horror films - the new chick flicks?

There was an excellent article in Sunday's NY Times about the changing demographics for horror and slasher films. Proof that before you plan your next branding campaign, you really need to know and understand your demographic.

Many people would assume that girls don't attend the gruesome films - but according to the article, many flicks in this genre are seeing more girls than boys.

Saw II drew more women under 25 than men. And roles are changing too. The article points out that The primary victim in "Saw" is a philandering husband. The main victims in "Hostel" are lecherous, beer-soaked frat boys.

Women in horror films are no longer limited to topless babysitter bait. In Hostel, the women play roles (although still topless) in control and evil, instead of victims.
