Quite funny indeed. I do think they certainly needed a change in the 50s as the two were quite similar prior to that. However, no matter how many times they change it, the 70s/80s version will always be the look I associate Pepsi with.
Strategically it has always made sense that Pepsi continually change their logo. Their brand is centered around Now, not What Was. I think it makes sense against the larger brand strategy.

Actually he has updated it now with the changes Coke have made. Looks less clear now.
