the end is here

Here's a collection of end titles from old westerns. You needed this.
I suggest that you add them as slides to the super long PowerPoint deck of yours, and just when people think they're at the last slide, keep forwarded to "the end." "the end." "the end." until they just pull you out of the room screaming "it's never over!!" (Clients love this.)

build your own fake google street view car

The F.A.T. organization is not really fond of the fact that Google is trusted with so much of our data. So they organized a F*ck Google week, where people created anti-Google art projects.
The best of the crop was the fake Google street map car. They've even supplied instructions on how to build your own, so that you can cruise the strip and impress chicks. From Laughing Squid.

if world of warcraft were cute...

What if you pulled together some really cool illustrators and creative people to produce a social game that was like World of Warcraft, but friendly, creative and cute? Without all of the swordfights?
Check out Glitch. The latest and most awesomest MMO, created by one of the founders of Flickr. It's not live just yet, but you can read all about the details in CNET.
They're calling it a never ending feast of imagination, a celebration of creativity, a labor of love, and a monument to play. (Not that they're over confident or anything...)

print publishing: the new non-profit?
Giant Robot is the most awesome resource for Asian meets American pop culture. The trouble is, like most pubs on paper, not enough people are subscribing or paying for ads.
They've put together a pretty heart-touching video and fundraising site that explains their predicament and how they need your help.
Kind of makes you wonder if NPR-style fund-drives are the future of print publishing, doesn't it?

empty house turns into ice house

Detroit has more empty and abandoned real estate than most parts of our country. A photographer and architect are collaborating to bring some additional attention to the issue by turning an empty house into an ice house.
You can watch the video, and then help to support the cause. Another beautiful example of the creative community coming together with their actual communities, and making a difference.

There's a new show at NYU devoted entirely to the history, art and love of denim. Who would have thought that a fabric could be woven so importantly into our pop culture over the last 200 years?

Castoo makes killer graphics for casts. Yes, those things that protect your broken bones can now be customized. (Talk about a niche market!) As Springwise points out, putting personalized artwork everywhere is becoming the norm.
You could also make a logical jump to conclude that where there is art, there will be ads. Could Gatorade sponsored broken arms be far away?

what to do with empty retail
An amazing organization called No Longer Empty takes unoccupied retail space in New York City and turn them into public art exhibitions.
Their latest effort Never Can Say Goodbye takes over the legendary Tower Records space (a store that used to sell music on discs) and turns it a show featuring over twenty artists, and feels just a little bit like a record store.
Why not do the same thing in your city?

bring some lady gaga love to your gala

Here's proof that non-profit galas don't have to be total borefests. In fact, you can have fun, bring on some sexy action and bring in the money. That's what the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles did. They had the Bolshoi Ballet dancing to a live Lady Gaga performance. Then they auctioned off the costumes - including a Prada Lady Gaga costume, and a Lady Gaga hat designed by architect Frank Gehry.
What they did awesomely:
+ Created a night of entertainment that was on brand to their cause
+ Created a true one-of-a-kind event that couldn't be experienced anywhere else. Anywhere.
+ Produced one-of-a-kind items worthy of auction that are guaranteed to generate megabucks
Can't you do the same for your non-profit? Do we really need another boring gala dinner with your city's Mayor as the star performer? Sure, not everyone can wrangle Lady Gaga, but here's proof that originality, creativity and fun can live in the most gagalicious non-profit galas ever. Give your audience something to tweet about.

best buy: where art and retail meet?

Last week artist Borna Sammak created an art show at Best Buy.
The plan was to secretly take over all of the monitors on their lower Broadway store in NYC. The artist is known for his renegade installations, and this one went off without police or blue shirt involvement...apparently because Best Buy agreed at some point to let it happen. Win/win for both artist and retailer.

the best theater you'll see on a boat

If you're in NYC tonight, you may want to check out the last showing of The Confidence Man. According to Gothamist, there's nothing like it, anywhere.
The concept takes place on a decommissioned U.S. Coast Guard vessel docked at Pier 40 and is a take on the Herman Melville’s 1857 novel. The show is an immersive experience that takes place on four levels of the ship. It's impossible to see/experience them all, so you choose which side of the story to experience. You're free to wander the ship as the performance is happening, which lets you explore the story in a unique way. Sounds interestingly awesome.

what you can do with your old cassettes

Back in the olden days, people recorded music onto devices not too unlike your iPods of today. Only these devices needed to be played in a larger device, and they could only hold one album or playlist per device. These devices were called cassettes.
Now, you can archive them and enjoy their history (thanks, Joe Snow!) - OR - you can use them to create linear art. Art Backwash shows the entire process for creating Sinatra, pictured above.

this week at Plaid

Here's what happened this week at the world's most awesome creative agency:
Over the weekend, we produced the first of what will be multiple Plaid art initiatives for the community where we work. Chalk Walk brought together professional artists, families and other cool people to color the sidewalks of our city. We commissioned two internationally known artists, Ellis Gallagher and Curtis Goldstein to add to the mix. The result was a bunch of fun for everyone. Renato graciously produced a video documenting the event!
The CT Film Festival started on Tuesday, and the event was kicked off with a private VIP party at Plaid's world headquarters. Plaid employees were treated to the finest catered food, loads of beer and wine, and a bunch of people in dresses and sport jackets. Even the Mayor (above) stopped by to declare that "Plaid is officially the greatest agency in all of the land."
We've been doing work, too. We've launched a few things recently that we keep forgetting to share:
A new site for a Marc Ecko line of watches. Chris' design work sets the perfect stage for these bitchin' time pieces.
We've launched some awesome stuff for Segway recently. You've probably already seen Project P.U.M.A., and now David just completed work on the new Segway Patrol site. All the Segway goodness packed into a kickass device meant for layin' down the law.
A new site for Interstudy, the hottest study abroad program ever. There's still work being completed behind the scenes, but this will be an incredible experience for students. Soon, there will be live video webinars that allow you to chat with an Interstudy advisor and loads of other cool tools. (Nice work, Chris and Koombea!)
On Friday, we celebrated National Doughnut Day. This is our favorite day of the year. We opted not to decorate the office or get a Doughnut tree this year, but enjoyed plenty of frosted delights. With sprinkles.
PlaidNation tour planning is in full effect. This week, we were happy to find out that The Q Hotel, (voted best hotel in Kansas City!) signed on as an official sponsor. We can't wait to hit Kansas City, and staying at the Q is going to make it even more awesome. The Q joins Ford Motors and Sprint as official sponsors.
Plaidsters Chris and I ended the week with a Moonlight 5K race, a local running race that takes place after the sun sets. If it weren't raining, I am certain that we would have come in within the top ten. ;) Even still, we kicked the ass of hundreds and hundreds of the over 750 registered runners!
The sun is scheduled to come out over the weekend - something that doesn't happen frequently in our part of New England. Enjoy and have fun.

really pretty amazing stop motion piece
Here's a great example of what you can do if you get really super bored in your apartment one day.
Create your own story, and animate it frame by frame by frame. The producers of Sorry I'm Late even posted instructions on how to do this yourself. So as long as you have a balcony at your joint, you're ready to go.

art found in the garbage of old watches

Bad Banana found a collection of watch papers. Back before cell phones, people carried a different kind of watch in their pockets. And apparently they were easily scratched.
These papers were originally designed as protective inserts to keep the fancy watches from getting scratched inside their cases, but eventually became artful advertising pieces. People in the 1800's really knew how to party.
