illustration, photography, podcasting, video

how politicians waste our money ![]() (Well, this is only one way.) The most ridiculous ad spend ever. C'mon. Puhleeze. And let's just pretend that the cause is worthwhile (which it isn't), why do politicians always pay for youth oriented creative that looks like it was produced by grandparents? "Don't be lame..elevate your game?" Right. Ok. If the headline wasn't bad enough, they also asked grandpa for a totally awesome youth-connecting illustration. "And let's put the city skyline in the background. Kids really like that." It's urban. Go Texas. Labels: ads, illustration, youthmarketing

introducing the world's longest, scrolling, visual website. even much, much longer than this terribly super long headline. ![]() At visuals of the world, you can scroll on forever and enjoy social design goodness in the process. Users can submit their own artwork, and have it added to the bottom of the ever going page. At first I thought "lame." japanese nerd cars ![]() What started as a comic nerd trend is beginning to cross over to more mainstream audiences in Japan. Or at least to the cooler geeks. Otaku (aka "geeks") are rollin' with stickered cars and custom comic inspired interiors. The cars are called "itasha", supposedly chosen because the word sounds similar to "italian." Got a mini-van? Customize it with Sailor Moon stickers. That would rock. Don't even ask your wife. Just do it. Labels: anime, automotive, illustration, pop culture, trends, youthmarketing

sharpie marker tattoos rock ![]() Not ready for the real thing? How about a Sharpie Marker tattoo? What a cool promotional event idea. Have artists give sweet marker tattoos at your trade show booth. This is a MASSIVE opportunity for the brand, if they're not already on it. Fun with markers could sell a lot of product. Labels: art, illustration, youthmarketing
