rethinking the fast food receipt

Some states (like New York) have already passed legislation that requires fast food businesses to post calorie information next to their food selections.

Small chain Burgerville in Oregon has taken it a step further. When your order is complete, your receipt includes a complete rundown of nutritional information for everything you've ordered. This works perfect in concert with Burgerville's positioning of local ingredients, fresh food and yummy selection.

Want to add them to your store? It's all made possible by a firm called Nutricate. From @katiefritz.

the best looking arbys ever

Think fast food restaurants can't blend into the neighborhood? Check out this new Arby's in Brooklyn.

They just opened in a landmark building, and have renovated a space to become "one of the most posh and historic restaurant interiors in the city" according to Brownstoner. Proof that your brand experience can bend a little to fit your audience. Even in fast food.

let's get pizza for lunch.

Dominos Pizza takes the criticism about their pizza head on - and listens. They've reinvented their recipe, have pizza that they say is now awesome, and they're ready to tell the world.

You've probably seen the ad campaign, which centers around their confidence in the new recipe. This video tells the story in more detail, with actual Dominos employees - and it's so believable that you'll want to order a pizza. Today. From @gangwayadv

burger king in the near future

Burger King is planning a massive overhaul of 12,000 locations worldwide. According to the pics on MSNBC, they're going to be styled in a futuristic way. (That is, if in the future everything is red, white and plastic.)

Let's hope there's free internet on those magical red computer monitors.

Johnny, please go pick the lettuce off the fish tank

In the past few years Philips has launched design probes that blow your mind (our favorite is the skin tattoo that changes colors based on your state of, um, arousal). Now Philips helps feed your family. This environmentally friendly "Biosphere Home Farming" concept houses fish and vegetables while generating cooking gas. You feed it all with trash.

Only question is, where do we put our empty bottles?

how hardees harnessed the power of holes

You've probably already had a few friends send you a link to the latest Hardees promotion. If you haven't already checked it out, you should.

Neal Stewart points us to a great post about why this is such a successful campaign.

They've hit all of the important points, and created content that engages users at every level:

+ People who only want to watch have plenty to consume
+ People who want to create have opportunities to contribute based on their personal comfort level (write in, video participation, voting, etc)
+ And everyone can share.

Now let's go eat those tasty little holes. Or whatever you want to call them.

the banana man is your friend. he will not harm you.

Banana man is the coolest dude ever. You will want to hang and have beers with the banana man. Although he would probably drink banana beers, and you may not like bananas in your beer.

Why can't there be a banana man television series?

betty crocker: faces of evil?

Advertising Is Good For You points to a post showing the story behind ten famous food logos.

It fun to see the history of the Morton Salt girl or Betty Crocker. I never realized how scary and uninspiring Mrs. Crocker was. With the exception of the 1965 Betty, I might hesitate accepting a cupcake from the others. Especially 1986 Betty. Pretty sure she's just a robot sent here from the future, to kill us.

the colonel is coming to fix your roads

KFC just launched a promotion where they'll send the Colonel to five major cities across the nation. To fill potholes.

KFC wants to promote their ability to fill bellies with fresh meat by filling holes with fresh tar. It's a part of their "Fresh Tastes Best" campaign.

Freshening city roads is a cool idea that's sure to make everyone happy. Picking up the cost will make five cities very happy. And the Colonel in road-working safety gear will make the press photographers really happy. Everyone wins. Let's get chicken.

Download the Colonel's open letter to Mayors here: http://senduit.com/bdbc8b. (That link will be live for one week, thanks to the folks at Senduit.)

Colonel: call us. You need a campaign site that tells the story. A big promotion without a url is a missed opportunity. We know people.

skittles: was it good for you?

The Twittersphere was all-a-tweeting yesterday about the new Skittles site that launched last week. The site features a dashboard over popular social media sites set to Skittles. So there's a live Twitter feed of what people are saying about Skittles, a Skittles Flickr page, Facebook page, etc.

Yesterday the site generated a significant portion of all twitter conversation. The Skittle chatter has largely been centered around two points:

1. The Skittles site was inspired-by/ripped-off-from a popular industry agency Modernista site, launched over a year ago.

2. The site's content is now largely influenced by the community. Want to tweet that your coworker just choked to death on Skittles? It'll appear on the front page of the site.(Just like the Modernista layoffs appeared on the news page of their site.)

I say:
So what: No candy consumer has ever heard of Modernista. As long as the creators of the Skittles piece (Agency.com) acknowledge the influence - who cares?

Yummy: When was the last time you spent time on a candy website?

Big deal: Generating a single digit percentage of the Twittersphere conversation is a big deal. But in reality, a speck in the landscape of consumerville. I'll bet the average Skittles target hasn't even heard about all of the hub-bub. Yet.

What about you? Feeling the Skittles love?

brand new cereal in super old boxes

General Mills has released retro versions of some of their best selling cereals. They're for sale in Target and other retailers, and clearly going after an older demographic who will spend money on nostalgia.

We assume that the cereal is fresh, and not just some stuff that that they found locked in an old General Mills warehouse for decades.

Security guard #1: What are they going to do with all of this 40 year old product?
Security guard #2: I'll bet Bob in Marketing would have a field day with this.

From Coudal.

compressed chicken parts surrounded by a deep fried crust. mmmmn nuggnuts.

By now, you've probably seen the new campaign for McD's chicken nuggets. If you haven't already peeked at the campaign site, it's worthy of a visit. Probably some of the freshest creative that McDonalds has seen in a very, very long time. I like the Nuggnut pledge.

But...it's still just compressed chicken parts with a crust, right?

UPDATE:
Megan Severs from McD's PR firm writes us to say:
I wanted to let you know that McDonald’s actually recently gave consumers a behind the scenes look at how McNuggets are made - from farm to fork. You can watch a video of their tour and read what they had to say about the quality of the chicken in McNuggets after witnessing the process first-hand

Thanks, Megan!

pasta hut = silly ridiculous idea

There are a lot of people that can't cook. But there's one thing most people are capable of producing without the aid of a microwave oven: pasta. It's pretty difficult to mess up pasta. And even the most inept person can make a pot of pasta and pour some crappy jar sauce on top. THAT'S why pasta delivery is a bad idea. Most people can't make their own pizza. Or Chinese Food. But even I can make pasta.

So what a hoot to learn that Pizza Hut "has rebranded" as Pasta Hut. A cute little promotional campaign for a product that's doomed to fail. If you want plain, nothing-to-write-home-about pasta and sauce, you don't need Pizza Hut. Just stop by my house on a "dad's cooking" night.

From Brad J Ward. (An awesome Twitter buddy, too.)

rachael ray loves food

And I love Rachael Ray. But, like Adfreak, I had to chuckle a little bit when I saw the endorsement for Dunkin Donuts. Rachael Ray runs on Dunkin. Anyway, Adfreak has a hilarious post about how Rachael will pretty much endorse absolutely anything. And they point to the awesome Rachael mmmmmmm video, featured above. Turn the sound way up, and your cubicle neighbor will swear you're watching porn.

Two great tastes that taste great together!

Looking for inspiration? Open the fridge.

I'm a foodie, and to me one of the best things about cooking is the endless variety of dishes that can be created from a basic vocabulary of ingredients. Inventive food pairings, where two iconic tastes are brought together to create something totally original and delicious, is the highest form of this art. A perfect example is the chocolate and peanut butter combination we know and love. But today, I want to blow your mind with: bacon popcorn.

I recommend the folks at Slashfood for a daily dose of recipes and ideas that challenge our assumptions about what goes with what. Go for the inspiration, stay for the food porn!
