chat roulette chick challenge

You've probably already seen your local news station sensationalizing the dangers of the the new internet hit Chat Roulette, a social video chat service that pairs random visitors with other random visitors for instant video chat. (Hilarity, freakeeness and NSFW activities ensue.)
Now French Connection has launched a new promotion on the controversial network that will pay cash to any man (or woman) who can successfully seduce a woman on Chat Roulette.
Awesome timing with a new tool that's getting loads of buzz and yet somehow directly on target for a slightly edgy fashion brand. Good sleazy fun for anyone who wants it.

the future of apparel is all about you.

Always wanted a photo of your dog on your shorts? Or a photo of your local beach? Or your own custom illustration? Done, Done and done.
Shortomatic has brought to the world of boardshorts what Threadless brought to t-shirts, and what Vans brought to sneakers.
Now you can make your own shorts, or choose from a gallery of artist designed shorts. Submit your own designs and earn up to $1000. Everyone wins and looks hot on the beach. Which is really what life is all about, anyway.
We've seen the future, and it's designed by you. Suhweet.

Well, then you'll love this collection of the top ten worst figure skating costumes. (Please, let's create a parody video of ice dancing ridiculousness...) Thanks, Kevin!

everything you ever wanted to know about jeans

There's a new show at NYU devoted entirely to the history, art and love of denim. Who would have thought that a fabric could be woven so importantly into our pop culture over the last 200 years?
This show takes a deep look at the importance of jeans in our cultural history through photography, mixed media and a pantload of artful contributors.

the definition of "cool" has changed.

Carol Phillips has an interesting take on hipsters and how the personality of trendsetters among the millennial generation has changed.
Carol suggests that today's influencers are the "doers" in their groups. So it's much less about fashion, and much more about what they're accomplishing. Doers are fixing, leading, changing, advocating, and entrepreneuring. So influencers are actually making a difference outside their circles of influence, and thereby gaining influence inside their circle of friends.

how to be prom king on the internet

What can Versace teach you about marketing in the social media world? Read this excellent post about Versace style marketing in a Gap world.
Mary McKnight explains that "The popular kids never give tutorials on how to become popular. And they never go out and sit down at the loser nose pickers lunch table and make them their tribe."

the holiday cards are here

The Gap has released their holiday greeting card just in time for Thanksgiving, and it lets you send a customized cheer (with annoying lumberjack style models) to your friends. The dancing lumberjacks tie to the tv campaign that just launched with the same theme. (Everyone knows that lumberjacking cheerleaders are the new hot.)
What's really smart about this piece is that the recipients get a 20% off coupon code. That's not a bad thing to send to a friend. (If they like the Gap.) So is it a holiday card? Or an entertaining coupon?

the netflix for designer dresses

Rent the Runway is a fashionista's dream come true. You get to browse through an inventory of top designer dresses. They send you the dress (or two) of your choice. Once the party is over, you toss it in an envelope and mail it back to Rent the Runway.
According to the New York Times, over 20,000 women have already signed up for the service. What's especially cool about this is that they took inspiration from other industries and reconsidered the business model for their trade.

naked victoria's secret models can sell anything
This is more than just naked girls prancing in the street. It's an effort to promote Victoria's Secret. Even though there doesn't appear to be any Victoria's Secret apparel in the clip. The press release say that it's "already received a lot of attention around the world for its titillating music video". Interesting.
Apparently this is part of a new Victoria's Secret TV campaign - even though the video was released months ago (because tv is slow??). And the parody is just as entertaining.

handicraft is not dead

Sometimes we get so caught up in our digital selves that we forget there are some beautiful things happening on paper. Yeah - that tactile substance that people used to print words on.
Check out this project for Swedish fashion brand Elvine, by agency Next Century Modern. Not only did they design and produce a beautiful catalog for the brand, but they included a handcrafted element that most firms would say "isn't possible." Or "too complicated."
Sometimes it's fun to see what you can accomplish with a handful of coworkers, some bbq, beer and spray paint. In this case, Elvine ends up with 5000 stunning print catalogs that are as unique as their clients.
They even produced a video documenting their process of hand painting 5000 books. Nice touch.

lonny: the new domino

Fans of the now defunct Domino Magazine can rejoice in a publishing celebration that it's been brought back to life. Kind of. A former editor of the now dead publication has launched Lonny (that's what happens when you combine London and New York).
What's cool about Lonny is that it's an online only publication that reads like its old school paper friend. It feels foreign (and maybe annoying) at first, but once you accept the navigation it's not so bad. Even better, they've linked most of the products featured in the publication's pages to online sellers. That's a boon to readers and marketers.

can your brand inspire baked love?

This makes us even more stoked that we're stopping at Threadless while on the PlaidNation tour.
The super cool t-shirt company has started a new promotion: Threadcakes. Cakes inspired by favorite Threadless t-shirts. Start baking now, and you could win sweet prizes!
This is a great idea that leverages the love of the brand and t-shirt art, all while producing loads and loads of great content for friends (and bloggers) to share with the world.
(Anything with baked goodness = immediate win in our book.) Thanks, RJ!
UPDATE:
Threadless fan Chris Cardinal gives us the low down:
Threadcakes is actually not run by Threadless. It's run by a Threadless fan, me, Chris Cardinal. They *are* supplying the prizes, and promoting it, but the website, the concept, the rules, and administration is all me.
(Last time around, they awarded me with a Bestee-a community award-for my efforts, which was quite nice of them.)
But if you're writing about brand stuff, all the more interesting that it's a fan putting this much effort into something than the company itself, no? :-)
We agree - now this is even MORE amazing. A brand so awesome that fans actually organize and implement contests on their behalf!!

a micro niche audience that's totally hot

So the people at Vans are doing something a little different. They've opened a Model Lounge at the Delicatessen Restaurant in NYC.
Here's how it works: Access is limited to female fashion models at invited Top 10 Agencies. They get an all-access card. They get to hang with other beautious types between casting calls, shoots and cigarettes. They get a bunch of cool gifts (and Vans gear) that they could totally afford to buy on their own. They see the entire Vans Girls line.
And just maybe, hot models start wearing the Vans Girls product. And then other girls follow suit. And guys like hot girls that wear Vans. And so they buy more Vans product. Hot girls are happy, guys are frustrated and Vans sells product.
Genius? Weird? Proof that hot people live better than you do? All of the above?

what kind of jeans are you wearing?

This is Herd points to an interesting study that classifies two forms of personality measurement - avoidance and anxiety. Depending on how you fit into either category, you'll react to brands differently.
They've cited the jeans that people choose as an example:
"Anxious individuals who were more avoidant of relationships tended to choose Abercrombie jeans, which were perceived to be more exciting than sincere. In contrast, anxious individuals who seek intimacy in relationships were more likely to pick Gap jeans, which were perceived as more sincere than exciting."
This is some interesting reading, and further proof that your sociology classes have more to do with branding than any advertising class. Coworker Justus contemplates this information, above.

what to wear with a wife beater t-shirt
Really? Who approved this? Someone actually said "yeah, that's great. Let's run with it."??? The perfect suit for the woman hating man.

when widgets rock.
Sure, women in bras and panties will always get attention - but Victoria Secret took that a step further. The Victoria Secret widget is a sexalicious example of how a widget can be used to promote an event.
As Adverblog points out, it's on-brand, well designed and has all of the goods required to promote the event, and widget sharing. (Nearly naked people doesn't hurt, either.)

microsoft: our fashion is cooler than our operating system

As a part of the new Crispin, Porter & Bogusky campaign for Microsoft, they're producing apparel. T-shirts. Like old school, looks-like-vintage designs. The line is called "Softwear by Microsoft" and hits select stores on December 15.
It's possible that some snarky Microsoft non-lovers might sport these, in true ironic style. And then the brand becomes just .05% cooler to those that see it. Proof that changing brand perception is a long haul, and that you need to do more than ads.
I like:
+ That Crispin is thinking beyond the obvious brand campaigns.
I'm confused:
+ T-shirts? Will it make your computer actually work, or easier to use?

david lynch does gucci
I was just chatting about the wonderment of Eraserhead with a client yesterday, so it was a welcome and weird coincidence to discover some new David Lynch work. Only this time, it's a television ad for...Gucci.
Hearing Heart of Glass is kind of fresh, but it's still no Diesel meat puppet. I guess we still love it for that sweet Lynchalicious cinematography.

polar fleece: just the thing for trampolines

Uniqlo just launched yet another beautious Flashterpiece to promote their new line of Polar Fleece wear. This time, they've included some jumping acrobatic crazy people from Cirque du Soleil.

robot humans working in giant machine

Uniqlo had a fun stunt in Times Square yesterday. A ginormous vending machine filled with human robots. To give away samples of their new super-duper-keep-you-warm t-shirts.
Watch the poorly shot video at Gizmodo. Thanks, Devon!

mobile gets awesome in capetown

Good mobile promotions are hard to find. Most suck, don't get adoption, and don't provide real value for the participants. But Cow Africa has done something awesome.
Cow created Mobikasi - the first ever geo-tagged documentary. It's a 25 minute documentary - but realizing that no human on earth has a 25 minute attention span anymore - they've made the film available in 25 individual downloads.
And here's where it gets good. Each minute of the documentary is based on a different topic relevant to the youth in Soweto, and it's geo-tagged to the location where it was shot. They feature cool stuff like the street fashion crew Smarteez, pictured above. So kids can experience the production, and then go check out the area where it was shot. Genius.
(And how do I start my own street fashion crew?? Anyone want to join?)

what to wear at the polls today

Mads Norgaard has some pretty sweet apparel that we probably can't afford. Except the underwear. You should definitely wear these undies to the voting booth today.
Not an Obama man? No worries. Wear them on your head. You'll freak out the other voters in line, scare people away and end up helping the McCain campaign. ;)

people in socal have it too easy

If you live in southern California, you can wear a swimsuit to work. And you can text your coworkers while outdoors in February. But if you're stuck in the northeast, and you want to walk the sidewalks aimlessly, narrowly missing street lights while texting away in the winter, you risk frost bite.
Thankfully, Josh Rubin and his dad have invented Freehands. Gloves with the mobile device user in mind. Genius.

i read the greatest building the other day

Even though everyone and their brother apparently has a library card, you don't need to read things in big heavy books anymore. Sure, ipods and Kindle are awesome, but the really cool people read buildings.
And if you're into the whole reading buildings instead of books movement, then you'll love the latest Diesel effort. After the massive success of their "safe for work porn" (safe depends on how your company draws the line), now they're projecting stories on buildings. That you read. Without pictures. Hmmm.

insert, blow in...what would you call it?

There's a line of underwear called Styx. And they don't get up all in your crack. So how do you communicate that product feature in a print ad? An insert, of course.
I'm more concerned about the face paint on the Styx models. Is that required to wear this underwear? (You should paint your face like that, and see if anyone in your office notices.)
