Check out this fun initiative (brought to you by VW!) that answers the question "if we made the stairs more fun than the escalator, would people take them? Cool.

What would be more fun would be for the stairs to play a recognizable tune as you ascend on one side, and another tune as you descend on the other side.

Or a Lights Out staircase.
Basically, walking up and down changes the square of light you're standing on, plus the surrounding squares. If all the boxes are switched on or off, the stairs then generate a random puzzle.
