star wars is here

There's something that's been the topic of every conversation in every workplace the last couple of days. Something that millions of people watched live on Tuesday night. Of course, we're talking about the holographic reporters on CNN.
If you didn't see them, imagine that Star Wars technology exists. And that Wolf Blitzer is Luke Skywalker. (And if that's true, then Larry King is definitely Darth Vader.)
Anyway, Wired has an excellent rundown on all of the amazing television political graphics witnessed during Election 2008, and the technology that makes them possible.

in a world of only black and white...
What if everything were just black and white, and you needed a paint gun to find your way? This is probably a question that you ask yourself everyday. Now you'll know the answer. From SwissMiss

spielberg: watch out.

Here's another Google product that maybe you didn't know about. Google SketchUp lets users create 3D graphics. With Google ease.
We haven't tested this tool yet, but we trust in the Google gods that anyone can now design buildings, create motion picture 3D effects and produce technical models for NASA. Sweet.

another place for you to wear spandex and elf ears

Google has just launched Lively, which looks to have some massive potential. Lively is a 3D application that allows users to create avatars, place them into virtual environments, and communicate with others in that environment. Yes - just like SecondLife.
But this is a Google product. And there are a few things that look enticing in comparison to Second Life or MMORPG's. With Lively, "rooms" have real-world urls - that can be embedded into web pages, blogs, etc. You can pull in photographs and YouTube videos. And you'll eventually be able to port in friends from other social media tools.
Adverlab and Mashable have excellent rundowns of what's possible, along with screen shots.
For now, Lively is a PC only application. :( But a Mac version is promised soon.

how to share your reel.

While researching interesting brands and people that we'd like to meet on the Plaid Summer Tour, coworker Sara found Laika. A super cool animation and production facility in Oregon.
Their work is stunning - but that's not the only thing you should check out. Their site allows you to view their reels - and put together your own reel of their work, in any order you'd like. And then share it with friends.
They've thought hard about their audience - agencies and people who hire animators - and understand that there are several people that are a part of that decision making process. By allowing the sharing of a custom reel, everyone in on the decision can see the same work. Awesome work. Awesome marketing. Totally, completely awesome.
AND - I discovered that they produced the new spots for Soy Joy - which rock, btw. See the spot in my custom Laika reel.

paper critters rock your laser printer.

Paper Critters is an awesome site where you can make your own critters. Out of paper. And print them. Or send them to your friends.
With this handy tool, your xmas shopping is all but done. Because you know all of your friends want paper toys. (I only bring that up because my mailbox is filled with xmas mailings.) Happy rocktober. Thanks Devon!

social networking for your second life avatar

OMG. If you didn't already have enough social networking sites to keep track of, now there's one for your avatar. For real. A social networking site devoted entirely to avatars. I don't know whether to be impressed, or just tired of the social network scene.

the factory on your desktop

Ponoko is a pretty cool new concept in web 2.0 meets manufacturing and marketplace.
You design something cool. Upload your design. Magic lasers cut your design into reality. You refine your design. Magic lasers cut more. And then you sell your goods. The marketplace meets the factory meets the designer. Nice idea.

now every pic can feel like real life

TechCrunch has a post up about FotoWoosh, a new service that can turn any 2D image into an animated 3D model. Very cool stuff. This image above is cooler-looking than all 90 minutes of Jaws 3-D and with about the same amount of effort!
