how to show people that drawing is fun

The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum is hosting an event called Draw On, that looks to inspire people from all walks of life to draw.
They've got impressive drawing elite involved with the event, like Maurice Sendak, Peter H Reynolds, and street artist KAWS. Here's the challenge: most adults have been been told for years that "you're not creative." Or that "drawing is for artists. Or kids."
This is exactly the mindset that Draw On! hopes to crush. Anyone can draw, and have fun doing so. Our own Matt Hunsberger produced a site that is entirely drawn. Even down to the sponsor logos. If that wasn't enough drawing, he created the site in mostly black & white, with ample white space, and gave the user a box of drawing tools. Go ahead. Draw all over the site. Have fun. Draw like you haven't drawn since you were 12.
Disclosure: Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum is a client and Matt Hunsberger works for the greatest agency in the land, but that doesn't change the fact that this is awesome work.

sometimes you have to think dirty

You can be sure that the graphic designer who put this ad together for a Junior Jazz Dance event had only the best intentions. And they needed a couple of illustrations to represent dancers. The only problem of course, is that the rest of us see: boobies.
Sometimes it pays to think like a frat boy, and look for boobies and sex in everything you do. Just call it proofreading, and you won't feel so bad.

if world of warcraft were cute...

What if you pulled together some really cool illustrators and creative people to produce a social game that was like World of Warcraft, but friendly, creative and cute? Without all of the swordfights?
Check out Glitch. The latest and most awesomest MMO, created by one of the founders of Flickr. It's not live just yet, but you can read all about the details in CNET.

some things are better on paper

Let's say that you're really into parkour - but you're not really limber or fit enough to bound across buildings, somersault over cars and generally jump around the neighborhood. What's a parkour wannabe to do?

cool way to promote illustration

It's a challenge for photographers and illustrators to keep top of mind awareness with Art Directors and Designers. Usually, they create email lists, and send new work on a periodic basis.
Craig Frazier has found a unique way of capturing the attention of creative people. Drawords features drawings by the illustrator, without captions. They're mostly scenarios that are begging for captions, and that's where you come in.
The result is an entertaining site of illustrations with copy that's written by the crowd. He's created a reason to return to the site on a regular basis by creating something of value. And Art Directors, Designers and Copywriters are filling in the blanks, all while Craig Frazier maintains top of mind awareness. Smart.

If you're in NYC tomorrow or over the next couple of weeks, you'll have to check out the Sendak in SoHo exhibit at the Animazing Gallery. Billed as the world’s largest exhibition (& sale!) of original illustrations and etchings from the collection of artist and author Maurice Sendak, this is a must visit event!
There will be over 200 pieces on display, and if you make the opening tomorrow you'll even get to see Mr. Sendak receive a Lifetime Achievement award. Thanks, Deb!

what you can do with your old cassettes

Back in the olden days, people recorded music onto devices not too unlike your iPods of today. Only these devices needed to be played in a larger device, and they could only hold one album or playlist per device. These devices were called cassettes.
Now, you can archive them and enjoy their history (thanks, Joe Snow!) - OR - you can use them to create linear art. Art Backwash shows the entire process for creating Sinatra, pictured above.

stones logo finally sells for what it's worth

John Pasche sketched what would become the legendary Rolling Stones logo while in art school, back in 1970. That sketch just sold at auction for around £50,000. That's like 600 kabillion U.S. dollars. Yet still about half what the logo would cost for Paula Scher to design today.

how to share your reel.

While researching interesting brands and people that we'd like to meet on the Plaid Summer Tour, coworker Sara found Laika. A super cool animation and production facility in Oregon.
Their work is stunning - but that's not the only thing you should check out. Their site allows you to view their reels - and put together your own reel of their work, in any order you'd like. And then share it with friends.
They've thought hard about their audience - agencies and people who hire animators - and understand that there are several people that are a part of that decision making process. By allowing the sharing of a custom reel, everyone in on the decision can see the same work. Awesome work. Awesome marketing. Totally, completely awesome.
AND - I discovered that they produced the new spots for Soy Joy - which rock, btw. See the spot in my custom Laika reel.

desktops are back

Desktoptopia has released a product that feeds desktops to your computer. You can rate them, and it learns what you like, and continues to feed your desires. And there's a kabillion beautiful, cool and fun images.
Hal Thomas, VP of Marketing at Desktopia, says they're open to including brand-styled desktops, too. Not the trashy stuff - but think entertainment properties, lifestyle brands, and things people would actually like on their desktops.
I'm intrigued, because desktops have largely been ignored for the last few years. Not long ago, it was presented as the future of communication.
What elements exist within your brands, that people might want on their desktops?

what kids read before the internet

The NY Times has a gallery of all of the Mad Magazine fold ins. Fold ins were interactive entertainment before the internets.
Readers see a folded out version, that would include a question, and some imagery related to the topic. When folded in, the page would reveal another illustration entirely - revealing the "answer" to the question.

your life is a comic

Put all of your work aside today. Here's something fun that you can do instead. Re-create that stupid scene with you and your co-worker from yesterday, only this time, you get to put your own words in his mouth. And you can give him a bald head and big nose.
Bitstrips lets you create your own comics. You can use the existing library of characters - or create your own. Add yourself and your friends to your scenes.
This is an awesome tool, with loads of possibilities - not all of which are unproductive. What about a slide for that PowerPoint presentation, featuring your boss as a character?

don't you wish your moleskine looked like this?

Mike Rohde took some really good notes, while at SXSW. Yes, he captured the most salient points of the panels he attended. But unlike you or I, he managed to beautifully illustrate them.
These super glorious notes weren't done after-the-fact. This was done LIVE, during the panels, sometimes even in the front of the room, on a huge sketch pad, for all to see. I watched them myself during at least one of the panels. And now you can enjoy them all, in his Flickr photoset. Amazing.
You should invite him to your next event's keynote, and then give limited edition prints of his notes to all of the attendees.

It's a pretty rare event that conceptual, strategy, copywriting, design, illustration, sound design and flash development all converge to produce something great. Unscrew America is just that type of project.
The goal is to inform people about energy-efficient CFLs and LEDs - and also make sure people know that CFLs contain mercury and have to be properly recycled.
The incredible online component to the campaign feature beautious Flash animation, video, audio, writing, and everything else. Boom Design Group and their sister company Fluid did the Flash and sound design and video.
There's also print ads and even a tv component, which includes a role for Paul Reubens. Can't wait to see that. Nice campaign, by GSD&M. Nice job!!

how politicians waste our money

(Well, this is only one way.)
The most ridiculous ad spend ever. C'mon. Puhleeze. And let's just pretend that the cause is worthwhile (which it isn't), why do politicians always pay for youth oriented creative that looks like it was produced by grandparents? "Don't be lame..elevate your game?" Right. Ok.
If the headline wasn't bad enough, they also asked grandpa for a totally awesome youth-connecting illustration. "And let's put the city skyline in the background. Kids really like that." It's urban.
Go Texas.
