nyc: play with our data and make cool tools

Mayor Bloomberg just announced a new initiative to entice web developers to utilize NYC data and build applications that "create the connectedness that will benefit the city economically, civically and socially" says Mr. Mayor.
It all starts next year (things don't move that fast in the big city) and the apps will launch using the new .NYC domain names.
Having access to awesome NYC data could be a boon for branded apps too!

Correction - The big apps project is not tied into the .nyc TLD. See the latest on Big Apps.
Request - The .nyc TLD (like .com and .org but just for New York City) has been a long time in coming and its ultimate arrival is still in doubt - 2011 is the best current bet. (It's been been holding steady arriving at "about 9 months from now" as per the ICANN.org, the entity that controls TLDs, for about 4 years.)
But the city recently got involved with the effort and we're afraid their brand management philosophy might not meet the task at hand, and focus too heavily on the defensive. (The city has 500 lawyers in the Corp. Counsels Office and is quite safe in certain respects.)
But imagining the city as a unity, with a multitude of options and operators, might not be within the scope of the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications, the entity in charge of .nyc's development.
We've created an independent entity (not-for-profit) with deep background in imagining networked services to guide its development. Find us at connectingnyc.org and be sure to click into our wiki and blog where 9 years of public engagement is reflected.
So here's the request - We're trying to convince the city that our governance model serves the city and .nyc best. (Learn about it here.) And we'd like some of the talented people from brandflakesville to provide some brand management help - creative ideas on how we might take up the most shelf space without damaging our brand (NYC is the greatest place in the world).
Participate through our advisory board or just ad hoc it.
