Junkart can be pretty awesome, especially when said junk is turned into something functional. As example, when artist Stephen Shaheen found Metrocards all over the ground in New York City, he decided to recruit a few people on Craigslist to help pick them up. In just one week they collected over 5,000, all of which he used to create a functional bench (reinforced with 1/8" steel).
The bench is meant to represent how mass transit brings together diverse lives (represented by each single Metrocard) into one place in time. Even more interesting though, is how each life / Metrocard was apparently deemed expendable even though each of them could have simply been recharged and reused rather than discarded. Kind of sad, kind of beautiful.
