happy park(ing) day!

Today our agency will be participating in PARK(ing) Day, an annual, one-day, global event where artists, activists, and citizens collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spots into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public parks.

We'll be turning a parking space in front of our building into a Plaid park. We imagined the perfect park would be a place with comfy chairs and free wifi so that you could hang outside and tweet your friends. So that's the park that we're creating! (If you're in the area, stop by and say hi!)

It took a lot of investigation to figure out "the point" of this day. Even the main PARKing Day site doesn't really explain it in any detail. After watching the PARKing Day video, I understand it on a larger scale... Just curious about Plaid's role. Why did you want to participate and what was the message you wanted to get across? (There are a million parks and public spaces in Danbury, CT, so it must be some other cause?) Very cool idea overall and your space looked great.

Great question. For us, it was an opportunity to bring something cool to our community.

I think we succeeded. We met plenty of residents, business owners and pedestrians that we had never met before. At least four other businesses committed to joining the event next year - so now it will truly become a community event.

I think that's pretty cool for our city, as we live in one of those suburban areas where people tend to complain that "nothing cool goes on here" I hope that we've helped play a role in changing that perception.

Oh...AND, it was a ton of FUN. We're always looking for a good excuse to have more fun. :)

Cool. Thanks for sharing! I see now that the community interaction was what it was all about. And fun is a good thing. Secretly, so is the idea of pissing off people who can't find a parking space. :P
