business cards...really?

The other day we rush printed new business cards for some of us heading to SXSW. (Check out my new title!)

You can't go to a major conference like SXSW without cards, right? Wrong. I handed out about four cards. Maybe five, if you include the card that was required to get a free t-shirt at the Veer booth.

And for me, SXSW was all about meeting people. I met hundreds of new people. Some amazing people. Some really smart people. The thing is, they don't need my card. And I don't need theirs. If we made a mark on each other, we know how to find each other - and we've probably already connected on Twitter.

People like Steve Rubel are really proud of the fact that their Twitter ID is now on their card. (We've been doing this for years.) I ask: do we really need cards at all?

We are in desperate need for a universal contact exchange (that people are willing to adopt) that does not involve paper. Plenty of companies have invented this, but no one has created a product that's hit the hot button. Yet. This has to come soon. Maybe Google, Facebook or Twitter will make it happen. Or maybe we'll just keep printing rectangular squares with website addresses on them.

How many pieces of paper have you left behind, recently?

i don't need your card

I've been saying this forever, but Chris Brogan just perfectly summarized what should be the new business card etiquette, everywhere:

Unless you want to do business with me, don’t give me a business card. We both know how to reach each other, so unless one of us asks for one, let’s not hand them out. We tend to give out business cards because we’ve been taught this is what to do. It’s not. It’s the old way. In the old way, we just blast people with messages whenever WE need something. In the new way, you and I should only exchange cards if we’re looking to do future business. Otherwise? We roughly know how to reach each other, don’t we?

Save a card. Save the planet. Rewire the way humans do business.

Seems like common sense, right? Yet how many meetings did you sit through in the last week, where everyone in the meeting did the card exchange? Even though everyone in the meeting is already on the same email thread.

Business cards: only when you absolutely need them. (Pictured above: the single best business card, ever.)

let's get naked and cuddle

The Green Thing reminds us that we can help the earth by turning down our thermostats. This weekend is the perfect time to turn that into an opportunity for nakedness with your loved one. Keep each other warm, and save the environment, too.

Green Thing has created a handful of ready-to-send Valentine's day cards that you can send your honey as an invitation to cuddle together for warmth.

Here's the one that I've made for you.

greenalicious design that tastes great

Imagine a product design that looks super hot. Then imagine that design could reduce air pollution. And reduce water pollution. And save energy. A product design change that can accomplish all of that?

Meet the "naked" coke can. There are 24 billion coke cans produced every year. That's a lot of Coca Cola red paint. Not only does that create boku waste in manufacturing, but removing the paint adds a step to the recycling process. Eliminate the paint and you reduce manufacturing crap, and make recycling easier.

Gizmodo has all the math proving this is the most awesome greenalicious package redesign ever. Awesomeness times ten.

fake ny post paper raises awareness about climate change

The Yes Men, professional pranksters extraordinaire, created their own versions of the NY Post complete with headlines and stories that talk about how climate change could unleash heat waves, flooding, and other disasters over the next decades. Nearly one million copies of the paper were distributed throughout NYC along with a fake website, all to commemorate Climate Week.

According to the Yes Men blog post on the stunt, the 32-page New York Post is a fake, but everything in it is 100% true, with all facts carefully checked by a team of editors and climate change experts. From SJ Boden.

Your sneakers are killing rain forests. Seems like a stretch? Greenpeace puts the entire story together for you.

Thankfully my sneakers are nylon, so instead of killing rain forests, some plastic/nylon factory is spewing out cancerous exhaust from a giant smokestack. I guess this means that we finally have to buy those uglified hemp sneakers. Dammit. I hate those ugly foot covers.

science is awesome

Scientists rock. Not because they're curing disease, or eliminating pollution and bad things from our lives - but because they've invented a car that can change color with the weather.

For real. MINI is introducing a model at the Singapore car show that changes color. It will auto morph into a more reflective color on hot days (to reflect the heat) or darker colors on colder days (to attract the sun.)

tweet your energy usage

This involves science, math, and electrical engineering, so don't expect any creative explanation from me...but the people at The Green Thing are tweeting their electricity usage for events.

If it were really possible to utilize a "twitter plug," this would be a cool idea for events to feature a badge on their website, showcasing actual energy usage for the event. A clear announcement that they care, and are taking steps to reduce usage, with a live read on what's actually happening.

NYC just passed a bill requiring retail chain stores to close the door if the A/C is on. Seems pretty logical. But if they close their doors, how will they pump the annoying Abercrombie music out onto the streets?

This is an interesting trend in the greening of retail. Architects, retailers and merchandisers should pay attention. Window displays and doors will have to welcome visitors in new ways - while being closed. Maybe doormen will come back. And elevator button dudes. The Greeter industry. Love it.

green marketing: not painting brands green?

A new report is showing
that people don't necessarily see a company as being environmentally responsible, just because they spent millions of dollars telling them so.

Walmart, GE, and Bank of America, three brands that lead spending (of green) in bragging about their green-ness, weren't perceived as being green. This, by an audience of people who really, really want to know which companies are green.

And when your friends look at you as if to say "what a dork - turn that thing off - we're trying to work here," tell them what it's all about. And they'll tell two friends...

Back in the 1970's, there was a super big eco boom. I believe it was similar to what we're experiencing today, with 'green.' Before that period, (and before this spot) people proudly threw garbage out their car window. And there was a huge smokestack in every backyard.

There was a sweet green and yellow eco logo and flag that became the universal symbol of the movement. What happened to the sweet eco flag? Why did it die? Just wondering.

is your out of the box marketing piece offending greensters?

AboutDesign makes a great point about a new ad insert for Yellow Tail Wines. He was offended by the ad. Not in the traditional way you might expect to be offended by advertising. There was no racy message, nudity or inappropriate language here. Richard was offended by waste.

Yellow Tail Wines produced an insert in RealSimple Magazine, where the ad incorporated blinking LED lights. You've seen this before - cute, and attention-getting. And probably a significant budget expenditure for the brand. What they didn't consider was that they'd also be putting hundreds of thousands of electronic parts into a landfill. Not a great practice for a product that originates from the earth.

It's not easy being green. Customer perceptions and cares are changing. And as creatives, we're not all accustomed to thinking about the impact of our physical campaigns. But some audiences are paying attention - as evidenced by Richard's post.

Before launching your next physical campaign, it may be a good idea to ask things like:
"what impact does this have to the environment?"
"how will my customers with environmental concerns perceive this piece?"

Because the best advertising can capture attention and be green.
