you could use a little officeplace tornado

What kind of PowerPoint deck do you need to present to your boss to convince her that the office needs a workplace twister??
Mercedez-Benz has tricked out their museum's HVAC system to produce the world's largest artificial tornado. You should head down to the facility room in your joint, do some re-wiring, and see what you could do.

scion gets all up in your facebook

Scion wants to show you their new limited edition TC car, so they've created a campaign site that pulls items from your Facebook news feed, and puts them in the video.
Maybe this will inspire you to buy the one of only 1100 cars. Or maybe you'll just like seeing your Facebook feed in another video presentation. Or maybe you'll want to share it with your 600 Facebook friends. Scion is waiting.

how to make a fiat cute
Did you ever wonder what your car might look like, if you painted it with your sister's nail polish? Or how long it might take? Yeah, me too.
Watch a new Fiat get painted pink with a little tiny brush and a kabillion bottles of nail polish. It's all part of Pink My Ride, a new campaign for Fiat and lovers of cute pink cars.

tweet while driving. safely.

We've been saying that every car should be a rolling internet device for about a kabillion years now. Hooray to the Ford Motor Company for taking the most forward steps toward making it happen.
They were all the buzz yesterday at the CES show, debuting among other things, their new Sync system - which integrates a Twitter tool (!) and Pandora, an awesome internet radio station.
How sweet to have your tweets read to you outloud, while driving! CEO Alan Mulally says "We're moving at Silicon Valley speed, delivering the car of tomorrow today." (He should have tweeted that, while driving down Las Vegas Blvd.)
Disclosure: Ford is a sponsor of our PlaidNation tour, but that doesn't change our opinion on how awesome they're doing.

Volvo is pretty stoked about their new S60 car. They say it looks totally hot, but they're not ready to show it to you yet. So they hired a blind artist to take a "look" at the car and represent it in a painting. Cool.

new castrol campaign knows your car
Castrol is utilizing some bitchin' technology in their new outdoor campaign.
Their new billboards in London:
+ take a pic of your license plate,
+ match your marker number to the department of motor vehicles database,
+ determine the year and model of your car,
+ cross reference your car year and model against the Castrol database,
+ and then display the type of oil that you should be using.
All in a split second.
Amazing.

mini and audi both go to auto show with "untamed" themes

The Frankfurt Automotive Show will be treated to two campaigns with the "untamed" theme. Audi launches their Untamed Electricity campaign with a campaign site and a bunch of videos about electricity.
Meahwhile, MINI launches MINI. Two Untamed, featuring set of twins getting all untamed with themselves.
Frankly, this just leaves me all confused and wondering what the "tamed" automotive brands are doing.

"i only bought a ford because of twitter."

Some people say trying to monetize Twitter is like trying to monetize the telephone (I tend to agree, mostly), but sometimes Twitter allows for stronger relationship and brand building. Seeing this tweet from Chris Lovett says it pretty succinctly.
And before you say "let's get our best intern on this," consider this post from Church of the Customer. Would you let an intern:
* Man your customer service line?
* Be your receptionist?
* Be your spokesperson to the Wall Street Journal?
* Be the main contact for your most talkative customers?
Is your presence on Twitter creating future tweets like the one from Chris Lovett? Could it?

how to get your friends to carry your car for you
There's a new cute spot for BP that shows a bunch of people lifting and carrying a dude's car around - illustrating that BP fuel Takes You Further.
If you thought that the people in the spot are really strong, or forgot that spots cost a lot of money to make and require massive crews or CG effects to pull stuff like this off, well then you should watch the clip above.
The making of Takes You Further, reveals the tricks behind the floating car, and shares scenes from the shoot. It's always fun to see footage from shoots, and more brands/agencies should share this with the interwebs.

300 tons of advertising

This "bus" was created and parked outside of Sweden's biggest airport, as a part of a campaign titled 50 cars = 1 bus. The installation reminds drivers that they're being carbon pigs, and that things would be so much nicer if they just rode a Flygbussarna bus to the airport.
Apparently the stunt was so successful that it caused traffic jams at the airport. A campaign site helped complete the story. Some cool shots of the build and links to the media coverage are featured on CR Blog.

science is awesome

Scientists rock. Not because they're curing disease, or eliminating pollution and bad things from our lives - but because they've invented a car that can change color with the weather.
For real. MINI is introducing a model at the Singapore car show that changes color. It will auto morph into a more reflective color on hot days (to reflect the heat) or darker colors on colder days (to attract the sun.)
I want one with a remote control, that I can change from an internet browser. Please??? From David Armano.

MINI is at it again, attracting attention to a car that you can't buy yet. It's an awesome concept car that they're showing off at the Bread and Butter conference in Barcelona.
It's a MINI with more room - we guess that when they mean "crossover" they mean not entirely a small car, but not entirely a big car. Whatever. You can't buy it yet, it's just an auto-designer's dream for now.

Even now, after like six examples a day, you're still unsure of what your brand could be doing on Twitter?
Here's another great piece about how companies are using the tool to help their brands. This post talks to Dunkin' Dave (Dunkin Donuts), Scott Monty (Ford Motors), Tony Hsieh (Zappos) and other professional Tweeters to profile how they've used Twitter to help their brands. will we all get free cars if the bailout goes through?

If you've been buried in news or opinions or stress over the automaker bailout, here's a perspective from the other side. Social media rock star Scott Monty, who came in from outside of the auto industry - and from Boston - now works at Ford Motors. He's a one man social media department at an age old automotive brand.
He's posted a really insightful piece reflecting his perspective, some advice and some great links related to the bailout that everyone's talking about.
(And when they begin handing out free cars to the citizens that support the bailout, I'll be driving a Ford Flex - pictured above. Or maybe a Ford Airstream. That would rock.)

ford motors: doing internet marketing right
Marketers, pay attention: harnessing the power of the internet does not mean a YouTube video contest. (Well, it did a few years ago, but we're all over that now.) It IS about utilizing existing tools, creators and audiences and allowing them to do what they do best.
Here's a sweeet example: CommonCraft (maybe you've seen their explanations of Twitter, or the electoral process) produces a video showing exactly how Ford Sync works. And guess what? Without overtly "selling", they've shown product benefits and created desire. Bravo, Ford. And Common Craft. And all who use the internet for goodness.

the road is my record

What if you spaced those "rumble strips" along the road in just the right position so that they played songs as cars drove over them? Adverlab has a great post about the invention and making of some famous 'road songs.'
Songs that are made by cutting thousands of little grooves in the pavement that produce a sound when cars drive over them. (So - if you go back and forth real quick, is that scratching? Could you remix roads?) Just wondering.

turn a hummer into a rolling joke

Ji Lee, Andrew Wilcox and Nelly Ma wanted to do something to raise awareness about the harms of the monster truck mommy vans called Hummers, rolling through suburbia. So they produced Tag a Dummer.
Download perfectly sized "D" letters and you can turn a Hummer into a Dummer. All you'll need is a printer some double stick tape, and you'll be turning beasts into demonstration vehicles!
Users can upload pics of tagged Hummers while learning about the harm they're doing to the environment. (I wonder what Hummer Brand Managers think of all this.) From Josh Spear

esquire and ford get electric
Just in case you don't pay attention to paper based products, or visit a newstand, Esquire did something pretty awesome yesterday. They've released the first ever digital ink magazine. And it features the very first e-ink ad - for the Ford Flex.
They've utilized the same e-ink technology as the Amazon Kindle. Wired doesn't like it. (Jealous?) They do have one point though - People who actually subscribe to Esquire won't be getting the light-up-my-life cover. (Way to punish your fans.)
It's getting massive buzz and water cooler chat, which probably makes it all worthwhile for Esquire and Ford. There are only 100K copies - so you'd better hurry if you want one. What could you be doing with e-ink?

you could drive this on the other side of the world

This is a cool way to illustrate that a Subaru sticks to the road.

when razr phones attack

Silly outdoor for Razr, that's making the rounds this morning. Not sure what it says, other than watch out for giant flying cell phones. Or, if you own a giant cell phone, don't throw it out your window while driving. Or, the new Razr's are so big, they don't fit in your car.

cute cars the next big thing

Wired Magazine has a little piece on the latest Japanese school girl trend. Cute cars.
The Pino, by Nissan, is a sweet little car that comes in a variety of really cool colors, and is completely customizable. From seat patterns, to tissue dispensers, stickers and matching fashions. And, they're cheap. They sell for about $8K - and Nissan has already sold more twice what they projected for the brand. Can't wait for these to hit the USA.

honda sports ads not what you'd expect

This series of ads from Honda rocks. I can imagine they they'd jump out of the publications that they're featured in - which are typically filled with "dude shots" of ATV's and motorcycles getting air. Nice work.

if only this were real.
An excellent spot from Make and Do Creative is making the rounds, without the client tag at the end. Leaving people wondering if maybe it were real.
So wish this could happen to every car shouting salesman, furniture shouting salesman, and every other obnoxious tv pitch pro. See the full version of the spot on the agency's site. Cool work.

japanese nerd cars

What started as a comic nerd trend is beginning to cross over to more mainstream audiences in Japan. Or at least to the cooler geeks. Otaku (aka "geeks") are rollin' with stickered cars and custom comic inspired interiors. The cars are called "itasha", supposedly chosen because the word sounds similar to "italian."
Got a mini-van? Customize it with Sailor Moon stickers. That would rock. Don't even ask your wife. Just do it.

licensing miracle for jeep
Never mind what it cost (I'm sure there's plenty of Jeep money to go around) - but imagine what it took to negotiate licensing for clips from Devo, LOST, Jane Goodall, Elvis, Teletubbies and so much more. Awesome spot.

Artist Heide Hesse created a bubble gum Humvee. Could have used this on tour.

not just for soccer moms anymore

Introducing the new skull crushing, villain killin', go anywhere SUV. From Ford.
It's pretty funny that a Ford SUV was used to crush someone's head in the season finale of the Sopranos, and Ford isn't sure if it's a good thing, or a bad thing. But they definitely didn't pay for the placement. Let the parody spots begin.

can't wait to see this on extreme makeover

I'm a fan of MINI. And all of their branding. But this is a bit much. A MINI fridge. I guess for the guy who keeps a fridge in the garage, or for the person who likes to decorate their apartment just like their car. Thanks Devon!

vw says i'm sorry

Just found this insert in a popular men's magazine, promoting VW. It's an actual greeting card. Here's what it says on the inside. So really, it's an apology card. Something that you can send to the BMW owner that you blew away at the light.
Cuz veedub owners are caring people, yo. Selling the benefits without the boring details? Priceless.

the end of old school radio

BoingBoing reports on a device that was getting a ton of buzz at South by Southwest, called Slacker. It's an internet radio station (both free and premium offerings) AND they're coming out with a hardware device - that feeds off of wifi OR satellite feeds.
The difference is that this device uses existing satellites, so they don't have to blast their own hardware into space, like Sirius or XM do. We'd assume this means satellite radio really cheap. Internet in our car is just moments away. Can't wait.

mini launches hammer and coop

MINI. Just awesome. They've launched their new campaign, to promote the new line of Coopers due for release in a couple of days. It all starts with a trailer for Hammer and Coop. You can see the trailer online - but also in theaters - which is a pretty cool move, for a fake trailer. There are supposed to be new, weekly episodes of the Hammer and the Coop show, I assume, starting on February 17. Lovin' the stache.

fry workers need to laugh more

Typical to their being about 3 days behind the blogosphere, I saw some coverage on broadcast news last night about the K-Fed Superbowl spot. Fry workers are all up in arms about it. C'mon. Have we completely lost our sense of humor? Are we allowed to laugh at anything anymore? Adrants put it best.
At least Nationwide is getting a ton of extra press and publicity, and KFed is collecting a paycheck. (Not sure there's anything actually good about that last one.)
