sun powered leds say light up the world ![]() This massive light wall was built for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Nothing you haven't seen before, until you learn...that the whole thing is powered by the sun. Wow. Imagine Vegas, or Times Square - powered by the sun. Oh, the future is going to be a spectacular place. Sun powered, color changing cars. Entire streets as art projects. Roads that light up as you drive on them. And jetpacks will come in to play somewhere, I'm sure. Labels: architecture, green, outdoor, technology

best podcast ever recorded ![]() Maybe even the best audio ever recorded. Imagine hearing my voice - drone on and on, about the new Zyrtek campaign, about Earth Day, and online ethics (!) Now you can. Thanks to The Custom Scoop Magazine and their Media Bullseye Roundtable. I'm featured on the latest episode, along with experts Sarah Wurrey and Jennifer Zingsheim. Listen to be dazzled. Or listen to count how many times that I say "um." This is a great series, featuring some really intelligent discussion about marketing, branding, social media and our industry in general. They've lowered their standards for this episode on a one-time-only basis, and assure me that the rest of their shows will feature real guests. Who don't say "um" as much. time to be an alarmist ![]() Here's a new twist on a social protest. The flash mob done in a new way. Alarmists. Set your alarm (cell phone, watch, desk clock, whatever) to go off on the 11th day of every month, at 11am. And when your friends look at you as if to say "what a dork - turn that thing off - we're trying to work here," tell them what it's all about. And they'll tell two friends... Or - you could wear a FlavaFav style clock around your neck. One of those old school alarm clocks with the big bells on top. Soon, at 11am on the 11th, we'll all be stopping, and listening to alarms. Cool idea. Labels: green, nonprofit, social media

let a meatball help you be more green ![]() Wanting to be more green in your life, and you're not sure how? Wish that you had a talking meatball friend to guide you in your green ways? Me too. Well, your prayers have been answered by Do The Green Thing, an ongoing effort to educate people on how to live more green. Each month, there's a new video, and there's loads of educational content too. This month is all about eating meat. Or not eating meat. Or not eating singing, dancing meat. Or something.

the land of misfit toys really exists ![]() BuyMyTronics is a new service that buys your old, unwanted, or broken ipods, iphones, Playstations, Zunes (!) and other gadgets. They repair them, and then sell them used. It's the ultimate in green gadget recycling program. You don't have to feel guilty about your dead iPod in a landfill, and you make money to boot. Someone who couldn't afford a new iPod gets your refurbished model, once it's fixed. Everyone wins. What an awesome business model for our greenlicious future. From EcoGeek. Labels: green, technology

sex and the socket makes energy sexy Personally, I'm annoyed by everything Sarah Jessica Parker, and her sex show. But I can see where some people would really dig this production called Sex and the Socket. I'm just stoked that I got to use the word sex a bunch of times in this post, which is sure to deliver lots of Google juice. Sexy.

buy something old. avoid shiny and new. To promote DoTheGreenThing.com, and specifically to promote buying something old for holiday gifts rather than something new, Do the Green Thing produced a video about Joseph, Mary and their donkey. As a bonus, you can also learn how Jesus got his name. Sweet.

what happened to the eco flag? ![]() Back in the 1970's, there was a super big eco boom. I believe it was similar to what we're experiencing today, with 'green.' Before that period, (and before this spot) people proudly threw garbage out their car window. And there was a huge smokestack in every backyard. There was a sweet green and yellow eco logo and flag that became the universal symbol of the movement. What happened to the sweet eco flag? Why did it die? Just wondering. is your out of the box marketing piece offending greensters? ![]() AboutDesign makes a great point about a new ad insert for Yellow Tail Wines. He was offended by the ad. Not in the traditional way you might expect to be offended by advertising. There was no racy message, nudity or inappropriate language here. Richard was offended by waste. Yellow Tail Wines produced an insert in RealSimple Magazine, where the ad incorporated blinking LED lights. You've seen this before - cute, and attention-getting. And probably a significant budget expenditure for the brand. What they didn't consider was that they'd also be putting hundreds of thousands of electronic parts into a landfill. Not a great practice for a product that originates from the earth. It's not easy being green. Customer perceptions and cares are changing. And as creatives, we're not all accustomed to thinking about the impact of our physical campaigns. But some audiences are paying attention - as evidenced by Richard's post. Before launching your next physical campaign, it may be a good idea to ask things like: "what impact does this have to the environment?" "how will my customers with environmental concerns perceive this piece?" Because the best advertising can capture attention and be green. Labels: adindustry, ads, beverage, green, yummyfood

ride the trains or animals will turn on the sexfest Virgin Trains just launched a really smart - and hilarious campaign to promote their train service. The greener sort of travel. I was recently meeting with a client who remarked how Virgin is a mondo conglomerate of brands and companies, yet they've managed to stay...Virgin. And this is a great example. Check out the really funny YouTube video above, and a campaign hub/microsite too. Work is from Glue.

kaiser chiefs say unpluggit There's a campaign to unplug your devices, in an effort to save energy. Like your cell phone charger, after your phone is already charged. As you might expect, it's called UnpluggIt. Anyway, coolio band The Kaiser Chiefs just signed on with their support, in the cute YouTube clip above. (If you don't know who the Kaiser Chiefs are, then you'll just see a couple of cool english dudes talking about unplugging stuff.) Carry on. Labels: green, technology, trends, youthmarketing

cows fart. eat steak. A meatylicious print ad convincing readers that eating beef will help the environment. You see, cows fart. And their farts aren't good for the ozone. So, by eating a cow, you're protecting the environment. The work is for Maredo's Steakhouse in Malaysia.
