santa is ready to ride
What if your hospital was the one responsible for keeping Santa healthy, and making sure he's fit for his big night?
This is a most awesome self promotional piece for UNC Healthcare that is family friendly branding at its holiday best. Thanks, Casey!

not all hospitals produce lame ads

The health care industry is soooo ripe for heart touching creative campaigns, yet most hospitals opt instead for pictures of their doctors or tv spots about robot surgery. Blech.
So when a health care provider does produce fantastic creative, it stands out even more. Such is the case with this new print campaign by the Credit Valley Hospital. Nice work.

lawyers: please stop it.
You're probably already thoroughly entertained by the disclaimer copy at the end of most pharmaceutical ads that promises projectile diarrhea, loss of appendages and melting eyeballs.
Bill Baker points to a hilarious legal disclaimer on the Ambien site. The home page features some models rotating on a giant six foot in diameter pill. There's a disclaimer that says "not actual pill size."
If that's not enough, the accompanying television ad features a magical floating pill over a sleeping woman's head, with particles sprinkling their way into her skull. The printed legal disclaimer says "dramatization."
Seriously??

baby, I'm on fire

Marketing executives love to discuss branding, positioning, unique selling propositions and copy, but often glaze over at imagery. "Make the logo bigger," they might say.
Here's evidence that images are worth thinking about. Wow.

computer tans are tantastic!

All of the hot people at your office are probably tanning themselves right now. And your pasty, geeky skin could use a little color, too.
Stuck in the middle of winter? Not a problem! Now you can tan from the comfort of your own cubicle. With nothing but your computer monitor. Awesome, fun piece for SKCin.

the changing face of free

Stop and Shop has launched an interesting promotion. They're giving away FREE antibiotic prescriptions.
What a fantastic way to do a great thing. This will certainly drive traffic to the store - but it's also making a statement in the neighborhood: we care.
People lost interest in balloons, pens, poorly-designed baseball hats and other FREE crapola years ago. Offering something of value to customers who are sick is a refreshing approach.
If you were just prescribed meds and got them for free, wouldn't you remember the brand that made that possible? What could you do for free that has actual value?

da lads are killin' cancer like the vermin it is

Ye only thing more crusty than the rickets is the cancer. This here campaign for the Children's Cancer Institute of Australia is mighty good and mighty scary. It'll soften yer heart, rightly so.

google launches google health

The Google gods have just launched Google Health. Here's a place that users can complete, upload and import their entire medical history. All of their health records in one place.
This could be a massive opportunity for those in the health care industry. Google's available API means that we can now build fanstastical new tools to allow patients things that weren't available before. Think that mashups using Google Maps are exciting? Imagine the things that might be done in health care.
And there's some very interesting discussion going on over at Fred Wilson's blog, A VC. Fred wants to make his health record public, and was surprised that there was no "share" button. That might be a little extreme - but it points to how the world is changing.
This should be exciting for the health care industry. Here's a wonderful tool, backed by Google, that most health care marketers wouldn't be able to develop or manage on their own. Google just eliminated the development budget for them. Now they can integrate into their own tools, and create good things for users all around.
Hooray, Google.

abercrombie and fitch: saving lives?

Ummm...I don't know what to say about this. Abercrombie and Fitch Hospital. Do you have to have six pack abs to get in for treatment? Or, if I go there, could I leave with six pack abs? Do they have those giant half naked teen pics up in their lobbies?
I'm completely fine with title sponsors, especially when it makes sense for both parties involved. But Abercrombie Hospital?? Oh, what I would paid to have been in the meeting where a committee thought that was a grand idea.

Immodium should get their licensing people on this right now. Would be soooo awesome as a tv campaign. Isn't it fun to sing about diarrhea? From Christopher Price, via Facebook.

gi jonny, now with telescope ass
Ummmm....this clip is not something you should send to your mom. But if you want to educate college (or high school) students that the risk of HIV is still very real, it's spot on.
And, there's a website too - where GI Jonny fans can watch the clip again - and get very real educational information. There's even details on how to sponsor your own GI Jonny event. Go, Jonny.

sexy package design idea for pharma

Here's a product made for birth control pills - but this would be a cool idea for any pharma packaging. Pill bottles with alarms built into them.
Even better - Target should offer this as an add on, to any prescription they sell. $1 more, and get the alarm bottle. $2 more, and we'll set the alarm for you. (Cuz old people can't set digital clocks, you know.) Packaging that provides a user benefit rocks.

this week at via/plaid

Here's what happened this week at the world's most 'wishing it was sunny' design and branding firm:
Wow. What a week.
Loads and loads of new business. And then some more. Totally awesome.
We just started working with the Westport Country Playhouse - and will be rocking the theater industry upside down. There's a really rich history here - many people know of the Paul Newman/Joanne Woodward factor, but the playhouse actually dates back to 1930, and their stage has been graced by the likes of Liza Minelli, Kitty Carlisle, Henry Fonda, Eva Gabor, and Jane Fonda.
We also just received approval on a couple of internet projects for a Connecticut hospital. One of the first is a site for bariatrics. That surgery that helps obese people lose weight. We're stoked about this - it's a classic opportunity to connect with real humans and make a difference in their lives. Not often that we get to do that, in the design and branding world.
We won five Ad Club awards! I'm pretty sure that's the most we've ever won at any one show. Pretty stoked.
The rebranding of our agency to Plaid is in full swing. We've pretty much selected a logo, designed the new concept for the website, and involved the community in the process. You can read the play by play at our re-branding blog, ThinkPlaid.
I'm on vacation next week!! Some exciting and super smart bloggers will be filling my shoes while I'm away.

revolution health is well, revolutionary?

This is an interesting launch. It's a great example of new internet tools, design and thinking being brought to something that you thought was already done - or even overdone. Or so boring, and already done by everyone else, that it's not worth looking at again.
Health Care information. Health care sites are hardly exciting, and it would seem like that's been pretty well covered on the interweb. But Revolution Health has come at the health care industry with a new angle. Dare I say, a "web 2.0" angle.
It's also interesting that Steve Case is involved in this. Maybe now is the time to reinvent everything that's already been done on the internet. Can design and new internet tools reinvent your business? From BrainFuel.
