msnbc seeds the 'vine

This afternoon MSNBC announced it would acquire social news site Newsvine for an undisclosed sum.  Very smart move. With Newsvine, MSNBC will instantly inherit something its competitors Fox News Channel and CNN couldn't possibly build organically in a short time: A community of thousands of active social journalists from which to source their own stories and tap for their own expanded coverage of the day's news.  Traditional news organizations have utilized UGC and social media to great effect in recent months; this acquisition is indicative of the further consolidation of traditional and social journalism.
